Mega-Societies a problem?

I've been reading up on this game alot recently and its occured to me that like EVE Online has, wont there be huge-huge-guilds that will control much of the game, maybe too much of the game?

Do you think it will happen? would it cause any problems? i'm not sure........ is there limits for the amount of members per society? Being in the uber-guilds wouldnt be bad, but struggling in weak guilds or being guildless might suck.

The problem wouldn't arise for maybe a year or 2 after release. If guilds had a Cap at say 100 members, it might curb the potential problem from arising or at least dumb it down abit.

The devs are making this game to be pretty realisic and player based, so it is enevitable to see clans, or maybe even secret societies grow and have a lot of control.  There will always, where ever you go groups just like that.

Ergo, I am going to join the stonecutters guild.

Anyhow, not nessesarily a bad thing either, I can't forsee it getting out of hand.

    Cheers.

I don't see any issues with large societies. Could you expand a little on your fears?

There's always going to be a couple of uber guilds that everyone knows and that are going to be "the guilds" followed by ones that are large, but don't get the "press" the uber guilds do, and then a bunch of smaller ones that are a bunch of friends or co-workers that got together and made a guild.

If you're worried about them controlling, say...the economy, it would be counter-productive for them since they would be hurting their nation.

There is a difference between realm-based games such as DAoC or PotBS and open-for-all-sides like EVE for example.

While in EVE the "top 1000" of the whole eveworld may make one guild (corporation) and rule over most others, the big guilds in PotBS shouldbe caught in one of their realms (France, England, Spain, Pirate).
So if there is a huge guild on english side, it nonetheless has to survive against 3 other realms...

    sorry my english

It doesn't really matter if there is a big guild on one side as the guilds aren't the ones who own the ports it's the side, of course if the other sides have no or only small guilds it could take over big parts of the ocean. But the issue of sever balance is being talked about on the fourms, I'm sure that there will be a system in place to make sure player numbers are fair on each side , so guilds don't really have that much affect and there isn't really an uber sized guilds right now.

though... this leads to another problem:

    realm-balance.

the moderatest polls say 60% Pirates+England. Some other 70+%
I for myself think, it will be even higher.

It will be interesting to see how this develops and if some fears are jusified or not. One interetsing concept they are using is a reset. Whilst nations can take control of ports, when a certain target is reached then all ports are reset. In theory it sounds like a good way to work it. Of course it maybe some uber guilds then starts to take over ports quickly (port farming!) but I can only see that becoming a problem if one nation has a lot more players than the other 3 nations combined. There is certainly scope for problems to arise but that is because they are making something new. I think it will be very interesting to see how it develops once it's released and I for one will be there.

I was thinking that myself about a week ago, it would be like Eve. Maybe they should put a CAP on the size of Guild or whatever they are calling it. Maybe 25 people. There is a lot of Dis and PRO to that thinking, but it may have more pro's, because in this type of game it would be quite easy to have one faction taking over everything. Then we would be having world reset all the time. If you make the guilds smaller maybe what you might start seeing is guilds work more than ever together to achieve goals and work out the logistic more. 25 is a rough number but whatever the number, it should equal the ability to take over a port. Obviously you would get collusion with Guilds but it might slow down the world resets.

There is so many ways this can go, but I really don’t want World Resets all the time, it would really kill it for me. Only time will tell. But one thing is for sure I would like to see that damn game out right F-N now.

    Just my opinion

well they do have a cap on fleet fights, at 25 i think it is.  So since blob warfare won't be much of an issue I don't think this game will have the same issues as eve.

4 factions combined with a leveling system is going to be the suck.  There's going to be like 40 other people I can pick from to group with.

i dont think so... i belive there will be a natural balance of players as the game gets mature... or maybe not, but at least pirates and bitish will be fighting as equals,  and that alone is enough..

I dont see any problems. EvE has only 1 server. meaning HUGE guilds/alliances can happen.

PotBS will have multiple servers and will have oposing factions.

We dont know how they will balance it out yet but Im sure they had plenty of time to make it as good as possible

Eventually they will let people to move their chars from one server to another also.

Im not even worried... cant wait for beta
