I encountered something yesterday that I found very odd. I was made fun of by making a male character (im a guy), I always thought it was kinda weird for guys to play girls but, I dont judge... dont really care either. Anyways I found this very odd and quite ironic that I was being belittled for playing my gender IRL. Has anyone else encountered this? Maybe it was just a draenai thing
Comments
cause draenei are fat =[
actually i've never encountered that I honestly beleive games should have a male/female thing on the account activation form that make you have to make a male or female whichever one you originally chose becuase dealing with gender confusion is quite aggrivating and people abuse it too
personally I find it wierd that anyone would play a char that wasn't the same sex as them in real life, I know there are the arguments like: 'who wants to watch a guys ass when you are a guy' etc. but these are games and I have no more desire to watch a female char run about than a male one. I would, however like to portray as much of me as possible in my char so I stick with male chars. I have no problem with guys playing female roles, its just not for me.
Hmm never been made fun of made both and they knew i was male.
Yeah, I seriously do think it's a Draenei thing. Male Draenei just look stupid in my opinion, while the females are pretty hot in a animated video game character kind of way. >.> I've had many people agree with me about the males being unappealing. They're too thick, and they sort of waddle around in a sad attempt at walking.
Addressing the gender issue, I see no problem whatsoever with people playing any gender they choose. Unless the character looks stupid... ^-^
I find in SWG, that if you play a male entertainer people wont give you the time of day. I have seen countless times players try to talk to the AFK twi'lek girl in the corner before they will tak to the guy in the center of the room /singing random things & telling jokes. So I guess in that particular case, you almost have to play a female to get noticed.
This must be one of the most brought up subjects since the Internet was invented. I have no problem with any race, gender, class, profession, whatever anyone wants to be and I have no idea why anyone does. If some strange person fools you into doing something dodgy in a game, that's just your fault. It makes me wonder what those people are actually looking for when they play an MMO. There are so many other places, even on line, where you can find a date or a mate or just about anything else you can think of. If you do want to use an MMO for dating or cybersex or something and care what the person's real gender is, fine... hope you're careful. Why not make sure you know who you're dealing with before you jump behind a tree and make a fool of yourself in public? Is restraint (err... I don't mean that in a pervy way ) so difficult in a game?
If you treat everyone in the game the same way then it wont matter what gender they are in game or real life.
Because you are in a guild or area over run by adolescent twelve year olds.
Since it's all make-believe anyway, I don't quite understand why anyone would care if you play your own gender or the opposite. Who cares? I mean, I'm not really an elf or a dwarf or a halfling or a twi'lek in real life either. Should I be limited to only playing humans? And if you think the only limit should be gender, that seems like it's your hang-up, and nothing else.
After all, male/female is not the only relevant issue. One of the most famous dancers in SWG n the early days, was a 50-something grandmother. Are you going to ban HER from playing a young sexy toon (often the only choice you even HAVE in these MMOs if you pick a female) because she's a grandma? Should only young sexy women be allowed to play young sexy female characters, so you can keep having your fantasies about them?
Because after all that's what this all boils down to... boys who want to be sure the sexy girl they are fantasizing over is, in fact, a sexy girl.

I look at these games as entertainment. Since I often use third person perspective, as a man, I find that I would rather watch an attractive woman interact with the virtual world than watching a guy from behind (those blood elves sure are cute in WoW, as are the half elves in EQ2, and the dark elves in Vanguard). Of course, in first person perspective games, I prefer to play male characters. In my mind the game is to entertain me. I suppose some might consider this strange, but those people (and this is not meant to be bad or good) might look at the virtual world as some sort of social interaction that has value beyond the actual game play. To me its a game. Since I pay for the priviledge of playing, I play on my terms.
Just another perspective.
I am a guy, and I play only male characters because I want to feel its kinda myself, a role which I fill, and I just am no female. But I must say, especially in WOW the male characters are rather ugly. And FAT! Man, why is every male Dranei or human fat? Is humanity only made of bulky people?
Other than that, a lot of people know female characters are proven to be treated much "kinder", they are given more free stuff, more support and are less likely verbally attacked. Personally I think many people purposefully "cheat" by playing the "oh I am just a girl knowning nothing *giggle*" - role.

