I'm really suprised

I'm really suprised just how good the game is. i normally dont post here although i do read  these forums quite frequently. i've played  a few of the 'newer' games ie. wow eq 2 but i really miss this style of gaming. it brings me back to my eq1 days. i miss the days when you can just see if friends are online and hunt with them instead of running from one quest to another. dont get me wrong i like the missions and quests,and probably spent the first day learning a little of the lore in town and picked up various quests. it doesnt seem to be the central focus of the game. ive only seen a few zones but for a first(?) mgeneration game the graphics dont seem dated at all.

i really enjoyed the boat ride from mhaura to selbina, your boat can even be attacked mid trip. i dont know why they steered away from decent sized boat trips ive always found them very social. well there is so much i could say and i havent seen more then 1% of the whole game being only level 11 but im very happy with FFXI.

i was going to go to vanguard because of brad mcquad andthe fact that it was done more old school then the newer games. but i heard some pretty mixed reviews about it and i also heard the population is fairly low so i really dont expect them to fix or expand the world very quickly. its a shame though the game seemed to have so much potental to bad it was released way to early and had that whole microsoft dropping them thing happen.

Welcome to Vana'diel!  I've tried a few MMOs too, but none hooked my interest like FFXI.  I keep canceling due to finance concerns, but then before I return, I'm dumb enough to return to WoW or other MMOs I've tried with long-term account plans [6 months], only to get bored with the thing barely 1/2 in.  I hope to just say goodbye to that whole World of other MMOs, and return to Vana'diel sometime in the next few weeks...  I missed it...  Compared to other games, this game is very social.  Also, it has more to it in grinding and killing.  Some missions technically don't even involve that much grinding, like the Windurst quest with the sphere things early on.  You technically don't need to kill anything if you can somehow sneak past em.   Well, I hope my finances balance out next week.

It's nice to hear you're having fun.    FFXI can really be an "acquired taste" for most players.  But this really is THE game for PVE players and socializers who like to group up with other players to get through things.  I know I enjoyed my time on it.

I as well am impressed with the game, and even more since I started playing it on the XBOX 360, which to me the graphics seem alittle better than the pc I was running it on...But I love this game and been a fan of FF since the very beginning with the NES console....

Thats good to know you like it. I just bought the game with my friend and 2 of my other friends are going to give it a try so it  will be a good time. By the way,  I have been hearing that you can't pick which servers you play on and i heard you can switch servers with a buddy pass i was wondering how do you get one.

When you first create your character, they now let you pick the server you want to create it on.  Not quite sure when it started, but you can once you create.  If you already made a character, they offer a character transfer service that you can try if you want.

Helluva thing to want to find out *after* you've picked the game up, isn't it? :-)

Seriously, though, FFXI is far from dead. There are plenty of people playing it; around 600k. The concept of "everyone is high level already and it's too late to start" doesn't work because people are always starting new jobs, so you'll always find people leveling at the lower ranges, etc.

In any case, welcome, take your time and enjoy!

no the game is not dead yet, a new expansion is coming out by the end of the years,  on peak time there's about 1500 to 2000 peoples connected.

You're on a slow server then.  Peak time on Bismarck can reach 3000+.  About 1am EST we have almost topped 3100 before.
