     Couldn't agree more.

Terribly disappointed that MMORPG.COM even posts @#$% like AJ Glassners article, sorry but its just useless overdone tripe IMHO

Just for the record, Age of Conan is based off of the Howard Conan literature, not the film as far as I know. The literature is having a record resurgence of popularity these days. However, I wonder how much crossover there will be between fans of Conan in fiction and MMO fans who like Conan tales.....if AoC feels like a WoW clone then I know I will probably dislike it (just like I had trouble enjoying LOTRO because it lacks the true feel and style of the books, and embraces WoW style play).

    Current MMOs: Rift, GW2, Defiance

WoW was created, by design, to be the McDonalds of MMO's.  No snooty waiters, no reservations, just come in, get food you like, and come again tomorrow.  Vanguard started before WoW came out and their press was all about "this is the next generation of MMO, we're going to top the market!"  Then WoW hit while they were in development and beat them to death.  Suddenly, they changed their tune and started saying "We're not going to be like WoW, we don't need 8 million customers to be successful, we're looking for discriminating customers!"

This guy said it the best IMO.

WoW is currently the best product out there. Whether or not you believe that doesn't matter. Why? Because 8 million subs say otherwise, and in a free market economy  the product that makes the most money is usually considered the best. WoW is no different in this case.

WoW brought the best of every MMO out there and put it all into a game that was still appealing to the masses of casual and hardcore gamers out there. Something no other MMO has done since. Before WoW, MMORPG's was still very much a niche market. WoW brought MMO's to the spotlight. WoW is the reason why games like LoTR, AoC, and WAR are even being made. Everyone is trying to cash in on the MMO market now that WoW made it so popular.

The fact that games like WAR and LoTR have a been around for so long means nothing really. It's all about which GAME came out FIRST.  EQ obviously set the stage for an MMO explosion, but WoW headlined with a better game. LoTR might be different enough form WoW for current lovers of the game to hate the comparison, but the truth is that it's ENOUGH like WoW that the incentive to drop your lvl 70 toon on WoW, to just start over again on similar game isn't there for most gamers.

The game that takes WoW's place is gonna have to bring something to the game that LoTR, and I fear, WAR, and AoC just don't have. And that's a game that appeals to the MOST people. Not just the niche group of gamers.

And forget EVE. I have no interest in paying for a game that I won't be able to have fun in for at least six months after I subscribe. And even then I'd better have friends in the right places. If you got in on EVE at the ground floor, it would have been worthwhile, but for the rest of the world who only knew about it because SWG went in the crapper it's an uphill climb with no end in sight.
    1. we wow haters do not want to be "rebels" we simply hate wow. also we "rebels"  are mostly hardcore gamers who hate the new wave of soft mmorpgs with retarded battlefields and horrible xp systems where it takes like 2 weeks to get to cap. i also hate the fact that mounts take away the size of the land i could go on but i would need alot more space

    Plays:
    Urbandead
    Outbreak
    Runescape
    WoW
    Jail Riot
    Unification Wars

First off Wow is a clone of EQ.  It is made by ex-Eqers who wanted a better game.  So much for anything being a Wow clone.  There is no such thing as a Wow clone, they all derive from EQ in some manner.

You have to love clueless posters that write this trash: "but Pirates just might be labeled as "WoW in a Boat.".  Really now, shows a complete lack of knowledge of the game.  Just for you edification, Pirates of the burning sea is far more Eve like, it has few if any resemblences to Wow.
