I've seen the combat, and it did not strike me as clumsy or difficult as the article portrays it. I think it's just such a new and innovative concept, that people haven't had a chance to get used to yet.
I remember seeing the Nintendo 64 controller and thinking how much more challenging it was going to be to play games with that much control. Of course, I learned, and I loved it.
I also intend to play AoC using an X-Box 360 controller, so I think that will remove some of this "left-hand does this, right hand does that" stuff.
In either case, I'll wait for the open beta before I make my judgements. Though I suspect that there will be people who love the new system and people who hate it.
I just read the bit about melee combat and I bet the person who wrote it has tried some sort of early demo/beta thingie where you can't change much.. I'd be very surprised if you can't change your key setup so as to do only the Q and E-attacks on the keyboard and switch 1,2 and 3 to Left mousebutten, Scroll-button and Right mouse-button.. At least that setup would make sense to me.
But it's very hard to say anything before it's released in my opinion, and this article didn't change my mind about trying this game out, that's for sure.
Yah, bottom line is that i'm waiting for the open beta (if I don't get into a closed one ) to really decide. It just suprised me at how much of a train wreck the author of that article portrayed the melee controls.

I wouldn't say "train wreck" as much as I would say "different and challenging". I'm sure the end result won't be as difficult as this person made it out to be.
That's the thing that people who are used to the MMO genre have to get used to. I've seen several comments in different reviews that allude to the fact that the controls felt clumsy at first, yet I've seen other ones that said they felt comfortable with it after a little bit.
It'll just take some getting used to, I suspect. I wont feel much in the way of concern about it, until after I've had some time with it, and see how I adapt myself.
"... there's no dynamic blocking or parrying in the game. ..."
"... You can also jump around to get a higher evade chance."
i'm disappointed. was expecting more. auto-attack is bad, but auto-defense is not? well, it might be small jump, err... step in right direction, i guess.

Actually, from the sound of it, the problem appears to have been caused by the fellow forgetting that the interface is customizable. His main complaint about the awkwardness was in the way the controlls were set.

I was very disappointed in this article. The writer refers to clicking on the attacks to perform combos and how it doesn't work. Which while you can do that was not the way we recommended people to play and is why we kept telling people to do W,A,S,D for movement, right hand on the mouse with mouselook on and use Q,1,2,3,E for their attacks. We did not pick this control scheme randomly, so the guy was sort of ruining his own experience then posting it was difficult.

That's exactly how he said he played right here. He's not saying he clicked the attacks. He's saying he used his left hand to do movement and attacks which means he had to have been using Q,1,2,3,E.:
"This in large part is down to the control system, which finds your left hand used for both movement, attacking and combo execution while the right with the left mouse button depresses is used to rotate the character and look up and down."
Here he's saying that he used his left hand for movement (WASD) and used the Q,1,2,3,E for attacks, and used his Right hand for Mouse Look. It sounds like he was playing it exactly as you're saying you tell people to play.
I could see how this would be un-intuitive since you're having to walk, and attack with the same hand. 9 keys to concentrate on with one hand is something you'd just have to get used to. It's not something that would be intuitive and easy to pick up.

One thing that pisses me off about MMO's that I've tried or played for awhile is the basic bar line that uses 1234567890-= ok how in the world will anyone be able to hit anything past 6 with their hand on wasd for movement? That's why with WoW or EQ2 ill use the mouse to move and zxcvasdfqwer1234 spacebar and +shift, +alt for spell or attacks. Do the people that make these games actually test their own game? Or do they feel that if people stray from this wasd movement that it will affect the popularity of their game and make people stray away from it since wasd is so widely used in many pc games?
Thats why most mmo players rebind Q and E to some of the higher numbers.
You move in your attacks, so you dont need to be pressing W,A,S,D while in the middle of a swing. All I can speak from is my experience, now having been on hand when more than 20 members of the press have tried the game hands on for the first time, and while at times awkward at first all of them have said they see the potential and thought the setup was actually pretty good once you got used to it. I just don't think the guy was very interested in paying attention to the game anyway with the line "who cares about Conan" as one of his opening statements.

What are you talking about? ( WAR maybe?)
i was expecting player controlled blocks, parries and dodges. player-skill vs player-skill, not vs preset defense values.
i just tried mount&blade, and was really impressed by the game. if AoC gameplay goes above and beyond what M&B has, i will consider it a success.
