I havent really looked too much into Aion untill recently, and it looks beautiful. At first glance it looks like something I wouldent mind playing, but then I watched that clothing video, which in itself was cool, but while watching it I had flash backs of Final Fantasy 11. Asian MMO's are typically full of grinding and I see that Aion is an asian MMO. So, any word on wether this one is gonna be different than the rest or is it going to be FFXI style leveling?

As far as art though, it does look pretty good. I still personally feel that Lineage 2 had some of the most talented graphical artists of any MMO I have ever played. Going into Cruma Tower or The Giants Cave made me see that. So I'm starting to think some Korean graphics people are really good, but I still don't think a single Korean game designer is worth a hoot.
This game looks almost to good to even care about grinding :P
But I've never really cared about grinding before
And yes lineage 2 was amazing graphically, I loved just looking at aden castle in that game
Its been said from the beginning that this game will have less grind that most asian style games since its being developed with the western gamer in mind. Wether thats true or not remains to be seen. The art style is nice and NC always seems to amaze me with their lush environments and character designs. I do hope this game delivers since we all stand to benefit from another good game in the market. And ofc its not a traditional MMO (elves/orcs etc) but rather angels and demons, the thrid faction (dragons) are NPC and make desicions based on how the player base performs. Its a unique concept which at least demands some attention merely because its different from the norm. Only time will tell if its good but im excited about this game.
Not to change subjects, but you say the dragons are NPC. Can a player be on teh side of evil?
It's angel-like race versus demon-like race, but I don't think they said it was evil vs. good... It's just more like 2 separate races I think... And yes, players can choose to play one of these two races...
I think I read somewhere that translated an interview with the developers... I remember that they said for casual players, who play about 20 hours a week, they said it should take about 3 months to reach max level. And they said it can be as fast as 1 month if you play a whole lot. That said, no, it's not nearly as fast a WoW and such... Imo, I don't mind taking longer to reach max level, as long as it's fun, and hopefully, the difference between strength between levels isn't too great (like WoW and other mainstream games)...
Well, they are claiming that Aion is being developed with less of a grind than Lineage 2. Somewhere in some interview they said that the "grind" would fall somewhere between Lineage 2 and WoW. While this might sound good do not forget that they said that lineage2 would not be the same grind as it was in korea. That they had developed the game and provided their western partners with the ability to modify the drop rates and xp rates to be more suitable to the western audience. Yet, Lineage2 has the exact same grind regardless of what region you choose to go through.
Depending on the fee model for this game I may give it a try... also depends on when it will release. However I do not see this as anything that will hold my attention or my gaming dollar for very long.

I myself come from a lavish background in Final Fantasy 11 online. I was devoted to the game for 3 years. I was one of the very few NA players that was part of the BETA. I left FFXI a few months ago due to a career change which kept me from being able to devote ungodly amounts of my time to it. FFXI is an aweful grind, I will admit, but I loved that grind because I made many good friends ingame. Many of whom I'm still in regular contact with even after leaving the game several months ago. ALL MMORPG have some sort of grind. Whether it be via quests, mob killing, raids etc. One only has to figure out which grind they would rather undertake and stick with that.
NCSoft has said that Aion will offer players the ability to choose the path they want to take for gaining levels. So if you want to go kill the same mobs at a camp over and over again while chatting with your friends (my personal fav type of grinding) you can. Or if you want to go lead a 18 man raid on Boss X... you can go do that too. Each method they have said won't be nearly as time consuming as previous games such as FFXI in which every time you sit in front of the computer you better be willing to lose 2 hours fo your time in order to accomplish anything. I use to spend about 35-40 hours a week playing FFXI (yes I know that's a lot). So with my gaming "habit" plus leading a very active lifestyle... I want something more rewarding. I think Aion will be what is called for in this case.

