I played daoc for over 4 years. I know exactly how mythic runs, more particularly the senior dev team which is tasked with Warhammer right now. and in all honesty, mythic does not deserve another chance. Anyone that got over rr5 in daoc and has at least half a brain would agree on that.
Then why do you think that FunCom deserves a second chance? Anarchy isn't exactly a fan favorite either, nor is it anything revolutionary, or for that matter, good.
Not revolutionary? Do you realize that a very large portion of the game mechanics you use in modern games since then were CREATED by Funcom? Instancing being just one?
As far as being good, we all have our own taste, and AO is ahead of the game as far as diversification and gameplay are concerned compared to the majority of the "Kill ten rats and come back" so-called "good" games, like WoW for example.
Warhammer games have always been kind of ignored in the past... they have their popularity from tabletop gaming. I just look at their past and all I can say is I'm not ready to beleive WAR will be a good game when there really hasn't been a good video game based on the Warhammer license. Funcom had Anarchy Online, which was truthfully a great MMO, it wasn't hugely popular but it gave them the experience. I have faith AoC will be a good game like AO was, and I think more people are interested this time around.
Anarchy Online took a long long time before it could even be concerned 'decent'. With the exception of Vanguard, it was the most horrible mmorpg launch I have ever been a part of. Many feature promises were not met, core game functionality was severely bugged, many issues known during beta were never addressed for years after release. Community relationship was horrible and there were many compaints about their customer service. Its only the last 4-5 years that they have managed to pick themselves up.
I have my doubts whether many of the people that think funcom is a great developer were around when AO first came out. Its hard for me to justify the die-hard, eyes-closed, fingers in your ears fanaticism I see every day for funcom having seen how the company handled themselves in the past. But maybe its just the new generation of gamer coming in with a clean experience slate and getting wowed by the pretty graphics.
Nope, alot of us played in beta and up 'til the present. The fact of how Funcom was able to turn the bad launch around, maintain a game different than 90% of the rest, and listen to their community and implement things the community asked for, is why AO is still here and why I support Funcom 100%. Yep, they've made some bonehead moves (just like every other developer), but they are also one of the few I've seen admit it while doing whatever they can to rectify situations the community was unhappy with.
Okay, help me out there because I'm obviously not understanding, and I'd really like to. From watching the podcast "battlefronts" I took from that that "there are systems in place that will prevent one side from holding a capital city indefinitely, and eventually it will be returned to it's owner, thus restarting the battle." I understand it does not reset the 1-4 battlefronts, but arent we kind of talking semantics here? It doesnt just reset, but the mechanics in place make it impossible to hold. Isnt that really the same thing when you boil it down? If I'm understanding that correctly, (and I may not be, which is why I'm asking) that spells if not meaningless, then less meaning to me than the GvG style conflict where you hold a keep until it's physically taken from you.
As far as the AoC combat style, I'm enthused simply because I'm tired of whack-a-mole, where I just hit buttons and see what happens, as opposed to actively try to attack an opponents weakpoint. It's worked well in other style games, so I'd wager the system works, I'm just waiting to see how it all applies in an MMO, because I'm just not sure how it'll work. Either or, thanks for the civilized conversation. It's good to discss both, and still have some respect for each others taste in games. Gives us both some perspective, and a chance to ask some questions and learn a bit about the other game. Cheers!
Well, I'll try to give an example to how WARs System will probably work (Subject to change and all that, as it's probably one of the most important systems in Place at WAR, and I might misunderstand some Dev Posts):
Let's say Destruction conquers the Capitol of the Dwarfs (Empire and High Elves tried to help them, but even the combined forces couldn't manage to defend the city).
Then Destruction can rampage in their City at will, maybe capture the King, or kill the Duke or whoever might be commanding the city at the moment (this seems to change, based on which time you conquered it, or randomly, it's to make every raid feel different), "steal" special Crafting Goods (which the other side will not lose, since the Players never had them in the first Place. An Example the Devs gave is that a Blacksmith Dwarf with a Mule, packed with all the best Ores in the Game stands in the city. YOu can kill the Dwarf, capture the Mule, and have to escort him back to your capitol, all the way through the Zones. During that, everyone can see your Dot on the Map, so Order Players could set up a taskforce and try to retake the ores, or concentrate all their forces to retake the city, and so on) and so on and so forth. A small spawn Zone in the Capitol, with a Bank NPC, the Quick Travel NPC, a Repair NPC and such important things will always remain un-attackable and in control of the Defenders though. For some time, no Force will be buffed.
