As far as games goes Blizzard is king. They haven't released a bad game yet. I haven't particularly liked many of their games thus far because of the style, but even with me not liking the genre I have enjoyed their games. That said it would be nearly impossible for me to believe that they could create a flawed MMOG.
That's all the hype, and from what I've seen so far it's not hype, it's just the way it is.
Just because every car has similar features doesn't mean that Ferraris are copies of Model Ts. Progress requires failure and refining.
Originally posted by Coldmeat As for EQ2, it will tank, and tank hard, if it even makes it out the door. It's nothing more than EQ with hideous mannequins in place of the current models. Oh, but the NPCs talk! Yeah, that'll be cool, for 3.2 seconds, til you turn off all the sound in a desperate attempt to achieve 1 frame per second. -------- Odi profanum vulgus et arceo
Not to say that this is wrong, but "if it even makes it out the door" ? This game has already got hundreds of pre-orders and collectors editions bought, and the game hasn't even hit shelves yet. There's a multi-million dollar campaign just for advertising the game. Trust me, i'm sure the game will make it out the door.
As for nothing new? HAHAHA. This will take a WHOLE new spin from the original EQ. Anyone who took more than 15 minutes to read up on the game would know that. And you get way more than one frame per second. It was run on a low end machine and played fine. Your just being too negative.

If you buy a 512Mb and a 256Mb stick of RAM, it won't let you enable DualDDR support. You will need to matching sticks of RAM. I have two 512Mb Corsair XMS Extreme DDR400 RAM and it's running at 6.4Gb [speed] rather then 3.2Gb. If you had 768Mb, you'd be still only using 3.2Gb.
If you can afford it, I wouldn't get the 9800XT, I would go with a Nvidia 6800 or an ATI x800. You will see a night and day difference. Even my 5950U is a very nice card... and if I upgraded to a 6800 I would see a double in speed at high res.
The HDD is a very nice one. I perfer Maxtor, some people like Seagate, others like WD. They are all good HDD. I currently own a 60Gb HDD which is ATA/133 and has 8Mb cache... it's very nice and very fast. I wish I had SATA RAID 0. Or even some Raptors... Mmmm... 10,000 RPM.
Your CPU is nice, but I would buy a 2500+ for $91 and overclock it to a 3200+ and save yourself a few $100 dollars. Worried about the heat? Buy yourself a $10 Tornado 92mm CPU fan and some Arctic Silver 5, then you won't have to worry... just noise. 56dBa of noise...
You still have to find a motherboard... I would suggest getting a nForce 2 SPP motherboard... Giga-Byte, ASUS and Abit make really good motherboards. Sound card too... If you can dump $100, get yourself what I have... it's the best on the market and it supports EAX Advance 4, THX, 7.1 speakers and tons more!
I have just finished playing the WoW Beta Stress test. Here are my thoughts on the game.
I will be perfectly honest.
Wait let me give you some background on me, I am a 5Yr EQLive Veteran. I played almost from release up until a few months ago.
Ok, I went into WoW expecting it to be horrible, because I'm a huge EQ fan. I was greatly surprized. It had great graphics, outstanding combat and the best quest system I've ever seen. Because I knew the stress test was only going to last around a week, I tried out several characters. I have a 22 Tauren Shaman, 18 Orc Rogue, 10 Night Elf Priest and a 8 Orc Warlock. The scenery in both the Horde and Alliance Realms are out of this world, when you look around, it is very much immersive. The details of the animals, all the way down to the packs of wild deer that run by were sensational. The combat system was nice, each class has several different actions they can do during a normal combat, unlike eq where you just auto attack. Now.. the quest system... When you enter a town, you see all the NPC's. When you see an NPC with a Yellow " ! " over their head it indicates they have a Quest for you. You will also see a while " ! ", which means they have a quest, but you are not of high enough level to get it. So you speak with the NPC and accept the quest. The Yellow ! turns to a white " ? " meaning you have an open quest with him. When you finish the quest and come back into town the NPC will have a Yellow " ? " meaning you need to talk to them to complete the quest. All of this makes it much easier to find and do quests. In the week that I played I did non stop questing to level my characters. There was no Exp Grind. So that basically gives you a brief view of WoW.
