I really don't care that much, I just don't like what I consider rediculous things, such as, magic, lasers, teleporters, psionics, unplausible monsters( werewolves and vampires are ok if they have toned down abilities) and races like elves, orcs or aliens.  General things that I consider unappealing and too unattached from reality to be interesting.

Whatever genre a game is I think it should be more gritty, it can have touches of the fantastical, but they should be subtle.

But I would mostly likely pick Art Deco Steam Punk as my favorite.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

Ever played the Shadowrun RPG?  With a good GM, it is gritty and includes magic and fantasy races (elves, orcs, dwarves, and trolls for PCs).

I would love to see a Shadowrun MMO.  My second wish would be a Fallout MMO.

I want to see a well done sci fi mmo RPG ... like a star trek mmo ... done right... we'll have to see if STO even comes close to the point of the shows.

other than that, sword and sorcery is nice like Conan... or a Diablo theme

As a sucker for horror and the lovecraftian, how could i vote otherwise

• AnimaAionAnimaAion Member UncommonPosts: 33

Well, tbh for me it depends how the game is structured based on the genre. I never really decide if i play a game only basing myself on its genre. For example I like EVE alot, its Sci-Fi, but I also like L2, which is Fantasy, and Im looking forward to play Aion Online, High Fantasy..

So I really cant chose a specific genre, I would have to chose game/genre, and not only genre.

• ZorvanZorvan Member CommonPosts: 8,912

First off, i voted Sci-fi ( Anarchy Online FTW!!).

However, I am also interested greatly in post-apocalyptic ( Icarus Studios "Fallen Earth" ) and horror ( Whitewolfs' to-be-determined mmorpg ). Post-apocalyptic definitely falls under sci-fi and horror can as well depending on the setting ( Funcoms' "The Secret World ).

So, sci-fi it is.

What's your favourite MMOG genre?

Some might not have any existing MMOGs yet, but I've included some sources/IPs for reference. Unfortunately polls are limited to 10 options. I hope I picked the most important genres.

My fave is high fantasy, but the main problem: Not a single mainstream MMO (read EQ clones, WoW clones)  goes into that catagory. When I think High-Fantasy, I think humans, centaurs, pixies, etc all joining up against evil, or dragons, driders, naga teaming up to rule the world. Name a mainstream MMO that has centaurs, pixies, dragons, driders, naga, or even something with more arms/legs, or less, as player characters.

"Of all the things wrong with today's RPGs, 2D characters on a 3D background is the worst."

I like high fantasy the best because it allows for the most original and unique games of them all. Too bad Korean companies keep on flooding the market with unoriginal fantasy clones.

The notion that graphics, or anything else for that matter, are anywhere near as important as gameplay/fun is so utterly ridiculous that anyone who shares such a view should be placed in an asylum.

sword and sorcery and high fantasy comes in close 2nd.  love em both but sword and sorcery is a little more fun for me

MMO wish list:

-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

I'm sticking to my CoX, i dabble in the other mmo's, but i always have a CoX subscription to fall back to :)

But the day i get a Sci-Fi with the same customization as CoX, and the same fast packed action, mixed with a proper skills system instead of levels, i'm switching :P

I voted Crime.

All that mafioso jazz really intrigues me, but I've never seen it done in an MMO before.

In fact, I haven't really played any mafioso games, lol, if anyone could point me in the direction of some good ones it would be appreciated

Post-apocalyptic for sure. Nothing beats that.

[b}Wow! Much gold. So amaze!

• What about Toon Town?

Definitely Fantasy. I don't really like all those sci-fi and those other ones.

Agree, there are several wonderfull ones to choose from, most obvious the legendary Fallout setting, though I can imagine a setting with less convenience, like Ergo Proxy, Chrono Trigger or even the recent Resident Evil: Extincion.

BTW anyone noticed the date of the OP? :)

Subscribtions: EVE, SWTOR WOW, WAR, DDO, VG, AOC, COV, FFXI, GW, RFO, Aion
+plenty of F2P, betas, trials

Female Dwarf player: WOW, VG, WAR, DDO
.
Due to the recent economic crisis and spending cuts the light at the end of the tunnel was turned off. Sincerely, God.

My choice would be High Fantasy followed closely by Sci-Fi.

Design and theme is NOT what defines a genre. Or do you think EvE and SWG fit in the same genre cause they are both using a sci-fi theme?

Why are you bickering about semantics....even though you are wrong?

Genre (n):   a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content

What the OP should have put is Low Fantasy not swords and sorcery

Conan is a good example of low fantasy.

Thanks for trying to clarify, but I guess I don't really understand the difference.  What makes one story "high" and the other "low".

Ok, I took the bull by the horns (damn bull got poo on my shoo)...and went to Wikipedia, the end all and be all of human knowledge and lore.

"Low fantasy is an umbrella term, describing various works within different sub-genres of fantasy, to contrast specific works with high fantasy. As such, it can indicate fantasy that tries not to emphasise magic; fantasy set in the real world; fantasy that contains realism and a more cynical worldview; and dark fantasy – among others.

A prominent example of low fantasy would be Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian series.[citation needed] These stories take place in a pseudo-historical setting and, while they contain powerful examples of magic, fantasy elements are rare and dangerous with no fantasy species, such as elves or dwarves, at all."

Snap!

I cannot bear to play yet another generic high-fantasy MMORPG. As well as innovative game-features that has an impact and measurable effect on how one plays a game, I'm really spell-bound by setting.

The best setting that I have seen (from an armchair perspective, as I nearly, but never managed to play the game) is Saga of Ryzom. The game looked beautiful, and managed to merge fantasy and sci-fi artwork / feel into an hauntingly original hybrid.

The only game to appear on my radar from a game-play innovation perspective is The Chronicles of Spellborn - but yet another fantasy (if more medieval) setting. *** see addendum below ***

The odd thing is that until Peter Jackson's LoTR adapation, Sci-Fi - in cinema, but especially television - makes Fantasy to be the archetypal red-headed step-child. Yet that trend is completely reversed in the video-game market.

I too, have fallen in with the herd. My first love was EQ, I then had a subcription to Eve Online on 3 separate occasions over 4 years, played AO for 2 weeks as a Froob, then played EQ2. If I look at my single player RPG games I find Baldur's Gate, Morrowind, yet I still haven't experienced Deux Ex, The Nomad Soul, et al.

I still have the DNA of a 14 year old D&D player in my choices!

Go figure.

Regards,
Riotgirl (holding out for an AO - without the first generation combat system)

*** Just discovered Fallen Earth ***

I am waiting for a good freelancer-ish MMO with a reasonable death penalty and consensual PvP.  I like the idea, just not the execution of the current space games.

• VhalnVhaln Member Posts: 3,159

Lately I've been feeling like we really need more sci-fi games.  I mean, with space travel and all that, not just a futuristic looking gameworld.  Playing the different pirate games, I've found myself thinking this would be so much cooler if these were space ships.

We've got EVE, of course, but that's a niche game more for its gameplay than the setting.

Was also recently thinking it'd be nice to see a real urban setting in an MMO.  The big metropolis, or even megalopolis, where it's all entirely within the overwhelmingly huge city, from safe market districts full of NPCs, to dangerous ghetto areas, with some sort of sci-fi spin, cyberpunk, coruscant-like, or whatever.  I know that's been done a little, but not much, and not very well.

When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
