hello all...i just started playing gw and i have a question. in the orginal game you can hire npcs to come along with you to help quest and fight mobs ,etc.. but, i was reading about one of the expansions that said it allows you to upgrade those npcs with gear etc my question is if i buy the xpansion will i be able to upgrade those npcs that i'm using in the starter area of the orginal game or are these upgraded npcs only used in the expansion parts of the game?

Only in the expansion for Nightfall. You can get them there and carry them around using a character from nightfall back to the old campaign but you cannot upgrade the ones from the original or first expansion.

    Welcome to the game...

In order to get heros as metioned above me, you must purchase Nightfall.  Keep in mind that Nightfall is not an expansion, but another stand alone game which you can link with Guild Wars: Prophecies.  You get heros very early on in NF and you can take them over to Prophecies but you will not be able to take them into the starter area (Pre-Sear).  You can use them all over the rest of the games though and are great to have.  You can upgrade your hero though the different campaigns by adding weapons/inscriptions and runes/insignias found, however as far as I know you can only get new armor in the Nightfall Campaign.

    Good Luck, Have Fun.

Also note that you may use a character from prophecies to acquire heroes, granted, you would need to get to a place called Lion's Arch and complete a quest that will gain you access to nightfall. When you get to Elona, you can acquire a group of heroes. Another good thing to consider is that once you merge nightfall and prophecies together, the necromancer hero, Olias is available to you via a quest as usual. :)

P.S. Olias can be obtained with a quest in Lion's Arch, i recommend taking some strong friends with you that are built to handle elementalists!

Yeah if I had a penny for everyone I have helped run to get Olias I would have, well....5 pennies, but still...you know what I mean.
