mmo's with worse graphics > good graphics

wyvexwyvex Member UncommonPosts: 346

Thinking back to the old school mmo's i used to play like Everquest Online Adventures, Everquest 1, Asheron's call, Runescape, ect. They seemed to be so much more fun then the new mmo's that have better more realistic graphics like, EVE, LOTR, WOW, FFXI, Everquest 2 ect. It could be that i think that cause either i liked playing mmo's with bad graphics or the games back then were just better made. Opinions?

You forgot “no graphics”, I still think MUDs are more fun than any MMO out there.

The problem isn't that those games were more fun, it's that the current crop of games haven't changed anything since those games came out so it's like playing any of those older games.  Except, of course, with the newer games the rose-colored glasses are off and you are seeing them for what they really are, dull, stagnant experiences.

The real reason you loved low graphic games was back them memory sizes were smaller so they had to work harder with what they had so altough the graphics were bad compared to todays the gameplay had more work done to it to make up for the low grahics. THATS where the secret is gameplay.

Actually it should be more like: Gameplay > Graphics. Too many tards overlook perfectly good games just cuz the graphics are outdated or not up to par with the rest of the games out there. I dont care if i can see to the microscopic level on a game if it plays like crap.

Why are you listing WoW as having realistic graphics?

The gameplay was alot better, yes. Though I'm sure that it was not due to the lack of graphics. The technology wasn't that far yet, so that couldn't be too impessive.

I think gameplay is more important than graphics of course but its best when its a mixture of both, after all it is 2007 and the nintendo days are pretty much over.

GAMES WERE NOT BETTER, YOU ARE JUST OLDER AND MORE EXPERIENCED.

low graphics, because i have played plenty of MMO's, and not only do the low/no graphic games have better gameplay, but they run better. Some game designers seem to focus all on graphics and not on what the players can do. Runescape, for instance, had some of the best gameplay, except for combat, that sucks. There were TONS of things to do, and the graphics were really low. Ran in-browser, no download necessary, and free to play. Lots of low-graphic MMO's are F2P too.

people say old games are better gameplay wise but having tried some mega drive/SNES games recently it isn't true. Its just different and maybe kind of refreshing that its reductionist.-you don't have to take in that much detail, or possibilities. Same with mmorpgs really gameplay isn't any better in old mmorpgs but it is different. AC for example with its dodging and that, EQ with its stronger emphasis on a world and adventure. But this isn't to say newer mmorpgs haven't improved things in some aspects- they have. Like games now compared to 5/10 years ago use a lot more buttons for instance. WoW over previous mmorpgs has a lot more gameplay abilities.

I think that Triumvirate really nailed it, computer games are not about graphics they are about immersion. When the first generation of mmos came out they were brand spanking new, shiny and groundbreaking, the ones we play today have improved the graphics say 200%, but game play and immersion only 15%. So no matter how sparkly-shiny-clystar-clear-cutting edge the graphics are in current games, (sadly) they do not posses the same combined entertainment value as the classics.

I guess it is a bit like the Matrix trilogy, the first one that introduced us to the universe was the best of the three, because we had no idea what to expect, it did a good job at showing us what that universe had to offer and left us wanting more. Now the second one was much more predicable even if it had (slightly) better effects. Same applies to the third and if they kept on making them you would see the same trend as you see in computer games, each next would look better then the last one, but would offer little improvement in excitment without breaking out and trying to revolutionalize the whole concept (be it games or movies).

The new and old games mentioned in the first post are very similar (EVE is an exception - I'd say the lack of fun there is a matter of taste), so I'd say people had more fun back then because it was something new. It's just like playing your first character in any MMOG is more exciting than playing number 23.

When MMOs first came out the devs didn't anticipate all the ways players would exploit all the differnt things you could do in the games.  There was a lot more freedom, but that led to greifing in PvP and exploiting in PvE.  Eventually people started selling the in game items, money, and characters for gold.

These days devs can't build a world with that type of freedom because too many people are waiting to expoit it.

Well i kind of disagree here when WoW came out the graphics were ok for the time tho even then the experienced eye could see through the art style for what it was really there for.

As for an example of a great game with non top of the range graphics well look at Resident Evil 4 for the Wii. Compared to the other versions of it [excluding the PC Version] Its graphics are pretty less than say the other versions but the gameplay is still great as is the story.

Agreed, I think graphics are as important as gameplay... I guess they both aim differen audiences though. Younger fellows probobly prefer shiny graphics to groundbreaking gameplay, and the opposite for older gamers.

Of course correct me if I'm wrong.

It's all a matter of taste. But being that mmos are about becoming your character it sure does help to create that illusion by having something that looks pretty real with fluid movement on screen as opposed to a square headed stick figure doing "The Robot" and hitting other square headed figures.