However, let's say after 3 hours, when Order didn't manage to retake the City yet, all Order Chars in that Capitol gain a slight over-all Buff or something (maybe Class-specific Buffs, Tanks take less damage, other do more, or the other-way around, nothing specific said yet), to help them retake the city. This Buff is then stacked another time after every hour or so. So yeah, while theoretically, one single Order char could (after a week of AFKing in the Capitol or whatever) probably one-hit-kill every Aggressor in there, but that's very unlikely to happen ^_^ It still is in the Hands of the Defender Players to retake their city through Teamwork, Tactics and Skill, the Buff is there to prevent frustration if the Attackers manage to hold the Capitol for days on end. Also remember: The Entrance to the Capitol is gained by winning consequently in many balanced Scenarios, done by many Players, but the real Attack of the City is in the Open World, and will probably feature a huge war (250vs.250 Players are sort of "planned" by Mythic), so if the sides are very imbalanced, the Defenders might constantly face a 2on1 situation against them, the Buff gives them the Chance to put up a decent fight after some time nonetheless.
WHEN the Defenders managed to drive the Attackers out of the Capitol again, THEN all Zones reset, including the lower Tier Zones, so basically this battlefield completely resets (not the other 2 though). It's not meaningless because of that, though, since the Attackers will have gained some of the best Loot in the Game, cool Trophies and so on.
Oh and by the way: Do you know Guild Wars? The combat in WAR seems to be like a combination of Guild Wars and WoW. You have much HP, which doesn't regenerate too fast during battle (unless you are healed of course), but you have 100 "Action Points" instead of Mana. Think of it like the WoW Rogues Energy, recovers extremely fast, but is capped at 100 (certain buffs can increase it by 20 or so, though). So it seems that you have to actually think what skill is the most useful at any given moment, since you can't spam all of your skills at once (ala WoW), which hopefully offers a very dynamic and strategy-intensive Fight, instead of "SPam until your Mana is empty" ala WoW ^_^
Hehe, for everyone's sanity, I wont quote all that!
All I can say is thanks for filling me in on the details, it definitely clears up what I'd pieced together.
Now, we're down to the "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" part. From my point of view, it seems like that mechanism is designed to eventually take things back to square one. It's going to give players the first shot at doing it, but if they cant over whatever period of time, then the game essentially does it for them so that the fighting can resume again. For someone who's picking up the game 3 months after release, I think that's a good thing for RvR, but, like I said, to me I'm not seeing any chance of permanence to it. No matter what my group does, eventually things get reset, either by the opponent outfighting us, or by the game buffing them to the point of invulnerability.
That's ultimately not my cup of tea. I prefer the ability to hold something once earned. Be it thru alliance, or continued fights to push away attackers, while reaping the benefits of holding that area. Of course depending on how that all works out, it could lead to some imbalances I'll admit.
Either or, it's that whole "play what you enjoy" style. Some of my closest friends were die-hard DAoC'ers, so they are just chomping at the bit for WAR. Since I want to play with 'em, I'm sure I'll give it a whack, and because of the people I play with, I think, and hope that'll be enjoyable. That being said, I'm of the mind for now, that AoC is offering the style that I'm lookin' for, for me. I'll try to keep my friends who try it here though!
I just hope both games do something positive for the genre, and expand the player base. It really oughta be a win/win situation, and I cant see why people would not want that. If both games kick some tushie, more money opens up for future MMO projects, more niches get a game that meets their needs, and more developers push the envelope in order to move the genre in new directions. That's the ultimate win for any gaming fan....at least that's my take on it.
Mythic and Funcom are polar opposites. Funcom had a horrible launch, but then greatly improved and built up the game. Mythic had an outstanding launch with Daoc, but then after about a year started ruining the game bit by bit with every patch. Funcom created it's own ideas and was very innovative, like the old instancing example. Mythic let others do the thinking for them, and took any idea that worked well in another game, like instancing from AO, sidekicking in City of Heroes, the list goes on. While these 2 in particular were good additions, mythic just did not put in the effort. With every new expansion, less and less content was added and they felt they needed to charge you for 2 weeks of programming that went into it. Not long after the first expansion, mythic began to shift the way balancing in pvp was handled in order to benefit the realm that they had played. I'm not going to get into that whole story. In short though, Funcom made a mistake, learned from it and constantly improved. Mythic had a good start, got cocky and ruined a great game.
It's just like rival sports teams and their fans. The fans will always bad mouth the otherside. Doesn't matter if they're team is better or worse... just makes them feel good to stir up the hornets nest.
No proof or evidence to back up your claim, no links, no comment.
Your post is childish and stupid.
A: define "proof" on the internet?
Define evidence?
B: Links? to what? Page after page of people misconstruing dev posts, lying, flaming for no good reason, and rampantly negative biased posts? Why link what is right here for you viewing?
C: No comment? I'm pretty sure the OP can be defined as a comment...
Your flame was childish and ill concieved and ironically provides evidence of haters hating.

