Darkfall Beta Timeline/History

ok heres the story about Darkfalls development and its beta announcements. i find it to be an interesting timeline regarding the developers abilities to launch beta's. Develops say theres gonna be a beta in Summer '07, could it be 3rd time lucky? we'll have to see.



2001 August - Darkfall's development is announced.



2002 October - Developers move to Greece for financial reasons.

2002 December -  Closed beta sign-ups begin.



2003 June -  Beta sign-ups are retracted, no public beta  happens.



2004 July - Developers claim game is in 'internal beta'.



2005 September - Beta sign-ups announced.

2005 October - Beta is Canceled.



2006 February - Developers release a gampley video.

2006 July - Darkfall did not have a playable version at E3, talk of an upcoming beta.

2006 August - Developers say they don't have a publisher and are considering self-publishing.



2007 January - Aventurine announced that a fully functional and stable beta build is running.

2007 January -  a video with one minute of ingame footage, showing melee combat, mounts, spellcasting and naval combat.

2007 May - Developers are planing for Beta in Summer '07.

2007 June - Developers say that they are still working on server problems and the GUI.



edit: they mentioned an upcoming beta during E3 2006 interviews, worth a mention.

Yet there are no preview or write ups about this E3 build from anyone who actually played(that weren't actually linked to it's publishing or development) it anywhere that I can find?



All along this games 'development' process the minimum amount of information possible has been released(most companies do the opposite to try and build hype and free advertising for their games) and none of that actually proves there is a real game behind the title that is any closer to seeing the light of day than it was back when it was first announced.



In short, other than a few demo's and screenshot which anyone with the right software can knock up, we've seen nothing of this game.



Until evidence comes out to the contrary, Darkfall is nothing more than vapourware

By 'Playable' i meant actually allowing anyone try the game out. I've been reading many interviews and all i hear about it them talking about the game and showing parts of the game to people, they spend 90% of the time talking about the game's concepts and features.



If you can find a credible quote that says somebody actually played the game at E3 2006 ill edit my thread and apoligize. I'm a fair person.



I did some research this list is'nt off the top of my head.

anyways....what i'm trying to point out is.........almost every year from 2002-2007 they've talked about a beta.



2 failed attempts to launch a beta, no publisher, 6 years of development with more to go.



Those are the facts, I just wonder why people are so defensive of this game, in mine and many others OPINIONs this game probably wont be released, does that make us DF haters?. no we're DF realists. I love the concept of the game, but i'm just looking at the facts and its not looking good.

Byron Mudry & John Hammond, two guys from TenTonHammer.com saw the game in action at E3. To bad that these guys seemed to be very anti PvP

I couldn't believe people fell for what Brad promised with Vanguard, but the people who still buy in to the DF myth are even beyond the VG fanboys.

Those of us who "buy" into this DF myth are much worse than VG fanboys. We must be idiots for hoping that Darkfall will be released, damn those aventurine guys sure scammed us. Wait, I must have what you said backwards or something. Surely you can't be saying that spending 0 dollars while waiting for a hypothetical release is worse than spending 50 dollars for the VG box and paying monthly only to be disappointed. Maybe you should check your definition of "beyond" as well as "buy into". Buying into assumes we spend time, money, etc, while it is clearly not the case. I'm sorry you feel you were scammed when you bought vanguard but if your going to try to make yourself feel better by making fun of others supposed stupidity at least think it through first.

You dont need to say anything to be a DF hater, just post anything in the forum that isnt "The game will ROXXOR, AND PAWN ALL THE NOOBIE WOW CLONES AROUND" and you get the "DF hater" badge it seems.

Given what has happened to Vanguard, if you were a small games company developing something aiming for the stars would you have a public beta before the game was basically completely finished? 



That said, it is a pretty dream harking back to the original UO days in many respects, but I'm not holding my breath on this one.

Why not UO did it's release was basically a public beta test you had to pay to play with that said though if the game itself is still fun people with play it anyways despite all the bugs and exploits that was all just part of the fun and if you didn't abuse bugs/exploit in UO back when it came out up until around when UOE no longer functioned then you got owned like a drunken school girl on prom night. Anyone that played UO before last target/last object arm/disarm were standard features knows what a broken horse the game was without them by comparison. Anyways point being is if Darkfall is real there is no reason not to carry on with at least a closed beta test of the game even if just a few people are allowed in like 50 to 250.

Didnt Razorwax move to Greece during the most part of 2003? Then Aventurine was formed in new buildings and with more new people.

 

And i think the devs want DF to be released as soon as possible. They have worked harde on this for years.  So its not strange they want beta to happen every year

I'm no DF mark, i actually will be surprised if it is ever released, but Mythic was a small company with big dreams and DAOC did a pretty good job at changing the face of pvp during its current time in the MMORPG world.

I don't think in an MMO a delay of beta is considered a valid point of whether the game will come out or not.

Darkfall seems at the very least to be a very good try on something other than the usual PvP we get, so as far as most people are concerned a good release is better than a rushed one. Plus I doubt it would overly be affected even if I comes the same time with WAR and AoC since both of those titles there is only speculation of what their gameplay is like. So we are talking about even ground at the very least.

op is pretty true about his timeline, he just forgot the beta date of 2006, that they said was their internal beta date in the combine interview.

I still believe in df though, I have to, because there is no other options. No other mmorpgs coming out that is trying to do anything like this

Btw can anyone explain this star system you have here on mmorpg.com - i used to have 4 stars when i had 60 or so posts...

So like the more you post the less stars you get? Not that I care much just wondering.
