an MMOARPG

How would you guys feel about an MMO that uses the KH (kingdom Hearts) universe and uses a revamped game engine or  one inspired by it to be an mmo with a PVP system as well as a good PVE system? I'm starting my college career at UAT and getting a degree in game design  and plan on developing an MMOARPG(the A stands for action) and will make it as my thesis and will finetune it after getting a job as a designer with some company, i'm actually trying to get Copyright rights to KH, jus wanted to know what you guys would think of that

Im not very familiar with KH as ive only seen my friends play it (didnt own a ps2) but an action style MMO reminds me of what Cabal is (in some ways). If you want to follow that line of work then perhaps you should take a look at it (and other similar games) and see who they relate to what you have in mind and hwo ud like to finetune your idea. As far as an actual KH MMO it would seem interesting since theres a lot of ideas to draw from.

Either case i think the industry could use more fresh approaches to gaming than what it has now. If not to reinvent the genre at least expand on it.

Kingdom Heart series contains the combination of two large companies creations (Disney and Square-Enix).  To get the copyright of it you might need to get the green light from both companies.

As for using Kingdom Heart as MMO?  Why?  Because of it story?  or how would you design the story that works on 1000+ people?  Is everyone going to be the hero-wannabe? or does everyone have a purpose in the story/world?

I myself is a GSP (Game and Simulation Programming) student in DeVry, and I will be focusing on the development of MMO (since most of the classes for the last years will be related to multi-player games, and MMO being one of it).  So good luck to you in your college, and continue to write down your ideas and keep at it.  Oh, and if you ever get the chance, to go GDC (Game Developers' Conference) at least once (if you haven't been to one).  It'll help you a lot in the field.

    Current MMO: FFXIV:ARR

Past MMO: Way too many (P2P and F2P)

Lol I remember that game...I actually enjoyed it back when I had the console. I am thinking the MMORPG (currently in Closed Beta) called La Fiesta is gonna be something like that. Here, take a look for yourself =)

Well i don't plan on touching the actual current story at all, i plan to do something much more original, i'm sure you remember the whole light and dark themes and what not, i hope to use that as factions and create a sort of war between the two factions, there is no real hero or actual saving the world, the idea sounds redundant but i guarantee if i get the go to do so i will bring you a unique MMO. They sent me an e-mail saying that its being given serious consideration so my hopes haven't been dashed yet so lets hope for the best

I played La fiesta and its not anything like i plan on doing although it was entertaining,  I plan on doing actual twitch gameplay it would be similar to the actual original games from the PS2

yes i most certainly did, it was a decent game and it looks like it will be fun however it still has the fundamentals of a standard MMO, i need something more innovative, thats why i thought about twitch gameplay in mmo

I hate to burst your bubble, I really do, but KH is  a massive deal between Square-Enix and Disney.. You would basically have to get open rights to any and all Disney characters, and you'd have to get Square-Enix to either publish your work (not likely, as they would probably prefer to develop internally or have a hand in the entire process at minimum), or open one of their major IP's (Kingdom Hearts) to you. That said, your chances of pulling that off are none to.. well.. none.

Your ideas for a twitch-based MMO are certainly good, though, and I encourage you to pursue them and do your best to design and develop the project. I would recommend, however, that you go with an original setting as opposed to trying to use Kingdom Hearts.

I recommend that you start looking up information on the workings of networks if you havent already though. I believe the popularity of the current MMO standard is due to the fact that  ping of one second or more can still be coped with reasonably. This would not be the case in  a twitch-based MMO, so you'll need to work out how to manage thousands of connections and ensure low latency to each an every one of them. (alternatively, you could work out  a system to ensure low ping to those engaged in combat, whatever you came up with.)

Action would be great. However, Kngdom Hearts wasn't my type of game. I mean, seriously, who fights with a key?

If I could play and succeed in it, most likely.

But, if like KH, it is too reflexes/coordination oriented for me...nope.  But as long as clear and honest and no surprise; I would wish it good luck.

Make sure to have good demos, and to not trap peoples who are good in 1 aspect of the game and can't play their aspect to it fullfillment (often it is entertwined with other gameplays)...this is the worst feedback you can get.  Having more then 1 gameplay is treacherous.

Oh, twitch action...Do you mean left-click swing, right-click block kinda deal? If so, I've not seen anything like that in an MMORPG yet, just RYL had left-click swing, and AoC is looking a little twitch action driven heh.

Would be kinda cool if one person could hold his own by raising a shield eh?  I liked "Crusaders of Might and Magic" back in the day.

well if i had that attitude about obtaining rights i wouldn't get  but nevertheless i'm going to continue to hope, they said they would think about it and that is something but thanks for your input and the thought about networking, thats an obstacle i will have to overcome when i reach that bridge

The lucky thing for you is that licensing issues wouldn't affect most of your development, so holding out hope can't hurt. Best of luck to you

well i'm hoping to do this on a console believe it or not the PS3/360 have brought a new level of networking to consoles,  it will probably be a 360 game as my hope at FIRST as the 360 has the headset and its very common. I plan to do this on the PC as well too, hopefully if i get rights I will release on PC simultaneously  as well,  to make the game faster it will be built in voice chat, thats my plan anyhow and if that doesn't work out i do have a original idea as well, the original idea will be  a different game if i get rights to KH

yea it will be a pretty combat oriented game, and i'm killing the disney aspect for the most part if that can even be allowed of  cours i have my own plan of trade and what not, regardless its gonna be cool , thanks for everyone who posted, your feedback has given me some things to think about. If anyone has ideas they would like to see in an MMO like this send me an e-mail to Strife226@msn.com