Hey AmazingAvery, maybe before posting the crap you do, realize that that one guy was just posting his opinion. You don't have to go all out in a fanboi seizure, posting 20 pages of AoC promotional bull****. We all know you're AoC's #1 pre-game customer. I'm looking forward to AoC too, but you need to chill it and stop acting like an ass.

Mythic made DAoC. Its still in the top MMO's! After 7 years! Is that not enough? And what about the Warhammer 40k games? Have you ever tried them? Why are you saying that without any evidence to back it up?

Difference between us is I wouldn't call it crap, I would say its informative.
i don't think threatened is the right word nor is it just aoc. i plan to play war but i also plan to try aoc i might like it if so i'll play both. i don't understand why if you're gonna play war you HAVE to hate aoc and vice versa...or if you play lotro you have to hate wow it doesn't make sense really... i mean we're all gamers why would you only want one good game shit i wish there was 40 mmos and they all kicked ass and i flipped - flopped weekly on which one i wanted to play.
I plan on playing both games. But for the love of god can some of the AOC fans anwser me three things. 1. How many of your guild mates are in AOC beta. 2. Wheres the links to AOC PVP, TEAM PVP. REAL people not a demo by some dev videos. 3. Is it true that more everyday folks the average JOE has played a version of WAR than AOC? If Funcom loves the community soooo Much than why wont they even let the Community(average Joe SMoe Gamer) even touch thier game?
A: he cannot answer 1/2/3 without breaking NDA genius
B: Cause its still in closed beta!

B: And SO is WAR: yet still more non beta( north american/euro ) community has had hands on time with the game.
I am not a fanboi of any game, but I still don't have much faith in AoC. Been hearing rumors that their much hyped combat system is not working out "quite as expected".
Actually it is working, it was working back in 2006 (before that i dont really know) if it wasnt they wouldnt be showing the combat system off at different game convensions (E3 for example), becuase if they did with it buggy less people would buy the game and they know that... you can go to youtube.com and see videos of the combat system working flawlessly, my only concern is if its gonna lag, even on high end computers, it doesnt lag on the videos but thats not when thousands upon thousands of people are logged onto a server, this is something that hasnt been done before so there is no real way of knowing how lag will affect it (im not real concerned because i have a high end PC but it may affect people with older PC's (everyone if there is major server lag) and that isnt good for teh community of the game), but they will see if that is a factor during stress tests and if it is a problem it will probably be fixed (not saying it will because look at vanguard lmao.)

Yet AO was quickly religated to FTP status not exactly encouraging to Veteran MMO players is it?
So you are basically saying that the current developer for WAR is the same as the ones who made the past games. If it is true then i can see where you are going here and can follow your Fanboi logic here.
But fact is i know for a fact those othere SINGLE player games were made by other developer companies. And besides Warhammer - Mark of chaos was a very good game, that actually worked out nicely.

