The OP didn't even write a single peice of  body text and we have a gazillion replies and cross replies ... wow !

Anyways I am sure there are few games in history with a bad a launch as VG has had. Though even if someone names some VG still must rank down there with the stinkers? Just look @ this forum or the fact the game had no forums itself till recently. Says something !

Its the newbs to the MMO scene that over dramatize the Vanguard launch.

As for the forums, it was a specific development decision to foster some sort of community, I'm not really sure, I didn't like the decision, but the point is it that it was a concious one. They had forums and specifically closed them down.

As for games without main forums, the extremely successful Dark Age of Camelot (EQ's old rival, and to this day, the game with the best PvP system) still does not have forums, and it's over 6 years old... so guess what?

    Says nothing!

Wow's launch was amazing- the only issue they had was server loads. Who could have figured an EQ type game, normally a market of 500K or so, hit a couple million within weeks? Any game with a launch that large would have done the same thing, a PC, even a server cluster, can only be pushed so far before it chokes. AND Blizzard refunded lost play time to it's customers. I was unable to play Vanguard for more than an hour or two at a time at best, often dumped in dungeons and whatnot at random, logging back in dead, minus XP. Sometimes I'd log back in, and look like Michael Jackson or Leatherface or something. Others I'd log in and be max weight, and min height, etc. I left the game do to that, it got annoying to say the least. Vanguard had a horrible launch, by any standards. They had little server overload, if that. Servers were comfortably crowded, but not too laggy. But the bugs.. that Sigil COULD have done something about. Instead, they did several fanfaire deals, went to E3 and such, Brad McQuaid took a vacation while the game was at critical mass... In short, if it could have been wrong/gone wrong/been done wrong.. they managed it .

I was psyched about that game since I first heard of it, 4 years back. So I'm hardly some random basher. Nor do I care what SOE does with SWG- that was over a year ago. Life goes on. Heck I don't mind the game anymore. The point is, Sigil messed up. Bigtime. Alot of people didn't run into these issues, and that's great for them. Wish I was one of them, when the game DID work, it was great fun and showed a ton of potential. Maybe in a year or so, SOE will have beaten the bugs out some more, and I'll give it another shot. I got station pass, so here's hoping, right?

I think its an odd move to have no forums then suddenly have forums. I dunno given the quality of the game on release was it an attempt to put fingers in ears and go "LA la la la la!". I lean towards this. Despite your example not havingh official forums is ... odd IMHO. Anyways I steered well clear of launch debates, the Sigil debacle and performance issues not the mention the massive spanking the game got from many. I also have not said anything about SOE getting on on th act when many people despise SOE.

As for only newbs seeing the drama in this, no way VG is Quality A* melodrama ( as much as melodrama  can be) . Well its not lthe greatest  launch in history is it ? It may not be the worst I admit but its not been all sweet smelling roses. Personally I cannot wait to hear what happens next. This game is more interesting to watch the developments around than to play.

I'm feeling optomistic today .. so who knows maybe one day VG performance and quality and content will match its past hype and kill off the melodrama.. *cough*

Just for clarification, they closed down the old BETA forums. They always had tech help and a few other boards open. The only thing they did recently (and that was 2 or 3 months ago) was add a general forum. The forums have always been there, they just got slightly expanded.
