In my opinion EQ was the first MMORPG to have such a huge content base. The amount of weapons and spells was amazing. The lvl of detail in world design was perfect! I still remember the days of first exploring Blackburrow or Unrest. They had over 800 spells at launch and each caster had a variety if spells that had fun spells and dmg spells.
I feel current fantasy MMORPG like DAOC and Horizons lacks all intrest in its content. DAOC spell lists are pretty much fireball 1-50. No fun spells and it gets drab. Dungeon design is terrible. I feel EQ had the perfect gameworld when it comes to content. No other 3D MMORPG to date offers so many spells and areas to hunt.
Lets hope EQ2 will be like EQ in regards to content. From what I have seen EQ2 might be the only chance to recapture that new feel. Lots of info leaking and it sounds fun when NPC talk and have lifes in the gameworld(clock based schedules).
Sound off your opinions and vote!
Whats your opinions on this? Does anyone else agree that even in sonys evil EQ had what it took to capture with its content? Now EQ2 could be the next King?

If you ever say again that EQ dungeon design is good *COUGH*PATHING*COUGH*...
OK... EQ had a lot of content... but they way you went thought it suked a hella lot. Camping there, ding ding ding, move to new area, camping there, ding ding ding. The only goal 90% of the players had was to get more powerful items (I know some hypocrites will flame me for saying that). What pushes a guild to kill the same boss everytime it spawns? not exploration, not RPing, not the storyline, not the challenge.... LOOT. I had fun the first 2 weeks exploring the game then everything was just made in the same fashion. I hit 50... I said yay finally, they released an expansion, I said woot new items! Epic Quests! Got to 60... released another expansion, got better items, released another expansion, ... it's ALWAYS the same thing you do with the same people (unless you're a guild hopper). Wait for the pull... press the attack button and go take a nap. The most fun I ever had on EQ was when I EBayed my account for 900$US which was grocely overpaid for a boring game.
I hope EQ players will understand that someday.
"I am trying to see things from your perspective but I just can't get my head that far up my @$$."
I understand it But EQ still kept me involved for 3 years. DAOC for 2 months, AO for 2 weeks, Horizons for 3 days.
EQ2 hoping for awhile
EQ had lots of flaws but the content is what kept me!

WoW setting a milestone?... in what?...
there nothing new there at all...
games like UO (1st real popular MMORPG), Lineage 1 (most popular MMORPG in the world), EQ (1st good 3D MMORPG, good content too)), and AO (1st and only good sci-fi MMORPG)... now those set milestones...
no matter where u come from... no matter where u are now... no matter where ur going... its all about the EXP

Lets see. EQ came to market when only a pair of MMORPG games were on the candle. EQ got a hugh amount of subscribers from the beggining and for along 5 years it has been the most populated game.
If EQ is so bad game why should 500.000 players still continue playing ?
There are several ways to enjoy with EQ. In fact i know people that maintain their subscription just for chating with a great community of players.
I would like to expect that some company will release a new game, with new lore, new content ect with the same basis of EQ.
BTW I hate PvP playing, maybe because i am not enough clever to win to another person or maybe because i dont like to wait for people to play and i want that the processor of the server gets me mobs to fight with at the same time that i want to do
My hopes are in MIDDLE EARTH ONLINE. And you ?
Tumguror. Warlord of Odisea. Everquest.
Perhaps i'm just remember EQ through rose-tinted glasses here but I still thikn it's the most involving MMORPG i've played to date. Yeah everyone almost gave up after a week of hunting giant field rat pelts for their n00b missions but after that it was great fun. I'm yet to come accross an MMO with such a great and active community (although DAoC is close).
YEs there wasn't really much competition for it when it came out, but even today i'n terms of community + roleplaying it can hold it's own, I just wish they'd hurry up with the promised graphics update.
I've got high hopes for EQ2, i really hope they don't make a mess of it, there's a lot riding on EQ2 and if they pull it off then I find it hard to think how any other mmorpg out or in-production can compete.
I'm not a big PvP player either, mostly because I always get killed :P but also i'm more into the adventuring + crafting side of mmorpg's than pure combat.

