You are such a total liar Thamoris. Literaly 10's of thousands of people tried and quit Vanguard because of the shitty performance, and you know it. Sigil made some minor efforts to improve performance and SOE has plans to improve performance, but it hasnt happened yet. You need to quite blowing smoke dude you are coming across as an idiot. Eq2 is a great Stable well performing game. Join a guild or bring a buddy though.
hrm, he isn't lying, I'm on a geforce 8800 gts 320mb and I'm getting 50-60 om max setting out in the open and around 20-30 in cities. The weird thing is that even if I set it on medium or low I will still get the same performance, so I guess I have pretty crappy performance when I'm on low setting but good performance on high setting if that make sense.
All the game need is tweaking and polishing by sony, it can run smooth, but it just doesn't always do that.
I don't think he's lying concerning the performance issues either. I'm running am AMD 5200+ w/ 2 megs and and 8600GTS. There certainly is some stutter here and there but not to the degree if bothers me that much, although I sure do hope they get rid of it. Aside from that, I've run into a few bugs and video anomalies, but overall no big deal.
As compared to EQ2, EQ2 isn't bad at all, but it was a bit too linear and structured for me. VG is more open and I feel like I'm a lot freer in what I do. It feels more like the successor to EQ, which I like. It's a lot less painful than EQ, of course.
Ok so I have vanguard still sealed right beside me right now and i want to make sure i made the right decision. Now it was between Vangaurd and EQ2. I want to know if the fact that i want a seamless world and flying freeroam mounts as well as boats can out wiegh the bugs right now. Im patient enough to deal with some bugs for awhile .
I just want to know an honest opinion if i should open it and install it and screw getting eq2 or if i should return it for EQ2. Please quick responce if possible as i am ancy to play lol.
Game performance seems highly specific to ones own rig. I don't have any game breaking performance issues on my
AMD 3500 rig. I play on balance settings with about 20-30 fps. Game looks and plays great.
I don't know anything about gameplay in EQ2 , but I know that if one likes a big open world with tons of sand box style gameplay....one should love playing Vanguard.
The performance issues have been..and continue to be ...greatly exaggerated. Lag and stutter are nearly non existant with 2 gb of ram or more. I seldom crash...maybe once or twice for every 20-50 hours online. I know many in my guild who complained about performance issues found out they actualy had numerous browser / malware issues that had nothing to do with the game or it's client.
I suspect ..especially early on...that those with the latest gear had less than desireable performance. It is my understanding that much of this has been fixed now. Those on Vista and running the latetest Gpu's are running on high quality with 40-80 fps now....based on some casual talking around I've done with friends playing the game.

No..I am not lying.
People quit for the smallest of issues in game. They are a product of the console...or instant gratification...generation.
Combine this with the over-hype and extremely high expectations not being met......this caused people to leave. Personaly ..I could care less. I'd be perfectly happy with just a a full server or two and that's it. Just one full server even is good enough for me.
No fair comparing it to EQ2 unless you are going to compare it to EQ2 6 months after release....or during it's launch. It is my understanding Eq2 had it's fair share of troubles early on as well and is only now just now starting to come around. Perhaps my perspective is different coming from 3 years of playing Horizons...a game so incomplete and buggy it makes VG look like a well oiled machine. Had I been brought into this world through the WoW pipeline perhaps I would have a different opinion...I was not however.
Mmo's take on a life of their own...evolving and changing much like a living creature would. I rather enjoy the process.
After playing SoR, WoW ( beta ), Horizons and Guild Wars....I have had no more trouble in VG than I had in those games during their launches....less trouble even with the exception of Horizons. My " core " guildmates share simular opinions as I. Even Guild Wars..a game that can run on my old Celeron 1.3 with 64mb Vram (shared)....I lag spike..hitch and stutter at times..even ctd and lock up on my amd 3500. Not often..but occasionaly ..which can be particularly annoying if one is 2 hrs into an instanced mission or busy with some rather intense pvp action. I get the same fps in Vanguard that I get in Horizons...AFTER 3+ years of developement. ( I use the term " developement " very generaly )
Vanguard is trying ...or was trying...to do new things with it's graphics engine. It is trying to push the envelope on what can be done online. Let me tell ya...it's no small task to make a persistant world the size of VG. That is why so many games choose to go with instancing and zones instead. Just to handle the AI of all the mobs in the entire game ..continously..nevermind any players actions...takes tons and tons of server power. They tried to combat this by breaking the world into chunks...lots and lots of chunks. Some issues are chunk related...the transition between chunks is still noticeable. It's as if they have a server for each chunk and the pause comes while the servers are xfering information as you cross a chunk. ( chunk crossings have been smoothed out alot btw..since launch ).