Here are the things I think will cause it to have a short life for players..
1) There are no Level Restrictions on grouping. You can group a lvl 1 with a lvl 20 to power level.
2) Levels come to easy. There were some level 40+ in the week that the stress test lasted, and the level cap is only 55.
3) At the moment there is no raiding. I understand they are going to put it in, but its not there atm.
4) All the mobs you fight are just higher versions of the same ones you fought since the beginning.
5) Most dungeons are just cookie cutter cutouts, meaning they are all pretty much alike.
6) Dungeon crawls are small and uneventful, no excitement.
and the biggest drawback i found...
There is no penalty for dying..... You just have to run to your Corpse... you lose Zero Exp.. I died 4-5 times on one encounter, no big deal.. took me 45seconds to get from the Graveyard to my body.
These are just my opinions, however... Ive talked to alot of other people who saw the same thing I did.
Just because I'm a gamer doesn't mean I drive a Honda.
You would tend to have reservations on the management and support of the game if you ever played Blizzard games on-line. While I would agree their games are great, easy to play and loads of fun, their support history with Diablo, Diablo 2 and Diablo LOD and the other Srarcraft and Warcraft games on Battlenet leaves a lot to be desired. They treat all players as cheats, liars and scammers and manage the Diablo games in a manner that shows no direction or purpose. WOW MIGHT be a great game, MIGHT be trend-setting but until Blizzard can show improvement in the support aspect, demonstrate care for their users and some creativity in the direction of their games, I wouldn't reccommend their games to anyone online. Beta test participation won't prove they have learned how to interact with their customers.
Blizzard's support is still leaps and bounds greater than S.O.E. I've Had the Displeasure of dealing and seeing first hand both. Blizzard looks like gods next to SOE
With a vague release date of Nov 15th, I'd say Open Beta would probably start Nov 1st. Usually a couple days before the actual game goes Gold, that way any show-stopping bugs that rear their heads under mass scrutiny can be fixed before the Master is pressed.
Not sure if anyone knows who Thott is, but he was a Guild leader in EQ who went to work for blizzard. One of my RL friends was in his EQ guild and they still maintain a website for the members. I was told that Thott posted that Blizzard was attempting to release a month early. The marketing deptarment wants to have the game on the shelves a full month before EQ2. They are assuming that, first game out will get the lions share of the business. If this is in fact the case, then you should see open beta start sometime in the next 2 weeks.
Just because I'm a gamer doesn't mean I drive a Honda.
I've read that they are both being released the same date.
This is the next biggest face off since UO/EQ days and ATI/Nvidia wars...
This is going to be huge... also doesn't matter who's out first, there's;

So I think people will buy EQ2 and WoW...
And 6,394,274,506 total people in the whole world.... that's a lot of people.
You are correct. Currenty they are both EverQuest II and World of Warcraft slated to be released on November 15. However, Thott has stated that WoW should be out by October 15. I hope he is right. I will purchase WoW just to play til EQ2 releases.
Just because I'm a gamer doesn't mean I drive a Honda.
Nah. Its just something to play. $49 isnt bad for a game. Plus, if something happens and for some weird reason, I dont like EQ2 I will already have characters in WoW.
Just because I'm a gamer doesn't mean I drive a Honda.
I pre-ordered EQII a while ago. Since then, I have played in the Stress Test for WoW and also played in the EQII Beta.
I have changed my pre-order to WoW based on playing both.
There is no comparison between the two. Hate to say it but I really hated playing EQII. The UI really sucked major and the mobs your fight where really lame. The whole UI was bad...hope they really look at it and start over! The graphics were nice but not the best i have seen. That is only good comment I can make about EQII.
I really enjoyed playing WoW and can't wait for the release. Talk about a smotth game! I hope Blizzard has plans about the level cap and the rate of leveing. That would be my only warning sign.
