SICK AND TIRED OF THE DEBATE WHETHER ITS A MMORPG OR NOT

JohnnyVJohnnyV Member Posts: 124

I mean really people who cares.......is it a mmorpg or not...i dont know.....and who care. Anyone that actually sat down and played this game for more than a couple of hours would know that it is a joy to play.....not only was it stable...with very rare crashes for me. The graphics were crazy good ( i mean its an alpha for goodness sakes). The gameplay has a refreshing mix of old school leveling up and mixes in some tactical elements. Having a good party and good charisma with your teamates is more important than actually being the most powerful numerically( even though its mainly due to the 15th level cap) so i dont know how the actual game will turn out in that aspect. I just love the game and definitely the best demo ive ever played....anyone that fought the final team mission and slew Rotscale knows what im talkin about

PEACE

some people just have different feelings, I for one think it did feel like an MMORPG, it wasnt a big area that I had explored, to me, but it could hold a lot of people and that was MMORPG stands for 'Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game'.

But like most people it wasnt a tradiditonal MMORPG in a sense, but over all it did contain what needed to be classified as an MMORPG

  • JohnnyVJohnnyV Member Posts: 124

I guess this post backfired...cause it just turned into another debate whether this is a MMORPG or not....sigh....well i guess the arguing will never stop...just hope it doesnt take away from the fact that this was a fun DEMO..

MMORPG is a general genre of gaming. Emphasis on the word general. There are many other games than Guild Wars that don't specifically fall on the exact point of MMORPG (as in those people who think of an EQ-esque game). It is a wide variety. We have games that are more into FPS, RTS, you name it. However they are still MMORPGs. How?

Massive: The game is gigantic. Not just in size but in material. You can do this, and that, and that, and that, and that... Massive can also mean to have the capacity for a large number of players.

Multiplayer: It's players participating with other players, cooperatively and/or competitively.

Online: The game is played through the Internet.

Role-Playing Game: To roleplay is to take the persona of someone and/or something you are not. This includes in a virtual world with an artificial environmment.

Not everyone "roleplays" (the common term for acting in-character). But they are still roleplaying in a different context - they are taking the persona of someone and/or something they are not. In Guild Wars you take the persona of someone in a virtual world with an artificial environment.

While they do label themselves as a CORPG, they are still covered under the MMORPG umbrella.

I played the demo. I'd say that GW is still in the root of MMORPG. But the most important thing is that I had a lot of fun playing it. I think it's the cooperative mission that got me hooked.

I had lots and lots of fun playing this, and the MMORPG atmosphere was just fine.

I had fun talking and trading with people in towns, making friends.  It's not even laggy cuz of the districts!

The missions were AWESOME, challeging and you don't win all the time.  You really need teamwork and stategies.  The people who are saying this is like D2, IT's not, D2 is like lvl all day till ur 99, but in GW it's all about teamwork, stratgies and so much more.  I don't care if it's a truly MMO or not, but most important, it's fun.

This was just a demo, i can't wait for the full version.  FUN FUN FUN!

Well lets see.....GW seems to have a lot of Content.  Quality of MMORPGs.  GW has a lot of attention on it making it popular and a lot of people will try it.  Hm...guess thats where the Massive Multiplayer comes in.  Its a Game.  People can decide whether to roleplay or not....so it has the roleplay.  Hm..well I guess I see MMORPG in all.  So I would have to say to those of you who are too dense to notice.  This is a MMROPG

So why don't we all just call it a CORPG and then maybe most people can be happy?  I mean it is a fair bit different then most MMORPGs out there, but that doesn't prevent it from being a good game, it's just a bit different.

Alot of complaining has been goin on that this doesnt "feel" like an MMORPG....but hasnt alot of complaints from gamers been that all the MMORPGs that have been coming out kind of all feel the same...and now that we have something that is breaking some of the mold....people are trying to argue that it isnt a MMORPG at all.......just wait for the retail version to judge whether this is goin to be a MMORPG or not...cause the demo severely lacked all the features that the game is going to offer

  • AngelysAngelys Member Posts: 18

I really enjoyed my E3 test, but I still insist it is NOT a MMORPG.

It's all well and good to define each individual word from the acronym, but the Massively and Multiplayer are hyphenated and therefor imply that it should have a massive amount of people playing together.  This is not the case.  The only time this DOES happen is in a non-combat town area.  It's like calling your car a Mass Transit System because you've picked up a couple of your friends! :P

So does MMO Setup Area Game suit better?  Yes it does.  I still think the best definition of GW was as a Multiplayer Co-op Online RPG, making it MCORPG and therefor a unique genre :)

Let's go with MCORPG and stop the fighting!  I want Persistant Online World Peace!