Currently Playing : EQ2 of course
Erm from what you wrote you went thru at least 3 expansions you spent a whooping 2 years in EQ.So tell me if the game was so bad why did you spent 2 years there(u said 50 which ws launch.60 which was RoK.another expansion scars of velious.another-PoP).Considering by time PoP came out there was UO,L1,AO,DAoC,AC1 all in full swing it can't be because there was nothing else to play.
Just pointing out because i see a lot of people post here that EQ was a boring game yet many played it at least 1 year and some just quit recently after playing since 1999.So how can you play such a boring game for years??
I disagree with your premise that EQ was the precedent for MMORPGS:
UO seems to have been the first substantial MMORPG (of course this is just an opinion).
AO had a much more fleshed out character-creation-system along with fluid player distributions etc.
Although AO might not have attracted the same numbers as EQ, it made a very strong impression (in terms of standards)
WoW will offer as much (if not more) content than EQ and will have an engrossing combat system as well (I detested EQ's system).
Then again there would be EQ2... which seems like an expansion of EQ with pretty graphics.
My money is on AO's upcoming expansion (although I doubt that it will gain the necessary momentum and fan-support to reach anything near WoW status) or WoW (because I believe in blizzard

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
I don't have a opinnion... But this is what I believe EQ SUCKS!!!! even EQ2 has crapy graphics!!! Down with EverSh*tie!!!
Yo I didn't voted cause Sony is tight ya all. Ya can't hate a company cuase of a crapy game... Like pokemon you can't hate Wizards of the Coast for helping to produce it...
.Hack!!!! All say HELL YEAH!! TO a real mmorpg of .Hack!!!!!
all i know is that if ANY game set the "stone marker" it was deffinatly Lineage 1...
most popular game in the world since it started in late 97 to this day, AND it was the 1st game to really emphisize on clans/grouping/partying and such with its mass castle sieges and dragon raids...
2D graphics or not, it owns...
no matter where u come from... no matter where u are now... no matter where ur going... its all about the EXP
--------------------------------------
WoW is good you can tell by looking at the screen shots, medieval nerd but not as tight as .Hack if it is ever to becomes a real mmorpg. Da EQ games still sucks!!!!!
My take on this issue:
EQ was released, as the first 3d mmorpg. At the time of it's release, there was literally no compition of any sort in the market. Of course, regardless of how balanced or well created it was, people would either have to play that or UO, and EQ looked a lot better then UO. After people started playing everquest, as is human nature, they simply did not want to stop and try somthing new. So regardless of how good EQ may or may not be, it hardly got to where it is today by being "a markerstrone". Similarly with how CS was the first HL mod and CS just happens to be the most popular HL mod for example. It got to where it was today by being first onto the market - and no other reason.
The true first MMOs were actually MUDs, which were text-only interfaces that exist today. If you want to try one, look up Medevia or Aardwolf, and play. You'll be suprised how a game with only text can play very similar to anything with 3d graphics like EQ.

I equate EQ to MMORPG as I did QUAKE to Internet gaming. Quake was no doubt the first game to get mass play on the Internet, was it the best at everything at the time. Of course not, but it sure had a lot going for it and it did "jump-start" the internet gaming world. Of course only those that were on the Internet from the days that the WWW would remember this! Can we say mozzilla
Anyway, EQ was the game that really got MMORPG to take off and get noticed, you can't argue the point. Whether you loved it, hated it or just knew it was there. You have to give it at least credit for really being the start of what has become a great genre!
There is a ton about EQ I really wish was fixed/replaced/destroyed hehe, but I sure respect the game for what it has started and really hope the new MMORPG took notice of what EQ, DAoC, UO, AO, and all the others did well and in what the didn't

Eeek.. can't believe you said that... that's like judging a book by its cover. No good
I've seen some PRETTY games that had some PRETTY crappy gameplay.

