Seeking a new game... asking for help finding the right one!

Hi everyone!

This is my first post at MMORPG, and I come begging for help.

I have dug through the killer Game List here on site, and tried 6 free to play games, and bought 2 new pay games in the last 2 weeks... and still have found nothing to suit me properly. So, a little about me so you know where I am coming from:

I am 32, and have been playing RPGs since Dragon Warrior for the 8-bit NES. I fell in love with EverQuest 1, spent 8 long years of my life with it.... then went to World of Warcraft... okay, yes WoW lasted me all of from Feb 2007 to June 2007... it is nowhere near the game EQ has been... After level 70 and full sets of Arena and KZ gear, there just... is nothing left in the game... I left WoW from frusteration at the tiny amount of content, and the mentality of both Blizz and the players. Any game where you have a company nefing every class except warlocks, it gets frusterating. (Chaining Fear is an almost "I WIN" button, but they nerf everthing else to some degree.... are the devs sleeping with hot little girls that play Locks or something???) Even worse, when you have players on an RP server that think shouting or spamming a channel with "Meet in the park for RP!!!", and stripping naked in the park for cyber is good RP... well let us say that the "RP" in World of Warcraft is worse than Blizzard's attempts at class-balance.

Along the way I also picked up Guild Wars... even with the expansion the game is more of a "take a break from your main game" kinda thing for me... I used to raid 40+ hours a week in EverQuest while working 44 hour workweeks. GW is a good game, but I cannot play it as my primary. Second Life ... yeah that is so not my thing at all. And the game There is engaging, but... I am old fashioned, I like to kill things... call me weird.

Okay now you know where I have come from...

Ideally I would LOVE a game that featured solid class builds, allowing classes to overlap slightly, but still be unique. Example: In EverQuest a Pally COULD spot heal, but did not go looking to heal groups.

Another HUGE HUGE issue is control configuration. I have used my arrow keys to move and my numberpad for spellcasting for 8 and a half years now. No matter how gorgeous 9Dragons looks to me, and no matter how interesting LastChaos seems (to me at least) I absolutely CANNOT STAND the whole "click to move" nonsense. Rappelz looked really good to me too... but that clicking... Lineage 2 lasted for all of 2 days with me because of that mechanic. That very tired, crappy, worthless mechanic. Diablo 1 was cool with it, but not a 3D game... 3/4 overhead games can get away with more simplicity because they are simpler...

Graphically, I am more Dreamcast lover than X-Box guy. If the graphics are gorgeous, I can appreciate them, but I do not REQUIRE top of the line graphics to enjoy a game. I think there are too many companies catering to the  "graphics whore" crowd as it is... neglecting gameplay, story, and design to focus on the graphics. Seriously, I have considered going back to EverQuest 1... so yeah, graphics are not that important to me.

I would LOVE to have a new game that offered deep RP. You know, people walk and speak in character pretty much all the time, and it is assumed if you speak you are in character? Not that you call in a channel for people to get together someplace FOR RP... the Roleplaying should be consistant.

Although, after a week of looking at 9Dragons, LastChaos and Rappelz but being unable to deal with the control mechanic... I would settle for a solid game that had configurable controls, and NO RP element at all.

As far as pay system... I have been looking hard at the free to play games out of desperation. Having bought 2 and not wanted either after getting a bit into it, free felt safer. But if it is a game that can compete with EQ1 in my heart, I would pay happily, and regularly.

So basically I seek a well balanced MMORPG with configurable controls (MAIN THING! Yes that is sad), a solid backstory, and a good RP environment.

Any and all help you guys could offer would be amazing!

Thanks In Advance!

-Bane

Clan Lord [1998?] (and its international clone, Arindal): great for RP, not great eye candy, little to no PvP

Realm Online [1996]: also, great for RP, hand drawn gfx, i do believe

ummm...Ultima Online, maybe? maybe go back to EQ? and yeah, GW has the crappiest group of RPers out there, mainly because it attracted all the little kids wanting to play a decent MMO but couldn't afford paying monthly

the original Lineage (L1) isn't too bad...but i'm not so sure about RP...hardly anyone talks

Well i feel your pain and i relate almost exactly with you.  But there won't be anything great until the next generations are released later this year.  I kno thats not what you want to hear so if i had to give u advice i'd say go to fileplanet and get started on Sword of the New World. I know what your thinking... point and click.  But this game is amazing and WASD movement would ruin it because of MCC (multi-character-control) This game is very innovative with many new ideas and many classes.  I strongly suggest you try it out

Pulling down Sword of the New World now.

