Which do you support? Good grammar and correct spelling or 1337/chat speak. I support good grammar and correct spelling. it bohters m3 t0 s33 pe0ple tpying liek dis. When I read a forum topic I would rather just scroll down and read every post without having to stop and look at one guys 1337 speak and try to decipher it.

I support passable grammar/spelling. At least a perceived effort to try and be coherent.
Oops....damn I wanted to vote for good grammar and accidentely voted for chat speak.
Well, I try to chat coherently. While playing MMOGs I do not spend the time to double check what I am typing. I am that kind of guy that has typos in every line of chat.
That is why I prefer voice chat while gaming. Ease of timely and accurate communication while in the heat of battle. I only join guilds where everyone is in the habit of using voice chat.
Totally different than the people that go out of thier way to use leetspeak. Yes, that is annoying. I am also biased in favor of people that have character names that fit the genre of the game. SticknHos1337 will be the last person I invite to a raid or group.
That is why I said an effort. I typo until the cows come home in MMOs, but people normally know what I'm attempting to "say". I just hate it when I get a tell "U wna grp", or some such variation.
Typos and word shortening while in game are expected and understandable.
Posts on a message board are another thing. I have to reread some posts five or six times to figure out what the poster is trying to say. Look, I am no English professor but I think that most people can understand my posts. The sad thing is that it's not 1337 speak but simple spelling and grammar errors. Look at the bottom of the post editor, there is a Preview button for a reason. Use it!
I hate leet speak, it's annoying as hell.
I don't mind it every now and then but when you're playing an MMO and want to say something, say it properly so the other people can spend less time trying to understand what you're saying.
You are right. There is a difference between people who are really trying to spell correctly and you have to give them an A for effort. But to purposefully talk middle school AOL isn't very complimentary to the rest. I do the best I can with these posts, but often skip them. If you want people to listen to what you say, it may be best to communicate in a way that compliments the reader or at least sounds halfway intelligent.
If someone can't put forth the effort to make their text readable, they obviously don't care whether or not I read it. I usually ignore the leet/chat speak, unless I'm in a particularly jaunty mood and feel like ruthlessly mocking someone.

I vote for... balance. I try to avoid extremes here. I appreciate readable text, but I dont want grammar-fanatics in silly computer games who tar and feather you for every "lol".
People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert
I vote for no grammar and no leet speak....type it fast and get to the point.
I hate when people spend 10 mins typing a reply because they use correct punctuation.

I don't mind the "lol" and other acronyms, those are perfectly fine. I do however mind the "ne1 no wat u do 2 kill dis boss?" kiddiespeak. The one and only time I ever do that is when I send text messages since typing on a phone is a pain and you're only allowed so many characters per message. In-game, I can at least conceive that you might be doing something that requires your attention and you don't have time to type full words, but often that's not the case. In forums (and worse, school papers) kiddie/chatspeak is unacceptable. No mob is beating you, your raid group isn't going to wipe -- you're typing in a browser window with all the time in the world to spell out your words and communicate effectively.
I think because I made it all the way through school the first time around, I would have to spend more time typing the L33T. Typos are ok. If your in a hurry, there is no reason to backtrack. But do you people who 'tok leik dis', really think others take you seriously?
Try writing a resume' like that and see how far you go.
I think people should use whatever vernacular suits the forum and audience they are trying to reach. If you’re a teenager talking to your friends then use whatever language rules that are popular. However when I see Dood Speak in these forums which are visited by many varied peoples, I just cringe. Remember every generation thinks the language they use is just the coolest. Those of us that are old enough to know better just laugh. Also... If all one speaks is Dood and they don't know proper syntax or grammar, then they need to get a clue or face going through life looking like a clown. "I'm not talking perfect, but passable."
I voted for the good grammer/spelling but only to a point, I HATE HATE HATE those 1337 speak morons. But just as annoying are the "Grammer Police" who just jump on what is obviously a typo due to some one typing too fast, and they accidently hit one letter before the other.Yeah I OBVIOUSLY thought "That" is spelled "Taht" < I seem to do this one the most when i typo.
Language is a social creation that is itself constantly changing - by the time we recognize a new system and codify it, there is a new such system. Leet/chat speak are just such a system. By the same token, without rules and the inherent following of them you cannot have a structured language that is meaningful to all. The only reasonable path is to walk a balance between the two - else we would still communicate in the grunts our ancestors invented when language first arose. And we'd probably have about three or four "words". Similarly, we could all be some hip, avant-garde leet inventor whom nobody understands because no one else knows the "new" rules. This is the same piss-poor logic that underlies the whole nature vs. nuture debate - it's both, and each is inextricably linked to the other, anyone who claims one or the other exclusively is an idiot. Both the leet/proper english debate and the nature/nurture debate are false dichotomies that do hold upon rigorous examination.

I couldn't have put it any better myself.
No if they are retarded and "tok leik dis" they are in the same catagory as people who take 10 mins to reply. (not worth my time)
If you have a block of text on forums 90% wont read it cause nobody cares what you have to say if it takes more than 15 secs to read it.
Wtf does this have to do with a resume, we are talking about games here bud......

I voted for grammar mainly because its easier to read quickly than the alternative. I will however allow things like LOL or WTF as they are easy to read too and to understand once you learn what they mean and can help speed up convo's in a battle.
However i d ahte Leet speak as its not only harder to read but its also messier. I also dont mind spelling mistakes as they can ahppen when typing fast like i am now and afterall English isant everyones first language.
Grammar Police Nice to see that you have raised your head in a fourm. You guys crack me up, in EVE. Ill be out in low sec killen your ships, podding you and talken crap in local. And that is the only thing you guys can come up with. "learn how to spell and bla bla bla"
Hear try this on, your mind dont work the way you think it does....
ohhh and thats right all players speak English.
Aoccdrnig to rseerach at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. PS: Hwo'd yuo lkie to run tihs by yuor sepll ckehcer?
In games I won't group with people who use "leet speech" because 9 times outta 10 their the most pissy immature players you could possibly group with. So because of that, and how annoying it is I won't even respond to people in any game if they type like that.
It only takes a little more effort to not look like a jack ass who can't seem to spell any better than a 1st grader, and at least 1st graders know that putting numbers in words is just plain stupid, it doesn't make you look computer savvy.
You must be, what, 19 at best? Edit: nope, a 33 year-old that thinks like a 19 year-old. Screen-shotting this for its classic-issity.
As long as we control the money, we control the world. NOW DO AS WE SAY!!!

Wow. That's cool. In games in general I always write with near perfect grammer. I always type like I do here. That is because I am used to it, type faster than the average person using whatever they want, and because I prefer it.
I do not mind what other people do though. Other people have a hard time writing and I would way rather they yelled, in battle, quickly, " HEAL!" Than take forever writing out, "Can you heal me?" Our party would die and grammer would be at fault. It's what a person wants to do. However... If a person is writing in truely 1337 speak with numbers for every letter that allows it... They can do better.
If I'm engaging in coversation in guild chat or haggling prices sure I'll use correct grammar and spelling... but if I'm PvPing or fighting mobs I'm most likely just going to type what ever is faster but still understandable. 300 HP left... Mr. Priest, would you be kind enough to cast a heal on my character? haha...
