So many classes...What to choose!?

ToladinToladin Member Posts: 94

Hey there, I am hoping to get a little advice on which class might be appropriate for my play type!

I usually play meele characters, and have fun both with offensive and defensive types.  I usually like to play hybrids, so I have some magic ability to either help with damage or healing.  right now I am looking at Paladin, Zerker, Monk, Bruiser, Shadowknight or Ranger.

I was hoping maybe someone could give a little more information that the EQ2 official page gives about these classes... I don't care about faction, and would be happy on both sides.  Is there one of these classes that is over or underplayed? which would be in the highest demand?

Thanks for any feedback!

All of the classes you have mentioned seem to have a rather healthy player population, wich means none of them is in a particulary high demand as opposed to the others.
If you want a meele hybrid that can cast spells and do both ranged and meele attacks with group utility that is in high demand you might consider a dirge, as bards are one of the rarest classes around along with enchanters and shamans.
As for the classes you mentioned here is a quick breakdown:
Ranger- heavy dps-er, not much group utility, good for soloing providing you have space for kiting and executing ranged attacks. This class begins to shine around level 30, as by that time you get more ranged then meele attacks.

Paladin/Shadowknight- A hybrid between a tank and a healer (sort of). Medium to low dps, ok self heals, some utility, can tank and actually hold agro (much better then monks/bruisers), all in all a well rounded class that is nice to solo with, but in a particulary high demand in end game raiding community.

Monk/bruiser- Avoidance tank, very low mitigation due to leather armor but very high avoidance due to class and dexterity. Meaning you wont get hit often but when you do you get splattered :)
Has a self heal, Feign death and other nice tricks for soloing. Do not tank particulary well as they can have problems with reciving high spike damage and holding agro. Ok medium to high dps, but same as paladins Sks the demand for them in end game is not that high.

Zerkers- basically your tank that trades some of his tanking abilities for a higher dps output. Can tank, and do dps depending on the gear and AA spec. No particular utility- but who needs it if you are a tank and all the groups want you anyway. Same as the other Warrior classes, there seems to be plenty of them at high levels so there is no high demend for them at end game.

    Hope this helps.

PS. Wardens and Mystics can both use their AAs to spec heavily into meele. thus becoming Melee/healer hybrids as well.

PPS. Just beacuse classes are not in a particulary high demand in end game, doesnt mean you wont find a good group/raid group to play with. It just means that when you ding 70 you wont have 3000 tells asking you to join their guild (as that is the situation with defilers and coercers) :D

Thank you for the very thourogh reply!

I haven't really considered another type of class, but the Dirge or Mystic actually sounds kind of fun... maybe a change of pace for a new game is just what I need...

It sounds like the mystic is a shamanistic class.. I assume they get buffs/heals/debuffs things like that?  Do they get pets?  I think I remember shamans getting a pet in EQ1.  Anyways, thanks again for the response, I will continue to do some research before I actually buy the game on each of the classes!

Yes Mystics get a pet wolf, allthough it isnt all that much to brag about as it is very fragile :) They also have a very special form of healing that isnt healing per se- they put up wards preventing damage taking in the first place. They tend to solo rather slowly due to low dps potential (you dont die easy but you dont kill easy either).
The thing is, the most wanted classes are the ones that are most difficult to solo with (or to put it better those that are most difficult to learn how to play properly-take enchanters for example- they are probably the most powerfull soloers in the game but unlike random skill bashing as with the more popular classes, you actually have to time and execute your spells in a very precise and thought out manner or you are dead).
My suggestion is to try out a few classes until level 16-17 or so to get a feeling for the one that suits your playstyle the best.
    Have fun.

Fighters of any kind aren't really in demand. The game has pretty much hit saturation level for fighters.

The rest are usuall in demand though.

Coercers are in demand alot, aswell as Dirges and Troubadors or any of the Priests.

If you want a fun melee can't go wrong with Swashbucklers or Brigands... Can solo well, easy to get a group and raid guilds will love you.

You don't really want to start a Ranger for a first character, they cost a small fortune in good arrows.

So I created a Fury and a Dirge on Crushbone... Any new players want to join up with me and show me around!?  I am around level 10 with both, and having a great time just exploring all the zones... this game is HUGE.  I will probably roll a few more classes to find one I really like, but both Fury and Dirge have been cool so far.   Neither seem to be great at Solo'ing, but have good group buffs and heals or attack spells.

    See you in Crushbone!

    -Rowens the Fury

    -Jaxen the Dirge