And it will stay this way. Chunks are nothing else but instanced zones. Once you cross a chunkborder data has to be loaded from hadrdrive into memory and client has to sync with the server. To be honest this is nothing new. EQ2 has those invisible zone borders since Desert of Flames. You run against a invisible wall and zone to the next instance. You can see in EQ2 what is beyond the border, exactly like in Vanguard. EQ2 displays a loading screen and Vanguard stands still for a moment. The biggest problem is that Vanguard wants to remove the loading time. While EQ2 displays a loading screen, unloads the old content, flushes memory and load the new content, Vanguard wants to save time. It seems they dont unload the old chunk and flush. They seem to try only updating the data. Good idea, the trees in this chunk are the same like in the next one. Same goes for the orcs and cockatrices. This seems to be the mayor issue with all the CDTs, unmounting and loosing pets. To save time they seem to have build in some asyncron memory flushing, which seems to be another big issue with CDTs. They will fix this for sure, but the short freeze when crossing a border will stay ingame for ever.

No, Thamoris is spot on. Performance is a complete non-issue for some. My performance is fine with a 3.6 ghz, 8800GTX, 2 gig ram, XP set up. I rarely crash, get good fps. I'm lucky, I think the slightly older rigs have less issues that the new set-ups. Vista has cause issues for some, dual video cards, duel-core processors etc.
However, many do have performance problems that have driven them to quit. And the frustrating part is it's hard to know what rigs are going to work well and which ones don't. We had a guild member that loved the game and bought a brand new high end rig so she could turn all the bells and whistles up. Well, she found instead that she had stuttering and crashing issues with the new rig... she was so pissed she quit.
So the technical issues vary, a lot. SoE has done quite a bit on the memory leak and crashing. Many fingers are crossed for the next CTD patch.
eq2 easily outshines vanguard. i tried vanguard even after watching these boards for months and hearing all the nay sayers...i guess i still had to see for myself. i played for about 3 weeks the reason i quit was performance its really horrid trust me. i can set my graphics to play fairly smooth out in the wild however any time i tried to go to a city or large structure with multiple npcs/mobs the frame rates would just go into the single digits and the game would be unplayable.
sure i could turn the graphics to the lowest setting so when i enter a city it would stay smooth but the graphics are flat out pathetic on the lower settings i shouldn't have to turn the graphics back 10 years in order to play the game. i hope sony can get the game optimized for those who enjoy playing it but, i would recommend to anyone to just wait on the trial 1st.
I'm a former VG player, and labeled a hater by some. While it is true that I feel it necessary to counteract the unbridled optimism of folks like Thamoris, quite truthfully I think you should break the seal and give it a trial. It could not have cost you more than 40.00 (US) by now so what are you really risking.
Some people really like the game, you might be one of them, but unless you give it a try you'll never know. I would wait until the server merges are complete though....just so you're not stuck with unnecessary downtime.

I really enjoyed Vanguard in beta and the first couple months of retail. The biggest reason I dont play now is because of the low populations, especially during my play times (after 10PM PDT), made it impossible to find a group. Unfortunately there didnt seem to be a big selection of Australian gamers (which are in my playtime) to group with. If there were a server that had a large population I would probably start playing again but I sure wasnt able to find one on any of the servers back then. The bugs and graphical glitches never really bothered me as most of them didnt make gameplay impossible or really take away the fun of the game at all.

Play EQ 2. Choose a good server (Antonin Bayle) and just have fun with it.
Boycott EA Games. RIP Sim City.