All MMOs will have grind. Level grind, Gear grind, rep grind, money grind, grind, grind, grind.
These games are designed to keep you playing (potentialy) for years. You are gonna have to do something in that time. To me I don't care what form the grind takes, as long as it is diverse and enjoyable. And there is plenty of things to do when you aren't grinding.
Theres no way to know yet if Aion will be grindy or not. But at very least they are aiming for a casual market. As well as customizing it to the different markets. Now we just have to see if they keep their promise.
Thanks for all the replys guys/gals. I understand what alot of you are saying and I know that there is a grind per say in every MMO out there. I like the point someone made about a "diverse grind". I guess when you think about it, if a MMO successfully implements a "diverse grind" then you as a player wont even look at it as a grind at all. Heres to hoping Aion pulls that off.
I can already see this game will make my computer muscles flex harder than they ever have before ><. It looks so pretty, I'd almost be ok with grinding, as long as the animations and incresed effectivness of the spell are well represented. The animation, while astonishing, needs to give me that "omg own'd" on defeated npc. However, watch what you will for, less you become victom to the repeditive generic facemeltingly lame quest engine blizzard has burned into our flesh. With any luck, we can look forward to some nice group instance like content (yes I siad group, you mmo hermits who don't like to play with others) E.X storm a ransacked castle and flight swarms of evil (or good) forces with the sweet red gooey juices that makes me squeel like a girl being slung all over my screen. Ok It wont be like that but still, mixing well thought out instancing, quest (that dont suck, i.e collecting wolf tails oftening finding that some wolves don't have them 0.o) and PRETTY grinding.
Sorry I had nothing useful to contribute to this conversation, and yes I see the typos I'm not fixing them.
Clever things.
IMO a game that looks as good as Aion is able to be a grind fest yet still be fun. IMO
As well they stated there will not be retarded instance grinding at max level like in WoW to get the high end gear.
3 months actually isn't that bad at all. I played L2 for a year and a half very activily and it took me a year to get lvl 75. I probably would've of gotten it a lil sooner if it weren't for the fact we were fighting a much larger alliance for control of what was the best leveling area at the time for a solid 2 months. at lvl 74 your xp bar would only move like 1% an hour. I'm going to remain wary about NCsoft though, they literally treat their customers like shit and crap like botting/modding became rampant to the point where almost everyone was doing it.
Hey i had the same flash back too! wonder why... oh well i hope it will be just as good as FFXI or even better. good thing it has solo grinding too i hate to be LFG for hours at a time.
I just hope this game doesn't disapoint because it does look really cool. YOu cant blame people for being worried about it turning into a boring grind fest even though 100% of mmo's contain grinding, like one the post said above as long as its interesting.
I hope it doesnt turn out like RF online which looked really pretty and had a lot of people excited but turned out with no guts.
We shall see
You know, I don't care what the grind is like, just as long as you don't lose EXP when you die. That will kill it for me. Heck, I might not mind losing exp as long as I don't have to sit in Jueno for 2 hours waiting for another party just to have it disband after two kills, wait another 2 hours for a party, then wipe in the party making everyone want to leave and leaving me with even less EXP than before and not getting anywhere.
Yeah, I hate FFXI. lol. It's set up was terrible and it made you have to find 4 other guys and schedule your time around them so you could have a static EXP party. Don't like that. I like leveling when I want to level, going with the flow and not just getting on to just level like everyone else does.
Here's hoping this game doesnt force you into parties to exp grind or make you lose large amounts of exp.
Yup yup.. that brings back memories. FFXI thus becomes one of the most graphically intensive chat-rooms ever made lol. I always hated that shyte. I once hauled my butt all the way up to Sky from SanD only for the party to have disbanded 10 minutes before I got there... and they didn't even tell me they were disbanding! "Oh... we disbanded already.. thanx anyway.." @.@ wtf??? LOL That was back in the day before all the easy warps.. back when it took almost 30 minutes to make that same trip. Now the trip takes just 5 minutes lol.

Just to clear on 2 things:
1. The grind element will still be there, BUT, NCSoft already stated that the grind will not be like Lineage 2.
2. There is a death penalty, but only a small amount. This is according also to NCSoft.
Of course this may change in the future. If the grind is moderate why not? I mean WOW has also the grind thing, how come many players are still hooked on it?
As long as an MMORPG is an MMORPG, there will be SOME grind. It's whether developers can turn the grind into something fun to do, or at least diminish it.
NCsoft is attempting to market this as a "grindless" game, but really, I just think they are working on making it less, and making it fun, thus taking away the FEELING of the grind.