I enjoyed GW. I thought it was fun to play and entertaining. Notice the bold words. That's what counts in a game. If you find a game that is fun to play, entertaining, gives you pleasure and satisfaction when you play well, and is recreation to you, then it is a game you like. Not every one likes the same thing, hence different opinions about games.

Those of you who don't think GW should be included to MMORPG.COM just because you have a problem, and in your opinion, that it is not a mmorpg. WTF ::::27::. It is just your opinion, but does it matter. If you trash a game, even though you might enjoy playing it, just because it doesn't meet your criteria for a certain genre, that doesn't seem very logical. If you don't like the game, just come out and say it, state the reasons why, but don't give a LMAO reason.

Webster defines a game as "Entertainment", "sport", "play", "recreation", "merrymaking". If you are more concerned with whether or not a game is being categorized under the correct genre instead of if it is a good game ::::12::, where are you priorities p? I play all different types of genres of games. I play mmorpgs, fps, platformers, classic games like spades and chess, and my criterias are that the game has to be fun and entertaining to me first. Good graphics and absence of bugs and lag second. Good support third. Cost fourth. I never take into consideration what the genre the game is listed as. It is just a label.

JohnnyV the poll was ok, but didn't have the selection I really wanted to check. Only played the game for a couple of hours, but I really enjoyed the game play and there were no bugs ::::02::.

Wolf has been making the point i tried to make in this post is that it was a great demo..... and everyone's opinions on whether this is a mmorpg or shouldnt be relevant cause it is here on www.mmorpg.com so obviously the web site designers made a choice so people need to live with it....sorry about the poll...any suggestions on a different answer ill add...but couldnt think of anything else to put

What people don't understand, is basically the the term MMORPG has a scientific technical definition.

Any game which meets that scienfitic technical definition can be classed correctly as an MMORPG.

Most people just "assume" they know what an MMORPG is without knowing what the correct definition is.

I see the same thing happen all the time in discussion forms. Terms get tossed around but most people don't know what it is they are talking about.

  • InfEagleInfEagle Member Posts: 10
Actually you're all wrong. According to the developers this game isn't a MMORPG, its a "Cooperative Roleplaying Game".

  • DjinDjin Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 3,263

It says right on their site...

    "This isn't a MMORPG"

    Isn't that proof enough? image

    ROFL

STOP MISSQUOTING THE FAQ on WWW.GUILDWARS.COM

And here you will find an interview with ANET that clarifies a bit.

    http://www.omega-circle.com/gw/compendium/scriptum.php?id=13

[GH] The FAQ has Guild Wars listed as a MMOG, not an MMORPG. Will MMORPGers draw unfair comparisons to the fantasy MMOGs out there?

ArenaNet Team: Actually, we think of Guild Wars as a competitive online role playing game, or CORPG. We're MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER, but we don't go around calling ourselves an MMORPG simply because that term evokes images in peoples' minds of games such as EverQuest, and we are very different from that game. Guild Wars is not about spending hundreds and hundreds of hours leveling your character, and it's not about spending hours running across a huge world to get to a dungeon, only to find it camped by dozens of other players. We have a unique and new gameplay style that provides all of the good parts that players enjoy in an MMORPG without a lot of the tedium that you so often find in those games.

    ----------

Then on GAMESDOMAIN.COM they clearly state it is an MMORPG in this article:

    http://gamesdomain.yahoo.com/preview/22045

    -----------

www.mmorpg.com considers Guild Wars an MMORPG

    -----------

www.stratics.com considers Guild Wars to be an MMORPG

    -------

Basically the deal is as follows.

Arenanet know that there are some people who think that the ONLY MMORPGS are games like EVERQUEST and AC and UO etc

So they chose to LABEL Guild Wars CORPG because some of you babies would get confused (which is exactly what this discussion is all about).

However, CORP is just a label they've put for those who aren't technically minded people and as a subclass of MMOGs.

So let's settle this dispute by doing the following using ANET'S own labels for those confused individuals.

MMORPG is a subclass of MMOG
CORPG is a subclass of MMOG

MMORPG similar but not equal to CORPG

    But both are MMOG

Will everyone agree that GW is a MMOG at least?

Since this thread has been created 7 months ago, people are still debating whether GW is MMORPG or not.

for the people who think this isnt an MMORPG lets narrow down the words

    M-massive

    M- multi player

O- online          this means alot of people can play at once to help one another and interact with an enviorment with friends

    R-role

    P-playing

G-game   this meens you can play a role as a character... in this game its necromancer and magician and other stuff... you play as your character and follow your story line...

does that sound like an MMORPG to you? it does for me
