Brand New Player: VG Factions?

TalynTalyn Member UncommonPosts: 587

I have perhaps 5 hours in-game and 6 levels, so that's how new I am to VG. Just wondering how factions (or whatever VG calls them) work? In SWG you choose Rebel Alliance or Empire. In WoW you choose Alliance or Horde. In VG I simply roll a character with no faction descriptions whatsoever. I have a level 6 Vulmane druid. Is he supposed to be evil? Good? Neither? Does everyone start off the same and eventually define their factions based on what quests (or diplomacy) they do?

    You uh...

Well Vanguard is a little lacking on the lore end of things. It definitely has no mechanics supporting any lore, 'least nothing akin to other MMOs faction splits.

What Vanguard does have is your typical MMO faction standings: http://wiki.silkyvenom.com/index.php/Faction

You can reference that link to see what your character will have to improve standings with to access different cities and outposts in the world. Other than that, there's nothing.

Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.

Do the initial diplomatic quests, around your starter area, and you can find out about your lore for the Vulmane. Unless ofcourse vulmane have different type of diplomtic starter quests than I have seen so far.

2 examples on 2 different factions and kill on sight.

    1. A supposedly 'good' place and faction.

    Bordinar's Cleft

    Dwarf

Goblin, Orc, Dark Elf, Gnome, Varanthari, Lesser Giant, Varanjar, Vulmane

    2. A supposedly 'evil' place and faction.

    Dahknarg

    Vulmane

Half-Elf, Wood Elf, Gnome, High Elf

Looking at gnome one can see that there is not a perfect line between 2 sides/2 factions, you actually have more intriguing factions than that.

    o Lore and Quests

§ The back story is complete and basic quest and diplomacy planning exists.

Don't know if that means the lore also will be more appearant then it is now.

Lore is just background stories, and VG has an entire gameplay sphere dedicated to it.

    It's called Diplomacy.

The other mechanic in place to get lore is called literacy.  You read the quests.  VG doesn't enforce this mechanic; so it's totally optional to do.  A lot of people find this sort of gameplay boring and tend not to participate in it though, but trust me, it's there.

Also when you create your character and log in, it gives you the general background information on your character.  An example of another mechanic that supports lore.

    Wish Darkfall would release.

I love when a lack of mechanics and contents become another "option". Awesome. Literacy is third-gen now.

What mechanich is it that is not there that makes Vanguard not to support lore?

From the way his last post read, literacy.

Factions are not necessarily good/evil. If you are a half elf, and roll into an elf area, they will not give you quests, or sell stuff to you, until you obtain faction with them by going out and killing several hundred mundane creatures. Still, they also will not attack you.

If you are a goblin and roll into an elf area, run like hell. Not only will they not talk to you, and not sell you stuff, their guards are level 50 and will fry your chitlins if they catch you. To change that you have to kill several thousand mundane creatures before they will treat you as a good guy.

That, in a nutshell, is what faction is all about.

    Ever played WoW?

It's a little better now then before but it's still one big faction grind.  Most of the instances you run for end game are designed to get rep so you can run another instance, and get more rep.  They just give you a bunch of loot to aquire inbetween getting your rep so you can do another instance to get another set of gear to replace after you've aquired the rep to run the next instance to get your next set of gear....................................

Yeah.  Sounds like 99% of all the MMO's you can play.  Grind, grind, grind, because honestly, what else are you going to do in an MMO?

You can kill stuff, you can collect stuff, or you can wait, but regardless of what it is you're doing it all comes down to grinding something.  It's just getting you to grind the game long enough to make money before the game finally starts to grind on your nerves enough to make you quit.

    Wish Darkfall would release.

I was hoping this thread wouldn't degenerate into a mud-slinging fest, but oh well...

Anyway, that's fine if factions work that way, I suppose it will let me choose how each character is seen or defined in the world without being constrained to "orc = evil = kill humans and elves" regardless of which race I roll (keeping in mind some races have KoS I would have to grind to overcome). At least that's what it sounds like from your guys' descriptions?
