The closest I get to religion

I love classical music, particularly German Opera.... like Wagner for instance. However I will listen to just about anything. My favorites are the usual suspects, what I would call the pop side of classical :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wagner%27s_Ring

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmina_Burana

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planets_Suite

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Seasons_%28Vivaldi%29

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appalachian_Spring

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messiah_%28Handel%29

But i just bought :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faure_Requiem

And..... its about as close as I get to religion. Listening to this music is truly spiritual. Even for a complete atheist you can easily see how anyone could listen to this and hear the "holiness" and "magical" nature of it.

Fauré on his Requiem

  • “Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.”

I know a lot of you are just not down with the whole classical scene man.... but.... you will get a taste for it listening to the list I have put up there and then your hunger will lead you to lesser known works.

Enjoy...

Fancy having a go at explaining the spirituality and emotions you feel when listening to that music, and the skill and talent that went into the compositions, in terms of evolution and natural selection, using empirical evidence?

Music is powerfull!  I am moved by music that I feel has emotion.  I feel emotion is the X factor in music.  If music can make you feel something it has that X factor.

With that said I can appreciate classical.  But, me being an gen x white dude I love electric guitar.  I love when guitarists revisit old classics.  Anyone have any links to instrumental guitar versions of great classical music?

Yes thats more or less exactly my point.

And the correctness of it is somewhat irrelevant in the presence of the glorious sound.

As long as you don't leave it up to your local preacher to interpret it for you, I think your form of religion may have a good go at it.

The closest I get to religion is stepping on to a baseball field every week.

Classical music is something really special. I'm personally not to into it, but I grew up with a dad who loved it. And the same with relatives and friends of my parents. So I have heard my fair share of classical pieces.

What amazes me time after time, is the immense talent, willingness and productivity of the composers. What some of them have made and produced, is of such quality, value and quantity that it is hard for me to imagine how they managed. And some of this is produced in just a short period of time. And it's so much more than most of us would ever achieve in a lifetime. These are some truly remarkable humans.

And of course you can't forget the people performing these and other pieces. You find people here, that master instruments in such a way that it even drives the most manly of mans into tears.
