If you could play one paper RPG

GreenChaosGreenChaos Member Posts: 2,268

Given time and enough interested people with the same schedule (always tricky) what one paper RPG would you play or are playing?

I’m ingested from a MMO player’s point of view.

For me it would be White Wolf’s Mage: The Ascension

But when I was hanging with a RPG group the game to play was Vampire.

I think Mage: The Ascension had a great world and a very unique play style.  Basically players would have to make up how a spell works on the spot and the GM would have to agree with it or not.  I think it would make for some very creative play.

    Ooh great topic

I have played a Tremere in Vampire, a Silent Strider in Werewolf, and I used to play clerics in D&D.

If I had to pick one to play right now, I would pick Forgotten Realms D&D again. Well if I had a good DM and group to play with.

I did think the Technocracy was pretty cool in MAGE but never got to play that one.

As above, D&D 3.5, with Forgotten Realms setting. Every time, except no substitutes

    Rifts.

    Or Nightspawn.

I really couldn't decide between the two.

    Wish Darkfall would release.

Shadowrun or Battletech/Mechwarrior.  Alternating Friday's every week for the past 11 years.

Battletech universe, i'd like in an MMO.... mech fun customisaton or running around as an infantry man... so much fun.

was also the name of good cartoon series when i was younger (based on the universe), and the mechassault on the xbox first got me obsessed in xbox live :) that and wolfie.

don't remember useing my pen n paper for warhammer, except in the quests addon which was like d&d warhammer style.

warhammer 40k, we just need paper to keep track of the wounds and turn limit.

good news though GW will think about handing over 40K if WAR turns out really well. :) who doesn't wanna play as a Spacemarine or Eldar ... bet 'baneblades' won't be drivable in that game unless you got a crew of 10 other people :-p

Warhammer 40k is already in development.

From Ten Ton Hammer interview with Erik Mogensen

Ten Ton Hammer: Fans all know the contract was signed with THQ for the Warhammer 40K MMO game. Have there been any developments over the last two months?

Erik:  It’s still early days, but I can tell you that I’ve been to visit the developer, Vigil Games, to meet the team and discuss initial game concepts.  We had some exciting first meetings and they even had a few pleasant surprises to show me.  I’m really looking forward to working with Vigil, and from what I’ve seen I think the 40K MMO could be something very special.  The guys at Vigil certainly impressed me with both their knowledge of, and their passion for, Warhammer 40,000.  That’s an excellent place to start!

Ten Ton Hammer: What are your hopes for an MMO set in the 40K universe? Do you think it will turn into just another FPS game or will there be more depth?

Erik: Well, first of all, my hopes are that it isn’t ‘just another’ anything.  And who said it was going to be an FPS?  Nice try, Fuller!  I’m on to your mind games, and you’re getting no secrets out of me!

My hope for the Warhammer 40,000 MMO is very similar to what my hope has been for WAR all along.  I want it to be both a great MMO, and a great representation of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.  I want it to appeal to those who don’t know an Avatar of Khaine from a Tyranid just as much as it does to someone with thousands of painted miniatures on display in their home.  Ultimately though, I want the game to rock!

interesting, *crosses fingers* that'll it will be good and follow the lore. Doubt i'd want to play as an Avatar for example... i'd be quite happy as an Eldar Guardian or Warlock.

i expect imperial guardsmen to die a LOT though.... which is why the armies are far numourous.

Imperial Guardsman v Spacemarine... i mean you know, goodbye guardsman

I think he was referring to the Warhammer and 40K RPGs, not the wargames.

I'm also pinning for the 40K RPG, which got pushed back to about the same date as WAR's release.

ahhh i do remember Warhammer Quest though, that was pretty awesome gam,e since not many caught onto the random dungeons, creating your own personal characters and the huge RPG book that contained info about towns/villages, buying new items, increasing stats.

didn't take off, a bit like necromunda

Never played it surprisingly enough, I have played Forgotten Realms, Dark Sun, and Dragon Lance for D&D worlds. Didnt ever hear of people playing Ravenloft either, werent the players bound to die no matter what? Like some wierd thing in the Ravenloft world.

  • cheshyrecatcheshyrecat Member Posts: 137

i grew up playing D&D.  From old school basic d&d to the more modern versions.  I remember ravenloft from 2nd edition.  I loved that setting.  Yes, life expectancy in a ravenloft setting was...no high.

But since i started playing warhammer fantasy i've been very impressed with the story line..actually very similar to ravenloft (ravenloftian?).

I loved Warhammer Quest and Necromunda.  Wished they would have gone further.

Always was interested in trying Shadowrun myself, never managed to find a group.

    1. Rifts  (It's got everything you could want for RPG)

    2. D&D  (Ruleset doesn't matter if you have a good DM)

    3.  World of Darkness  (Vampire/WW)

    4. Battletech  (Giant robot combat is cool)

Our party is in deep trouble in a dungeon in Drakar & Demoner. I hope we can get together and finish what we started
