It's hard to compare sales on the Wii and PS3 since they go for different types of gamers, Wii being casual and kiddy gamers, the PS3 being hardcore and normal gamers. Also the price drop would have come eventually, did the PS1 stay at $500.00 forever? Even $600.00 isn't bad for what you get hardware wise.
PS1 was never at $500 to begin with...
I agree with Forcan. I personaly love the SONY Electronics and Gadgets but i hate SOE games.
Not that I want to start anything, but people need to separate SOE with Sony. I myself is a SOE-hater for various reasons, but in no way that I see SOE = Sony in ways of doing business. All I see is SOE bring down the name brand of Sony. As for the discussion on PS3, it should consider as something else.
Based solely on the products of SOE and Sony (I view them separately, not as a whole corporation), I see two different standard, and that Sony prevail in their service over SOE.
Also, Sony only took off $100 in the US/EU version of PS3, they are still selling at original price in Asia. So when a good game comes out on PS3, the sale will pick up (like all console, games is the major factor)
Maybe. When consumers said it was too expensive to begin with did they listen? Remind you of the NGE or the CU before it? "Exploding" batteries must be the sign of true service. Sony's management has been plagued by some very unsavory behavior of late and if it was just an SOE thing I'd understand. When its an isolated incident fine. When it is a trend?
I use to really enjoy my Sony products and movies. I am alot more careful with them lately. I see a very distrubing trend very similar to its little sister company SOE.

While I disagree that the Wii is only for kiddies and casual gamers, I can see where it might be unfair to compare the two consoles. They are nothing alike. However, you can compare PS3 to XBox 360 and it's still getting spanked.
Also, it isn't totally fair to say that the Wii sales aren't related to the PS3, either. I know plenty of people, myself included, that after they buy 1 console, that is it. I bought the Wii, I won't buy the PS3 or XBox 360 until they are super cheap. So yes, the Wii sales are effecting the sales of the PS3.
And yeah, $500 isn't bad for what you get, hardware-wise. But why do we need it? Sure, Blu-Ray is ridiculously expensive and this is the cheapest way to get it... but why? Why do we need Blu-Ray? It is driving up the price and it is pretty much worthless. It's much more expensive and the benefits are almost none. Forget it. PS3 is not what gamers want.
Personally, I am suprised gamers want to spend that much money on what is essentially a box that cost almost as much as a computer, can't do as much as a computer, and it's games cost $60... while a computer's games cost $50 and get free support/patches and are moddable.

Batteries isn't really a good argument since Toshiba and Mac had the same problem just on a slightly smaller scales because they had mulitple battery providors.

It's an inferior platform! They all are :P
True, games all come down to personal preference... but in general the Wii is focused on that type of gamer. Personally I'd never by a Wii, I own XBox 360 and PS3. I'll agree to the fact that consoles are inferior! But also they are cheap, you won't be playing any games on a $500.00 computer. A nice computer that runs most all games well will cost you at least $1500... at least.

Good points. I'd like to add that software house like EA no longer see an advantage of making games souly for 1 platform and when the makers of Sony's exclusive games open up to other platforms like what happened to Nintendo in the 90's the blood will be really ugly for Sony. I believe the makers of Ghost Recon have already stated they are considering opening the game up for multiple consoles because of fears of not being able to recoup development costs and turn a profit.
As Cost to churn out titles rises so does the need to make your game available to as many consumers as possible.

Again, not trying to argue, just want to point something out.
What is too expensive? PS3? But is it worth it? It depends on individual. Most would agree that PS3 is a bit on the high end in its price, but when they check out the spec, and other factors, some gamers does believe that it is worth the money.
Issues with batteries plagues all computer companies. I remember a while ago Dell experience some of it, Toshiba had some news about it, Mac has the issue a while back too. I believe that even IBM had such issue (can't remember exact date and stuff, but I do remember reading about it). So it's not just Sony that has the problem, it has happened to many other companies.
And being careful with any electronic product is just smart, so good for you. There are some of the issues that people believe to be just "coincidence", some believe that all are linked and there is a declining trend in the service/product quality of Sony Corporation as a whole (that includes SOE). Although many of it is debatable, I won't get into it. I'm only trying to treat each case on its own unless there is reason to believe they are linked together.
Wow... I can practically smell the crazy coming off of that post.
Holy Blast from my past avatar, Danjak! I just sold all my old CW stuff on Ebay about a year ago...Uncle Al's, ADQ's, the works......SJG's freakin rules...erm, ruled :P
