Player Vs AI = PVP, not PVE? Possible?

Player Vs AI = PVP, not PVE? Possible? Is this possible? I find it possible. Imagine, a generated AI player hunts mobs as you do just that he doesn't talk. He goes around town, buys item, he trades item too. And you can challenge him or even PK him and he dies and respawns in town and maybe he scolds on the main screen " YOU BASTARD ". Imagine all these are unknown to the players, the players think he is a player when he is actually not a player. Is this actually possible? ..

Yes very possible, and that person next to you may just be a robot ...

Seriously though AI isnt that advanced yet, but it would be good if all NPC's actually had proper AI whereby they did whatever their job should be, IE instead of standing by a tree all day he would go and do some hunting, kill a rabbit, take it home and make a pie. Then you could see him by the tree eating pie.

It would bring games to life in a whole new way, especially if you could script them personalities so they actually spoke to you. and this is possible because lots of phone chat lines use similar technology to trick you into talking to a PC instead of a person.

    Totally agree dude..

Now let's imagine a game with it ( i love to do this):

Imagine you're playing CoH. You see a hero attacking some roadside mobs. You talk to him but he doesn't say a sh*t. You ask him if he wants to party but he still doesn't say anything. Now, you try /invite him . He accepts and u start talking thrash to him. After talking a whole lot of thrash to him, he responds and says " You're too noisy " .. lol.. wouldnt that be great? :D.. Then after a while, when he lvls and gains lots of enhancements , he says " Im going to Atlas Park to train and sell enhancements " .. you will really think he's a real player when actually he's AI. I wish there was such AI :) .. then the shop keeper, he won't be just standing there the whole day. He will employ AI Heroes to help him sell the items and they change shift, you also get to see the actual shopkeeper opening his shop, eating lunch and stuff :D.. and he can fight villains off. if COV comes out, there will be AI Villains too.. OMG.. !!!

Thinking about it this doesnt sound all that hard to do. I am not technical and dont know how much server power/ bandwidth it would need but since most games dont have that many NPC's anyway you may as well give them something to do besides stand about and spam the same phrase over and over again. If your shopkeeper is also a hero it would be nice to watch him go and hero about for a while, if one day he has a new axe for sale, chances are thats because he went out and slew its previous owner not long ago.

I guess they wouldnt really need too advanced AI for this, because it can be programmed to be at certain places or hunt certain enemies, then return to his base/shop. Even the civilians should have something to do such as picking the kids up, going home, hanging the washing out etc etc.

Welll EQ2 is something like that. The NPC all have schedules. So they wont always be in same spot and of course NPCs interact with eachother. I think its a huge step up! The world will feel more realistic. Seeing a Master Mage walk by a teacher teaching students and he watchs and then talks. Intresting!

As for player AI. IT would be possible for todays current AI to buy and sell and also hunt with some talk. Imagine combining Alice AI(she talks to you on net) and a game AI thats worthy.

    Issue would be CPU load.

Technology is still far away from this.Although like someone pointed out in EQ2 npcs will wander and do a routine it will just  that a routine. But its a step forward.

Also fighting a group of mobs will be a bit more challenging ie if the healer is under attack the warrior mobs will go to save him .But from what you are proposing its still a long way off.Is it possible?Yes someday it will be possible.Someday we will travel faster then light .But no one knows when or how long it will take.

I dont think the actual technology is all that far away. Maybe the bandwidth/ server power needed will make it to restrictive and thus it could be far away in that respect. But there is already some pretty good combat AI and if they could script this into some kind of routine system then it would work. i just dont think companies think this is a worthwhile investment to make when they are having a hard enough time getting the gameplay etc right.

from past experience we should all know that what's hyped up about and promised won't see the light of day...you're saying eq2...well is it written in stone that you will see that sort of interaction? no it isn't..they can promise it all they want but if they don't follow through with it you look like an idiot on the forum.

    What's the fun in that?

Most interesting part of PvP is when you kill someone, and he starts whining why you killed him "Oh God, why oh why", and of course swearing, talking how he will kill you next time, how he only had half of his HP etc. :P .

There is no thrill in killing AI, at least not for me. If some game was to make this, then why leave normal mobs at all??

If they AI was smart enough to get mad and have a semi-intel then it would be worth killing :) Just like a 4 year old in PVP lol.

As for EQ2 not having what it says....

Ive seen the vids of gameplay at E3 and its all there. Speech...schedules for npc.. Its great! Made WOW look boring. The interaction of NPC is amazing!

I would Die if that ever happened.. Just imagine the possiblities.... I know the whole Idea of MMO's is the community of players... but now thinking about it, making this AI, wouldn't that make the computer a "player" also? hmmmm ... that's an interesting topic for Phylosophy buffs to mull over.. But this would be a whole new experience.. more immersive also.. because now EVeryone is competing... wouldn't it be cool if NPC's would compete for customers also..? Soliciting.. JEEZ i have to stop thinking about it cuz i'll fill up this whole thread...

As long as you dont forget the main point of why a player play a RPG, the player is a Hero.  The player is outstanding, he have more stats, is more uber then pretty much every NPC and most certainly any army.

The dreaming is what matter to many.  If the AI is just exactly like me, why dont we just play a simple system and get with all those unrealistics complexs rules to make the players heros?

I dont mind a few, singles(not raid of them) NPCs that are equal to player, and maybe less then 10 can have a special very uber(more then the players) class, but not many of them.

I play to enjoy my time, winning, been uber, seeing very nice turns in my adventurer life.  If I am just to be a mundane adventurer in a swarm of them, what is the point?  I dont mind sharing that adventurer side to every human player as long as the world and the game can support us all, but with AI?  Dont read me wrong, I dont mind AI at all, but if I am drowning in a world where AI get way to uber for me(now dont be that afraid, when AI is to uber for me, you already lost 95% of your players), I will move where I can be a hero again(another MMORPG), I mean, a real RPG player traditionnally play either for roleplaying or to be a hero and save the world(or whatever smaller goal more realist or more evil)...and roleplaying have failed as far as I am concern on the computer.

Althought this may be more appealing to untradionnal RPG players, on which topic I have no idea.  Most RPG players dont stand much PvP or raiding since those very concept are against the very basic of what a RPG is.  (dont read that every RPG player dont like raiding or PvP, I say MOST RPG players, in the ranks of the raiders I dont count many persons that actually finish any Black Isles or SSI RPG or any real RPG(Diablo is not a real RPG sorry, althought any FF will be a RPG despite my dislike for that precise line)).

If all you want is challenge, you should try to beat Big Blue rather then play a MMORPG!

Challenge is fun and part of what I want, but I wont lie, it is only a part of it, a necessary part, but to much or to few wines during a meal is no good!