ERRM when he says not working as expected he means the mechanics of it not the annimation. Origonally it was promised that it wouldnt be a button masher but would be a true FPS style combat game where you could aim for bodyparts ets now tho we have something very close to a button masher now with random aiming based on the attack buttons you press.
There are some asses who just like to try and go around bashing games for the same reasons little sadists burn ants with a magnifying glass, it makes them feel important and big.
(Sorry can't resist)
Lol just like you on the Dark and Light forum (and this was before anyone had any proof that the game was going to turn out as badly as it did). Didn't you get a temp ban for trolling?

I had plenty of proof that game was a rip off by Farlan a good six months before it released SoG. I had a a friend who was in beta give me her key after she became disgusted with that pile of shit because I did not believe it was as bad as she said it was. It was worse, and I felt really bad for the fanswhen I was seeing all the BS being posted on the boards by the Devs.
There were more than a few beta testers who said screw the NDA and tried to save some people money in that train wreck, charade, ripoff. However a lot of people chose to believe the hype machine of Farlan and got really screwed badly. I don't break NDAs as a habit but sometimes you gotta do what your conscience dictates you gotta do. D& L and Mourning were such obvious ripoffs they did not deserve to have their NDA's honored.
Thinking back the only ban I got from Dark and Light was for derailing a thread a day or so after SOG released. Enigma was the one who banned me if I remember correctly. I scoffed at some post where some kid just knew the Devs were going to fix that game and it would be game of the year.
I did manage to get 2 bans from Vanguard after it went to open beta and released cause I pissed off a McQuaid fan mod here though LOL.

Ahh i see, *looks at SWG* i could see a repeat of a major mistake SOE made witht he NGE in SWG... the animations would eb to long and attack speed would be very hard to concider in a full FPS style MMO... a sword swing needs to take a certain amount of time or it wont look good and animations will start skipping, llike lightsabers in SWG... I didnt take that into concideration, and now that i think about it a full FPS style MMO where you can choose which limb to chop off might not happen ffor a while, so it was suppost to be fighting like the jedi knight games but with better control of the sword, i could definatly see how the mechanics could be difficult to get working... I do think that the comabt system still looks amazing, nothing like ive ever seen in any other MMO's, and even if it stays this way i think there will need to be a certain amount of skill to play, not just a bunch of random button mashing like in WoW. I am definatly looking forward to this game lol, even moreso now because i wanna see what happens with the combat system.
"fanboi", exactly like the term "n00b", is nothing but a generic catch-all that ignorant, uninformed and unintelligent forum trolls use when they can not intelligently retort in an otherwise fact based discussion.
Anytime some says a certain game is going to be better than another, they get labelled as a fanboi of that game. During most discussions on these forums, it seems, one person in a discussion will run out of intelligent responses and start screaming "fanboi". Exactly like the term "n00b" is used in MMOs.
Now, as far as the subject goes, I think AoC has potential to be a great game. I also think WAR has the same potential. I lean more toward WAR only because Ihave played DAoC for 5 years and I know, Mythic, can make a stable game. But, when you compare them side by side, they will be alot alike. From what I have seen. Different combat system, potentially. Different graphics. The rest seems pretty similar to me. Keep sieging being the big seller for both. Only WAR will be huge realm vs realm battles and AoC will have much smaller guild vs guild battles.

Lol whatever you say my little sadist
Anyway your trolling skills (epic thou they are) are far off topic, so subject closed back to topic.

Your post is childish and stupid.
A: define "proof" on the internet?
B: Links?

I'm thinking that what they are really worried about is AOC being such a big hit that WAR is doomed before it even releases.
Flip your stament on its head, this is a two way street
B: Cause its still in closed beta!

A: 1,2,3 can be answered About WAR without breaking the NDA
B: And SO is WAR: yet still more non beta( north american/euro ) community has had hands on time with the game.
DEE-DEE-DEE see you on the yellow bus

I miss DAoC

Fanboi=n00b

Anyway your trolling skills (epic thou they are) are far off topic, so subject closed back to topic.