Ummm....im going out of a limb here but why dont you give DaoC a shot?. Its population isnt huge anymore but people still play it. I believe the classic servers are the most populated. Not sure about RP since i have never seeked that aspect of any game but its worth a shot IMO.

On the unorthodox side EvE has some good RP from ive personally seen, but its not everyones cup of tea. Ofc theres a trial to that so who not go and check it out?

Within the unorthodox side Auto Assault is a good game too and also offers a free trial so you can check that out if youd like.

Last but not least CoX. You can get a buddy key from some of the players here and imo its one of the most fun games ive ever played. There are some clans that RP as far as i know, so why not look into that as well.

I would suggest some others but by now their either dying or have been changed into irrecognizable pieces of junk.

    I hope that helps.

I actually forgot DAoC on my list. I grabbed that one and Sims Online the same week, when Sims Online was in Beta. DAoC was great for 8 or so months, me and a RL buddy played it together. But the PvP was the only thing that really held my interest (that aspect was AWESOME)... with the reduced player loads the PvP is not what it once was. But yeah, back in the day, I thought that was gonna be the EQ killer. It just ran shallow on overall depth.

I will grab Auto Assault later tonight or tomorrow and check into CoX

And to everyone tossing ideas, THANKS!

I was at my wit's end here.

It is very good to have found a community that can work with me for a change!

Haha, I laughed my ass of when you totally told that douchebag off!

Yeah I was stuck on "the end of MMOs" stage, then i started playing tales of pirates :P

It's fun atm, hoping it would be faster pace later, but I still need to give it a solid chance. FFXI is slow in the beg. imo, but the community is VERY VERY friendly. When I rejoined, and my account (characters) were gone, i had to start from scratch, now i'm back toi my old self in FFXI, and it took x5 the time to get there! Hope ya enjoy your new games!

I haven't had a good RP time since the MUDing golden days...  I hope you can find what you are looking for, if you do I'm sure I'll have to check it out.

I can give you an LOTRO buddy key if you like to try !!!

I didnt like it personally , but maybe it s just because i need a brake from that type of mmo.

Hahaha ya there are 12 year olds on the threads you have to eventually put up with.  Anyways i strongly suggest you look into Sword of the New World it has everything you seem to be looking at (i talked more about it in my previous post here) and the point and click works best with the multi-character-control system
i'm sorry but, i take that as an insult (seeing as i'm 14...well, maybe i shouldn't those 2 years are 2 years you really mature...for about half of us at least) anyways, yeah, i'm downloading SotNW as well...it looks amazing, and i wanna try out the squad-based idea

When we call people 12 year olds, we are assaulting their mental capacity and their ability to think for themselves. From the posts I have seen you do NOT fall into that category.

There are 40 year old guys I call 12 year olds daily. It is all about the mental.

Yes please forgive me for this post, i did not mean 12 year olds as in the physical age of some people i meant it as in the maturity level of the majority of 12 year olds, not all though. I for one know many that are quite mature please forgive my ignorance

Vanguard is supposed to be extremely EQ-esque.  I'm thinking of going out and buying it....

Well if this was 4 years ago i'd recomend SWG.  You sound like your more in to Fantasy tho.  But I've played swg off and on for 4 years, just got my 1440 day vet reward.

In some cases the game went from a mature crowd to a bunch of whiny immature pvp'ers, but their are hardcore rp'ers and mature people playing, you just have to find them.

ok its 2007 and nobody really plays swg anymore, its been through so much over the years.

Give it a shot anyway, Imperial RP'ers are usually the best i've seen in mmo's and I've played em all.

I think the game is moving in the right direction now, but is lacking serious content to keep you moving day and night, its also hard to find groups these days with nobody logging in.... hopefully that will pick up.  You sound like the type of gamer SWG needs.

    Cheers

after finally playing SotNW for the past hour, i really recommend it...especially if you're a junkie of the non-online Final Fantasy games, played FFXII, loved it and absolutely can't wait for either of the FFXIIIs...otherwise, it's still awesome but game play really reminds me of a spanish themed, online FFXII

HUGE thanks to all who have posted.

If i find what I am looking for here, I will be screaming and raving about how much I love it!

    Update and closing.

I do not think I like SotNW much at all... the controls... yeah not my thing.

    FFXI so far seems good.

This is likely my last post on MMORPG. It seems I pissed off and/or hurt the feelings of some little WoW fanboy that attacked me. I pushed back when he did, and then he reported me. I cannot deal with a site that will let me get attacked then have admin jump on me afterwards... so I told admin to screw itself and to PLEASE ban me.

I thank you all for your help, and hopefully one of these MANY games I am playing now will suit me.

I wish you all the best!

    -Bane
