Buy EoF for summer?/noob questions/vista patching troubleshoot.

NekokekiNekokeki Member UncommonPosts: 76
Hello everyone.  I was thinking about purchasing EQ2.  I have been looking into the game and it looks like it's made some great strides including a superb community.  I'm excited to get my account going, but I have a small dilemma.  I probably will only have time to play this throughout the summer, I tend to have no time for gaming during college.  So I was wondering which expansion I should buy, I don't play enough to hit the level cap over just one summer so is it worth buying the newest expansion Echoes of Faydwer at  $42.90? or just start out with Kingdom of Sky at $25.48? (pricegrabber).  The only thing that I thought of that could help was if I did decide to play after the summer the new expansion Rise of Kunark will be coming out and I can just buy that expansion which will include EoF.

Should I be safe and buy KoS because I probably won't even hit most of the content in EoF this summer and save $17?  Or the newb content in EoF is THAT important and definitely worth the extra money?

Thank you :)

EDIT:  Ok so I included everything I went through from what to purchase, what server to put my char, what are some good classes to play that I found (the coercer part is biased towards my style but you should find out what is good for you anyways ), and lastly the answer to the infamous patching problems with vista at the launcher.  Hope this helps everyone else starting too!

As I understand it EoF comes with all expansions, all littl eingame bonuses for each of them, it's only a few more $, may as well do it...

First, thank you for your help!!

And KoS doesn't come with any else?  Also, what is an aa tree? I don't know any EQ2 jargon yet lol.

Your best bet would be to buy the EoF retail box that includes all previous expansions (the digital download is ONLY EoF, despite being the same price).  It's usually around $40, which is the best value if you want to buy all the content.  Buying the expansions separately will cost you twice as much.

    Again thanks for your help!

Oh!  I see what it is now.   Yeah I will definitely get the EoF one.   Also, I was under the impression that I wasn't getting a free 30 days with the pack and after reading some old posts I see that I do.  So I don't have a problem spending the extra few bucks.

Ok, so after reading a lot of the old posts it conjured up some new questions that were only vaguely answered in the posts I've found.   I see AB is widely considered the best server to join, but I'm not sure what type it is (pvp/pve/rp).  I'm not sure whether or not to join a RP or a PvE yet, but which would be best to join for RP and which for PvE?  Obviously a good community and easy to find groups would be nice!

Also as for class, I generally choose what others do not. I enjoy playing classes that are a little harder to play and always needed for groups.  I don't like playing pure melee classes either.  From the looks of it in previous posts I like Monk, Conjurer, Coercer, Necromancer, Bard, and Fury so far.  Any recommendations?

AB is indeed a RP server and would probably be the best choice population wise.  For a PvE server i can only vouch for Permafrost, healthy population and great community.

If you want to play a harder class then your probably after the good old crowd controller (Coercer or Illusionist).

AB is the most popular server right now, and it's an RP server, though from my understanding a lot of people are OOC on there at all times. As for classes, if you want something no one else wants to play, pick either a bard (dirge, troub) or an enchanter (coercer, illusionist). There are plenty of monks, conjurers, necros, and furys. Coercers are a great class if you take the time to learn how to play, and wait until they get some of their better skills.

Awesome!  Thank you very much for your help!  Especially knowing that the class and/or server questions are always in abundance on the forum lol.

So it seems that a Coercer on AB is the general concensus for me.   Easy to find groups with them, very strong class, takes a little skill to play.

What is the best non-evil race for playing a Coercer?

EDIT:  I stumbled upon this in the EQ2 forums.  So, in case any other newbs have this question the answer is that race has virtually no impact on class.  Once you get around 20's (I think around there it said it was pretty low whatever it was) you will not notice any difference.  Troll mage will be about as good as an Elf etc.

    Thanks again

I also would like to point out a VISTA issue that the majority of people encounter.  As I just bought the game today it's taken me all night to find answers in forums and apply them.

The problem I encountered was at the launcher, after it scanned all of the files the update would immediately cancel.  Here's the steps I found to help:

Running EverQuest II and the LaunchPad in Windows Vista

Right Click the EverQuest II shortcut

    > Click Properties

.> Make sure the Shortcut TAB is selected

    ..> Advanced (Bottom)

...> Check the Run as administrator checkbox

    ....> Click OK

.....> Go to the Compatability TAB

......> Make sure the Run this program as an administrator (Bottom) checkbox is checked

Another thing I did that I found, not sure if both were needed or not, as just this worked for some, but you go find the file through C drive, Program files, Sony, then you find the EQII file.  Right click the file go to proporties.  Find the READ ONLY box and if it is checked you uncheck it.  Yes to all and subfolders.  After doing this and the stuff above it worked for me.  One problem is even though you unchecked the readonly box it won't save.  So you'll have to do it again next time you try to download a patch.  Will be obvious though because if it's not downloading something isn't right :).

Here's a link to the forum regarding all Vista problems.

Hope this helps any other newbs with this problem.

Coercer is the evil enchanter. You cant play it with a non-evil race. If you insist to play a high-elf, halfling or gnome coercer you have to start as illusionist and then betray to neriak or freeport. The race itself has no  real influence. You might have +2 int on some races. But +2 int is plain nothing beyond level 10.

haha yeah, I just figured that one out m8.  Finally got in game today.   I think I'm going to go with Illusionist.
