For me its Rome Total War, I love the Roman days...the graphics aren't good, but a nice selection of mods to choose from to boost gameplay.
Medieval 2 Total War is okay...but the biggest problem for me was the cannons/gun men, its too modern and when I play rts games I prefer to fight with swords/bows/cavalry...not cannons or gun men. Also, since its new there isn't many mods to choose from like RTW.
I haven't played any other TW game, so I can't say about the others. Actually, when I played the demo a few years ago I thought it was really lame because all the demo showed was skirmishes, so I thought thats what the game was about. Little did I know that there was a civilization style map and there was actually a lot of strategy involved.
Anyways, here is a poll...feel free to reply why you like that Total War game you chose.

I don't own, nor have I played medieval 2, so I can only talk about Medieval, and Rome...Rome is a great game, the capaign is much more fun and deep than the campaign in medieval...that said, I do prefer the unit types in Medieval, though it has nothing to do with a more "modern" feel. Actually, it's funny that you should say that about medieval having cannons and guns, because Rome did in fact have cannons...they were just called something else. As for guns, it's all historically accurate, guns did not become available until much later in the medieval campaign, so it's not like you were bringing M-16's to a sword fight.

What kind of "cannon" type thing does RTW have? I know they have elephants, but I didn't hear about cannons or anything.

Being a huge history buff, Medieval 1 and 2 both got on my nerves a little bit. The historical accuracy is fine, I just can't get my mind around the idea of a kingdom like France or Spain conquering Europe in the 12th century.
Rome and Shogun don't suffer from this problem in my mind, so I like them better. That said, Medieval 2: Total War is a great game, despite some of the bugs (which I would hope they've fixed with patches by now, but I have no idea).
My favorite will always be Shogun.

Life sucks, buy a helmet.
I don't remember the point at which you can actually build the cannons ( I think they are referred to as Caravels in the game) I've played through and beaten the campaign several times, only as romans though, the closest I've gotten to beating the campaign with a non roman faction was with the selucid (sp?) empire...at least I think that was the empire, I got about half way through and then gave up on fighting the romans, they were just so freaking hard to beat without using completely overwhelming numbers. Though I am very partial to the way the german faction fights. Putting all of my men in a phalanxe formation in a giant square then moving along watching my archers kill everything from a distance is always fun ..of course, doing this completely eliminates the possibility of auto resolving your conflicts, as the computer can't replicate your battle tactics.

Playing Medieval 2 right now. The bugs are pretty annoying. Spent the last two hours crashing everytime I kill the enemy general.
Good game when it's not screwing up on me.
I still play Rome:Total War without the expansion. I was really looking forward to Medieval 2 but after I got it I thought it was bunk.
In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.
I have the expansion for Rome, I just can't seem to get into it though, I prefer the origional game as well.

only ever played shogun and medieval 2, but shogun was definitely fun, although the actual real time battles were, well dated, the campaign was complete awesome sauce.
medieval 2 is definitely good, I've spent a lot of hours on it, but it comes and goes, some weeks I play for hours on end, other weeks I can't stand the sight of it.
AND I STILL CAN'T GET PATCH 1.2 TO WORK, .... i spazz, spent like 3 straight days (off) tryin to get it to work...
but i still can't wait for expansion to medieval 2, which is kingdoms, looks awesome with the 4 new campaigns
?played: Nearly everything.
?waiting: *Darkfall*, Hero''s Journey
I hope there'll be a Shogun II someday. I've been playing Total War and every expansion since Shogun first came out. I think of all of them, I've played Shogun the most (more than a year, really) and Rome: Total War 'wowed' me the most, especially since I'm a really big fan of ancient Rome.
That said, I like all of them. I'm currently enjoying myself with Medieval II, I really like it, it's just a shame that you aren't able to give titles to peasants and stuff anymore.
I think I liked the original Medieval least, however it was still head and shoulders above most other games.
I have loved for the longest time, Rome:Total War. Sadly, it is the only Total War series game I have played. I do love the "Total Realism" mod and haven't played with anything but that since it came out. I don't even remember how the original game played.
Edit: many times I have picked up the box for Medieval 2, but have not gone through with purchasing since when I play a strategy game it is usually Rome. Maybe in a month or two I will get Medieval 2.
my favorite is Medieval 2, i got the DLV mod on it right now, it adds the irish and flaandars faction, and ive always been a fan of the irish! But its still really bugged ATM. Without the bugs its pretty kool. Flaandars is so much funner then ireland though, prolly cause their on the mainland.

Not to necropost, but I just got Medievil 2 and wanted to comment. As far as the campaign is concerned, Medieval 2 is better, mostly because it is much more refined and slightly more "complicated" than Rome. When it comes to combat, Rome is better.
I've never played MTW2, but I do own all the others. They're all great games, Medieval was good in it's time and Rome was better, with the exception of the AI, which is fairly terrible in Rome.
Well, I have never played Medieval Total War, but I remember that Rome drained my life more than any game I've ever played; So I'm going to have to say Rome Total War.
I still love Shogun the best. I think it's because it was so simple and streamlined. While I enjoy all the games, the later ones get to the point where you can feel overwhelmed by the huge amount of territories, buildings, etc.
Still, Medieval II allows me to play as the Holy Roman Empire, and get Landsknechts, who are pretty much my favorite military force in history. Although I hate the way they're implemented, they don't really fight in a long line...meh, I'm ranting.
I dislike when they put in imaginary units. How about the Arcanii from Rome. Arcanii, excuse me? Take an organization referenced a few times in history and turn it into an elite commando Roman unit? Meh. Also the fighting Gladiators really irked me.
It was terrible in Medieval...all you had to do to win ANY battle was put a few longbowmen (or whatever archers you have) on a corner on a hill, and then sorround them with some good defensive troops and the enemy army would go back and forth and never actually charge in to attack while getting owned by arrows...of course this worked best when ammo was put on unlimited.

rome total war has spartans enuff said!
I vote for shogan as it was my first that introduced me to this great franchise.
"Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god."
-- Jean Rostand
Have you ever tried beating that game with the Greeks? I vote that it's impossible on anything other than the easiest difficulty setting...fighting the romans right away before I can even get a good army and economy going? no thanks!

Maybe I'm getting my history mixed up, but wasn't Sherman the first to instigate the idea of "total war"? Don't make fun of me if I'm wrong, just point it out to me and I'll be on my way. hehe.
Anyways, my point is, if Sherman came up with the idea of total war, then how could you have historic "Rome: Total War"?
