Alright, Im getting guild wars: factions today, but I cant for the life of me decide which class I want to pick. all of them look like they could be fun, so I was wondering if someone could give me a run down of the pros and cons of each class, how fun they are to play, and if there is an over/underpopulation of that class (I hate playing the same thing that everyone else does)
the class im interested in are:
necromancer
assasin
ritualist
ranger
monk
thanks for any advice

All the classes are fun, you have to try them out and decide which one suits your play-style. Mix and match different class combo's to see how their skills interact with each other. GW is not like your typical MMO. I play PVP and no PVE. I have a character of every class that I change depending on my mood.
First thing you should do is try going to GuildWiki and research for yourself.
Second thing you can do is look at different examples of builds by going to some other fansites... links are on GW mainpage.
There is no best class and only yolu can decide your play style, but here is a very very basic rundown and over generalization of the classes you mentioned.
Necro - Basically played one of 2 ways - As a Minion Master / or as a Spiteful Spirit(anti-melee mostly). Both builds are viable in both PvE and PvP. Spiteful Spirit (aka SS Necro) is used to farm also. Large amounts of both are represented in the game.
Sin - Basically if you are a ganker at heart sin's are for you. Played as a high damage all or nothing character, although there are some high quality defensive skills like Shadow Form. Currently and over population in PvP of these guys ( I made a character to specifically hunt them down and destroy ) . As much as I dislike this class though...they are good for killing stuff quick.
Rit - I see most often Healing Rits and Spirit Spammers. Both decent in PvP and PvE, although seen often in RA(Random Arena). Dont see a whole lot of rit primary classes but their weapon spells allow them to be quite useful as a secondary class.
Ranger - One of my favorite classes. They are very versatile and can be played a in a bunch of different ways. Common Builds include, Burning Arrow (degen), Trapper, Barrage Pet and Interupter. These characters are hardy and can mix it up from distance and close range. A lot of fun and a lot of options. I would suggest this as a starting class although there are a lot of them out in the GW world.
Monk - There are never enough of these guys around when you need them. THey are always in high demand. This class takes a lot of practice as you will have one of the most stressful jobs ever, keeping your teammates alive. A good monk is worth his/her weight in gold and a bad monk is just dead space. There are protector and and healer monks, smite monks are pretty much laughed at in the current meta-game. I wonder if they will ever come into use again.
