I'm playing EQ2 with my wife and we are loving it. We have kids and it's fun to get on and play for a few hours and accomplish something. However I am noticing that more and more time is being spent traveling back and forth from Neriak to Butcherblock and I imagine it will get worse. We port back every night to sell, buy, craft etc and then make the run thru Nektolus again the next night. My question is are we missing something? Is that just a drawback to big zones? Is their some way to cut back long travel times between starter cities and current zones?

neriak has a bit of a travel problem yes.
Have you found the porter in neriak dockside market area? Buy a ticket and you can port to nek or TS spires. If you port to TS spires and one of you has evac, you can evac to TS docks. Also being ported directly to spires makes for quicker travel to KoS.
I also have a feeling the sea gate in neriak may be functional again soon which would help.
Oh and to get to DoF the carpet is in darklight wood at wonder camp.
To answer your question about if time of travel gets worse then going to EoF, no not really .................. EoF is about the worst travel time.
Its funny how people can look at the same object, but feel completely different about it. I find that travel in EQ2 is WAY too easy and simple. The only thing I hate with the amount of zoning, which is annoying. Otherwise, I find the distances and time moving not annoying.

First of all, what classes do you play?
Wizards and warlocks can get portal spells at level 25 that can send one person or their group to the spires in Antonica, the Commonlands, or Greater Faydark. Furies and wardens can get portal spells at level 25 to open portals to the druid rings in the Commonlands, Antonica, Butcherblock, Greater Faydark, and Steamfont. You need to pick up a leaf from a bush at any of those druid rings before you can use a druid portal.
So then, before you start the long run to Butcherblock or somewhere just ask in /ooc in Neriak if there's a druid or sorcerer that can port you. Sorcerer's ports use an item that costs money so you may want to tip them.
If you both have the Splitpaw adventure pack you can do a few quests there to gain the trust of the Splitpaw gnolls. That gives you a shard that you can use to call to the Splitpaw den and then easily zone out to the Steppes, next to Coldwind Station.
Also, as someone mentioned any scout above level 25 can evac you to the beginning of a zone to save some running time.
There are mounts and spells that can make you and your group run faster and you can buy Spirit of the Wolf totems that give you 24% run speed also.
Othesus - Dirge - Lucan DLere
Vaspar - Fury - Lucan DLere
Sweet. I knew I was missing something. I am lvl 26 Berzerker and my wife is lvl 24 Fury so she is real close to getting druid ring ports that will help out. Thanks for the info. As I said, otherwise I am loving the game. I wouldn't even mind travel if my 3 year old would sleep thru the night. That tends to make me in a hurry sometimes to get to the meat and potatoes of a game. In the old days of EQI I didn't mind a 45 minute run somewhere.
