AMD/ATI is in Trouble with a capital T!
All of their recent products have had release dates that have been pushed back and have underperformed compared to expectations.
Barcelona is underperforming and ATI is lieing about it.
Now, I see article after article on how barcelona is not ramping up to advertised clockrates. How long will they push back the release date for barcelona? Will we have to wait an extra 6 months like the 2900? Will they be able to debug the logic so that it is a complete chip? Or will they have to chop out entire pieces of circuitry just to get it to work like the 2900?
We really need AMD/ATI to be competative, otherwise intel and nvidia will only release products when they need to. Immagine what would happen if AMD/ATI went under. intel and nvidia would have no competition? We would see less innovation and higher prices. =( Then eventually Intel would make nvidia obsolete with gpu and physics cores built into the CPU.
Something needs to happen soon otherwise the consumer computer market is going to drastically change.

If you want my opinion, that was expected.
AMD is trying to blend the 2 business, to save research and production costs.
By doing so, each business is slowing each other down every time there is a setback in any of the business.
ATi was cutting edge because everything was done thinking about Nvidia.
AMD needs to win first the war on Processors against Intel, before dedicating more resources to ATi.
I am afraid, but on the horizon I ll see the disappearence of the ATi brand all together and an AMD Graphic Card taking its place.
Obviously an AMD Graphic card will be based mainly on their processors with all the pro and cons, but we ll never see a fully focused graphic card research and developement, like it was with ATi.
I hope I am wrong, because I always owned ATi cards
Ill put it to you this way, the new AMD processors comming out, coupled with an AMD chipset board, with ATi graphics will beat out an Intel/Intel/nVidia or Intel/nvidia/nvidia system in stability.
AMD is aiming for universal cooperation and unification from all components of a system. Think 3 "parts"(processor, chipset, graphics card) as 1 "brain", instead of 3 different "parts" with 2 (nvidia/intel) different "brains" like it is now.
AMD's Fusion processor will be the first of this, which is slated to come out late 2008 early 2009, its the CPU and GPU fused together in 1 chip. Todays GPUs are literally hundreds of times more powerful than todays and tomorrows CPU's, so AMD is attempting to tap into that power, by fusing it with the CPU and making them 1. With AMD's new processors having 2MB+ L3 cache (the first with this), and solid state harddrives, this will eventually eliminate the use for video ram, and system ram, which will in turn make motherboards much smaller because less parts are needed.
I really dont like AMD, but their research has been nice over the past year or so. And I havnt seen anything like this from Intel, except maybe that Turbo Memory thing they have slated, which has been pushed back again.

The barcy isnt done yet, and there is no hard bench marks out yet. All thats out are bench marks that came from AMD from a still very under-developed barcelona clocked very low because again barcelona is not finished, and it showed it being slightly less powerful than the 3.0Ghz Quad Xeon. Okay, now people are bashing AMD because of this. But, lets not forget a few things.
1. The bench was ran with an AMD chipset/mobo (AMD never made good chipsets)
2. The Barcelona is still not finished
3. it is a native quad-core, so on many other things it will be performing better
4. Cost efficientcy, the 3.0Ghz Quad Xeon is $1,500.00, while the 2.0Ghz Barcelona, that is slightly (slightly!) less powerful than the Quad Xeon will be going for $320.00 Hmmmmmmm whats a better deal???
5. It has an onboard memory controller
6. Power efficient. The barcy takes 68w a chip, which is 17watts per core, which is incredible!
With all of these things the Barcelona will definately not fail.
Yea. Great respond. I generally hate when people that doom a product before it's in it's final state.
Plus, people are reporting that the new ATI drivers make the Radeon HD x2900XT rival the 8800GTX
Yep, I have the 2900XT. The June 25th drivers are better than previous drivers by leaps and bounds. They fixed the temperature issues, fan control actually works now, FPS is up slightly as well. With the origional drivers the 8800GTS beat this card in the face, with the new drivers, this card shoots the 8800GTS in the chest twice, and is currently in a knife duel with the 8800GTX.

Its not in the same league as nvidia and ati graphics, it dosent even target the same customer, nor does it have mass appeal or regard, and its dirt cheap to make and sells for dirt cheap prices, which means Intel isnt making a sliver of profit compared to AMD and Nvidia. Out of that 50+% that Intel controls, about 49% of that is in laptops, which generally arent made/used/bought for gaming outside of the little 1% Alienware/XPS owners. Im telling you its irrelevant.
Anyways, AMD might go bankrupt at the end of the year? Yea, thats why they have research and chips mapped out up till 2011, and have their big guns comming out in Q4 and Q1. If every company gave up the ghost at the sight of profit loss, we would be in the stone age.