Well it is a bit hard to answer your poll since EQ was created and made dynamic by a different company then the one that currently runs it. Sony did not take over controll of EQ untill around the Luclin expansion.
The original creaters of EQ are the team that are now running a new company called Sigil Games Online.
http://www.sigilgames.com/
As far as EQ having been a milestone. In it's hayday yes it most assuredly was.
However under the controll of SOE it has declined heavily and continues to spiril downward at an alarming pace. Sadely to say as long as Sony is at the helm that is likely to continue.
In answer to the question " Will any other MMORPG compete?" to me the answer is clearly YES!
Since the same core team of developers, as well as many other highly talented people are currently working hard on the Sigil Games Online project titeled Vanguard : Saga of Heros.
http://vanguardsoh.com/
With all of thier combined expierence and talent to work with as well as being able to learn from thier own past. The team at Sigil is likely to show us far more with Vanguard then any other game will ever be able to provide.
thats like the dumbest shit i've heard all week...
i'll TRY and point out everything wrong with this post, however long it may take...
"Lineage 1 set the milestone" ya... it was the 1st game to use real, large scale castle sieging, and for almost 7 years has had the highest number of subscriptions around...
"It's not the most popular mmorpg" ... large number of subscriptions = popular... largest number of subscriptions = most popular... makes sense to me...
"Not many people in US and Europe play Lineage 1" ... much like in the same way not many people in Asia play American MMORPG's... although im sure u would have no problem saying that a game like Everquest is the most popular...
"But to say Lineage set a milestone is silly, because it suck."... so just because u personally didnt enjoy it, means that the rest of the world hates it, and it never made a mark on the world of MMORPG's?... wow ur "personal oppinion" is some powerful shit...
"Most people in other countries hate it, and say it suck"... like what?... Europe, and America?... as for Japan, Korean, China and such... they love it...
ur not seeing the big picture... ur just stuck in ur little world thining that if u say something sucks, it must make it so... like it or not, Lineage is a part of MMORPG history...
no matter where u come from... no matter where u are now... no matter where ur going... its all about the EXP

simply because Korea and China plays it which makes up over 25% of the world population....Im sure if they had the same amount of access to other mmorpgs they'd play those also. Lineage 1 (or 2) offers absolutely nothing new under the sun

well, its true...lol, thats why Lineage 1 rates at 4.9 ROFLMAO also, Japan isn't a real die-hard fan of Lineage 1 or 2....like I said in my post above the reason why they have the most players is because of the sheer amount of people living there and the little variety of games they have to choose from.
Take Godzilla....Im pretty sure that game is a mega hit in most Asian countries but you wont see a whole lot of people praising that movie here...just a few alloted fan clubs. Before Lineage ][ came to the presses many mmorpg players never heard of the lineage series...and those that has had often snickered at the news headlines how Koreans take mmorpgs way overboard in beating the hell outta people in real life when they got PKed in the game.
Like I said in the post above this...Lineage 2 really offers nothing new under the sun, and I can pick dozens of mmorpgs that are far and above linage 1....but this thread isnt for that discussion...its about EQ

I have tried pretty much every fantasy mmorpg that has come out and none can really compare to EQ imo.
EQ had its problems but it is still infinitely more fun then any other mmorpg I have played and has a lasting appeal that has been totally lacking in the others. So many of the key features that made EQ a living immersive world have just been totally overlooked in the newer mmorpgs that I really wonder if any of the dev teams on other games really understood what made EQ popular in the first place.
Core structures of the game like meaningful and varied factions and diverse cultures have been almost completely abscent in newer mmorpgs.
I believe the team on Vanguard is one of the few teams that understands this and is developing a game that will finally really compete with EQ.
People seem to be missing the point of this thread i beleive. Lots of you are slating EQ and 'biggin up' Lineage or another game etc.
However the original post states that EQ is a milestone game, and undoubtably it was. Just as doom was a milestone game, then Quake came along as the second milestone. EQ was more or less the first huge game in the genre which everyone knows about, thus setting a milestone.
Just because it may not have been good, or the most popular game ever does not take this fact away.
I am holding out very little hope for any of the MMORPG's that are due to come out soon, i wish somebody would release the original UO but with better graphics Failing that i am waiting for D&D online, because that is the only game actually using the original rules of the genre (which for some reason people seem to complain about, yet they are tried and tested and hugely popular).