Never been in that situation :O
Who makes fun of the gender in the game?? if they make fun of male or female.....that presumes that they are making fun of themselves then ....i think....
Cheers

I have played a male entertainer for 2 years in SWG, so I know what you say, BUT: thats exactly the reason NOT to switch and support the trend even more! In RL we have a great culture of music and dance performed by males, all the rock bands out there, and dancers as well. I am no Ballet fan at all, but Footloose dancers, Fred Astaire or Gene Kelley were as manly as any man! Don't support this trend by giving into it.

I want to make androgynous characters in an MMO someday, that's if they let that happen. QQ

There's some weird homophobia going on in MMORPGs, lots of claims of "I don't want to stare at a male ass for hours at a time." Apparently, pretending to be a woman is less "gay" than looking at the armored back of a CG male.
I don't insist on my characters being sexually appealing - if I want to be aroused, I'll look at something a bit more high-quality than MMO graphics.
heres what i think. men who play as girls probably dont get much irl or they are gay. some actually think its pretty funny to mess with other guys like that. to those people all i have to say is you have alot of free time on your hands or not many friends irl.
heres why i play as a guy most of the time. i dont like women fighting. men need to be men and do the fighting not the women, they can use magic and stuff but leave the fighting to the men. its just my opinion.
The real question is, why are people attracted to fictional, animated, online characters. Are people really that desperate?
I would make a female character just to get the special treatment that geeky teenage boys give to female characters. Someone gave my wife 50,000 gil and two rings in FFXI just because she was a girl.
I have guy friends who play female characters, and it suits them quite well. People underestimate them in combat because their avatar is female.
In short, there are advantages to playing a female character that can be exploited by a savvy male in RL.
You're joking, right?
Honestly though, I always play male characters cause I like to personalize my toons, make them an extension of me in some way, semi-rp'er at heart. Along with that though, I don't really care what gender people play, game is for entertainment. I do however assume that every female toon is actually a guy in r/l, especially if they're asking for stuff in-game. I'm always slightly surprised when new girl avatar guildie hops in vent and is actually a female.
I have no problem with folks playing opposite-gender characters. Gay bashing is wrong.
I always play male characters because i don't want some loser in his moms basement hitting on me constantly. i played a female ONCE and only once in an MMO and it was on PSO. Now when making my character i was looking for one that was right in the middle stat wise and the Female Elf was the most balanced, yes in PSO (for those that never played) the stats differed from race/class and sex. the male human was more physical dmg with little magic and she was 50/50. and being new to the game i didn't know what i would wanna do so i tried her.and i had idiots saying shit to me constantly grossed me the hell out. i'm sure its not that bad anymore , just take one sicko to annoy me.didn't do or say anything "girly" hell i made her as butch as possible, had a big ass spiked hair even a damn eye patch.i think her name was even "ImaDude", was usually just some random idiot running by in the lobby that would say crap.
after i got sick of the losers i made a male robot hunter, never got bugged again.
I say that if a guy gives junk to "girls" because they are supposedly attractive, then it's there fault.
I'm in almost total agreement with your statment .
In many games I have made a male main ,and a female alt .
For my female chars, guess what happened when they found out I was male. Nothing.
The reason ? I didn't ask for favors/stuff ,I was polite ,and I never said either way until asked .
On the other hand (like others have said) many races in many games, the the male skins look bad ,limited in selections,and/or half finished . Almost forcing me to play a female char so I could at least have a char I'm kinda happy with.
A little saying of mine is "More people play female chars because developers like making female skins."
Last thing I'll say is that while playing the other side of the fence the only people that really seem to care is the people that is looking to cyber, and well....I guess that works for some people.
