Guild Wars is NOT an MMORPG - FINAL

TiberiuxTiberiux Member Posts: 90

I am posting this to end the confusion that a few people here seem to have. This is taken from the latest "behind the scenes" with Arenanet.

"Guild Wars is a CORPG, or Competitive Online RPG. This means it is an MMORPG in which the main focus is combat."

The link can be found here:

http://gamesdomain.yahoo.com/article/23485

Plain and simple. Like I've always said, anyone arguing against this fact is ignorant.

I cannot possibly comprehend those who are still arguing it's not. Severe lack of reading comprehension or failed basic english? I dunno.

Regards,

Evil-Killa(ToA) aka Tiberiux

P.S. Stop missquoting the GW FAQ all it does is demonstrate you can't comprehend what you read.
P.S.S. In case you havn't realised the Subject is just to draw attention from the "language challenged" who are still in denial.

Your thread title is a bit misleading.

    A bit?? Its totally misleading..

LOL - Yeah. I titled the subject in such a way as to take the piss out of those that hold the title to be true.

I admit the whole thread adds to the confusion ROFL. Sorry.

    I will use baby language.

Arenanet says Guild Wars is MMORPG
MMORPG.COM says Guild Wars is MMORPG
Games Domain says Guild Wars is MMORPG

IT IS NOT A MATTER OF OPINION

    2+2=4
    GW=MMORPG

Sorry for the confusing subject line. I thought the sarcasm would be obvious.

It IS an MMO in a sense that it has thousands of players on 1 server which is exactly what an MMO means. Which can interact with eachother. But GW is based around PvP and not PvE. It's merely split into "districts" and PvE is limited to groups only. At least thats how it was in the demo. Anyone who says this isn't an MMO has no basic logic skills.

Just because they say its a CORPG doesnt mean it's not an MMO. I think the best description would be an MMCORPG.

Who cares! It is fun. The end.

  • TymoraTymora Member UncommonPosts: 1,295

Call it whatever the heck you want, who cares . . . it is still a damn good game from what I saw when playing the E3 Demo.

I would not call it a mmorpg in the sense that it is NOT an RPG at all.  There are no roleplaying elements in the game from what I have seen.  It is indeed a Combat oriented game that does very well what it sets out to do - Multiplayer combat.

Also, even though many people can play it at once, the arena and mission areas are always limited by team size.  So if there are limits to team sizes and then instanced zones are created where the combat takes place, I would argue that Guild Wars is not even a MMO.

So take out MMO and RPG and what do you get?

A very fun multiplayer game based on team combat.  So we have VFMGBOTC

    No, that's too long.

TBCMPG - Team based Combat Multiplayer Game

forget it, it's Guild Wars, and it's good.  Because it manages to NOT be tagged as a certain type of game shows you something.  The creators made a game that is different from the rest.

    Thank you, ArenaNet and NCsoft.

It is a MMORPG. But stating it as fact just because the developers call it a MMORPG is pretty flawed logic. I'm sure they are also, or soon will be, calling it the best mmorpg on the market, that doesn't make it a fact.

This is a dumbass thread and I'm tired of seeing it. I'm also really tired of seeing morons calling the game free. After the E3 demo failed to work on my system I don't think I'll even bother peaking in here anymore. Enjoy your instanced, glorified Dia-blow.

To summarize this same topic from other threads - MMORPG (and the industry) has blown into more of a general blanket.

There are so many unique acronyms with so many unique meanings that the views of MMORPGs "in general" have expanded.

As much as I can create my own unique acronym from a bowl of alphabet soup, it is still covered under the genre of MMORPG.

The term MMORPG has become a genre. How? Because games coming out no longer fit in the old genre molds. You could define a MMORPG as a "Action/Adventure/Puzzle/Strategy/Simulation/RPG..." and all the other genres under the sun. MMORPGs have become recognized in the video gaming industry as a whole.

He has a point. But then again, every game that is massively will forever be labeled an mmorpg. Regardless if its a competitive one or not. Its a general term that is used with ease. Shouldnt be anything else.

Does anyone really care anymore whether or not GW is a MMORPG or not?  I know I sure as heck don't.

And with that, I'm gonna go drool over some more WOW screens.

    this is funny... lol...

i cant believe the bickering, yes i said it, over this game.. who started it? why? who cares? its a freaking game for god sakes no one is gonna die over it(hopefully)... people play it, its fun, most people cant wait for it, neither can i! i think we, need some administration on these stupid topics, why cant people leave it at "YES IT IS AN MMORPG!"

there i said it... and im tired of saying it... do i need to have it written in the constitution? the sky? abducted into the Bible as the 11th commandment?

I think its actually more of a MMOG than what we've seen to date.

All previous MMOG's have shards, or servers, in which 5000 or so players can log into.

With Guild Wars there will be - O N E - game server in which everyone will log into.

Presumably there could be 100,000 (or more) loged into the one and only "world server"

I think you're wrong. There will be at least 2.

Anet has stated that there will be 2 game worlds. 1 for primarily english(standard keyboard) speaking players. Another for Korean(chinese type keyboards) speaking players.

    Which is a good thing.

Does it really matter if the game is labeled a mmorpg or not? For crying out loud, it is just a lable. A word. That's all.

The more important question is, do you like the game or not? How many threads on this are there going to be? ::::27::::::27::::::27:: I could care less whether or not GW is labeled a mmorpg, corpg, morpg, or whatever. ::::12:: I label GW, a game I like and will probably play.

That open alpha/beta test they had for E3 was hella fun. I think of guildwars more like a FPS then an MMORPG. There's some character development but all content is instanced based and some great PvP.

The graphics are a tad outdated but all in all it will be a fun game to play and I'm looking forward to it. Comparing GW to WoW or EQ2 and such is idiotic. It's along the same lines as comparing Diablo 2 to Everquest. Two different types of games.

I love the E3 thing, it was great for the days it was up. It makes a change from the mostly boring current MMORPG's that are out. From all the MMORPG's that I have played (Trust me thats alot) I would say that guild wars could possibly be up there (When its released) with Neocron, Everquest and Star Wars Galaxies in my DAVES TOP MMORPG LIST, I think it looks like it has alot of potential.
