DirectX 10 How long will it be Vista only?

TibbzTibbz Member UncommonPosts: 613

http://www.technospot.net/blogs/download-directx-10-for-windows-xp-from-alky-project/

Already people are claiming they are creating "clones" for DX10 non - vista.

The latest release versions of DirectX, DirectX 10 and DirectX 9Ex, are exclusive to Windows Vista. Microsoft claims the reason for this is that there have been extensive changes in the Windows graphics architecture and introduction of the Windows Display Driver Model.

Now is this True or will Xp actually get good ole DX10.  I have played with Vista at work and personally I really don't like it (it is also still as bug packed as Vanguard).  Has anyone heard any official newas about XP and DX10?  I really would hate to buy Vista just for the fact of playing AoC a bit better lol.

NOTE:  When i say "XP" i do mean the 64 version.

    Well, following the links through it seems that they believe that dx10 is the only way to get shadowrun etc to run on XP.  However, this is most certainly not the case by any stretch of the imagination.

     back  with  Shadowrun, the  new  multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) based

     on  the  much-beloved  role-playing  game (RPG)  franchise. Shadowrun propels

     team-based  combat  into a new dimension with a revolutionary blend of modern

     weaponry  and  ancient magic. Up to 16 players can battle for control of this

     new   world  through  Xbox  360-to-Windows  Vista  online  compatibility.  In

     Shadowrun  players  vie  for supremacy in a  constantly evolving  battlefield

     where  advanced  technology  and  ancient magic provide  an unprecedented and

     high-velocity tactical action experience.

     Release Notes

     Tired of waiting for Falling Leaf to produce drivers so that you can play

     Shadowrun in XP? The wait is over, because Razor1911 already has the remedy!

     Yes, you read right. This game will also function in Windows XP (following the

     installation procedure below).

     This release will work with bot matches and lan mp. If you want to play

     online, buy the game!

     Install Notes

     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     1. Extract RARs
     2. Install
     3. Go into your installationfolder and delete the srsw_shadowrun.dll.
     4. Copy srs_shadowrun.dll and srsx_shadowrun.dll to your installationfolder.
     5. If you want the XP compatability, copy the files from the xp/ subdir to
        your installationfolder.
     6. If you want a shortcut on your desktop, this is the time to make one!
     7. Play!
     8. Have fun!
    This is just a cut and paste from an nfo file that is freely available on the net.  I in no way, through the pasting of the above, am condoning or suggesting that people steal software.  It is just that through modifcation of some dll files supposed directx10 only games are fully functional through XP.  This tells me that the "extensive changes" touted by Microsoft are more a case of marketing bs to entice people to buy into their Vista operating system.  Unfortunately for us, the gamers, we will either need to rely on the old hacker scene to get games running on our legit copies of XP or we will have to upgrade and deal with the system instabilities provided by the new bloatware operating system.
    There are currently no Direct X 10 games on the market. Making a Direct X 9 Vista only game (Like Shadowrun) work on Windows Xp isn't very hard.
    But I don't think it should be impossible to get a true Direct X 10 game to run on Xp. But it won't work by just replacing some files. You will have to have a version of Direct X 10 itself running on Windows Xp. There are already projects working on this.
  • TibbzTibbz Member UncommonPosts: 613
    Well I just hope once Vista makes MS enough $$ that they will make a version for XP.  I like my nice solid OS.  Vista has way too much froof and thier "enhanced networking capabilities" are nearly the same as xp professional with just prettier buttons .  MS has put out some much steam about DX10 and how much better it is I am almost calling BS on that.   Until i see actual gameplay i dont think i will be convinced; no mattter how tempting it may seem.
    Ug rambling aside i just really would hate to pay 200+ bucks for dx10 and extra Vista Froof.
    I've no issues with Vista, and when dx10 games come out i'd rather play them on Vista instead of some using some hacked thing with XP. Its the way it was meant to be played and yes M$ forced our hand to Vista for dx10 only fine, but with a service pack 2 upgrade to vista expected the same time as AoC comes out, im sure it will sort out most of the issues people experience. Just my opinion
  • PhoenixsPhoenixs Member Posts: 2,646
    Microsoft can make Direct X 10 work on Xp any day. And it isn't really about costs. It's one of their strategies to get people over on Vista.
    Service pack 1 is coming to Vista around the release of Age of Conan. I think it will enter beta any day now, the service pack 1. Service pack 2 is still way off.
    I did mean pack 1 sorry was a typo.
    For me, Im happy to move on to Vista.
    I have read that many believe M$ has already made DX10 for XP sp3.They did this in case they wind up in legal issues,they could release it.Originally at one time game makers had to test multiple hardware types for their games.So to make a uniformed API they urged M$ to do it since it had to run on their os.Now less than a decade later M$ usurps the API ,and holds consumers hostage to buy their next bunk os. How they are getting away with this is beyond me.The only remedy may be some enraged gamer going postal on MS$.
    Well, it's terrible, but what are you going to do? Use Macintosh? Linux? Seriously, there are not a great many viable options for operating systems. People make software for Microsoft too, and that is a huge reason to use it. Microsoft is evil, but it seems like the best option. It's a shame.
Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."
    So I guess the best option is to just suck it up and buy Vista.  I will try to hold out to AoC launch and I am almost posotive that the second i buy Vista i will see this:
    "DirectX 10 NOW For XP!!"
    This is from a scan done a few minutes ago by the Windows Game Advisor to check if my comp could run Halo 2. By the way, I run XP Pro:
    My System
    Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3.60MHz
    Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS
    Memory: 1024MB
    Disk Space: 7.0GB
    Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista
     Notice the graphics card requirement is directx9 compatible?
    The only thing requiring Windows Vista is a code in the game which checks against the operating system. So yes, Microsoft is forcing people to buy Vista to play games that are not even directx10 dependant.
    And for anyone who says "Oh well, what're ya gonna do? Vista is worth it anyway!" , remember that in 2009 (less than 1.5 years from now) when Windows Vienna is set to be released to replace Vista. Hope they don't decide to market directx11 with that one, eh?
    I heard that's  impossible to run DX10 on XP. There has already been projects and they aren't truly DX10 on XP. At this point it's impossible without rewriting the OS.
    Yep, just like it was impossible to run Windows on a mac, break Windows activation, and a slew of other things.
    There is no such thing as impossible anymore when it comes to software. Most of the hackers/crackers have more experience than the ones building the software in the first place.
    Actually, there wouldn't be anything illegal about it at all.
    If I own XP (which I do) and I pay for (therefore own) a game that needs dx10, and someone makes an open source "wrapper" ( a bit of code) for the dx9 driver to communicate with dx10 software/hardware, there is absolutely nothing the cops or MS could do.
    All the code does is bridge the gap between dx9 and dx10, which the SDKs for both are readily available from MS.
    No copyrights are broken or infringed.
    Shadowrun is not a DirectX10 game. It is DX9 only. The reason it is only for Vista is Games For Windows LIVE support, which Microsoft has now said will be available for XP soon anyway.
    That, and MS deliberately set the game to check against the OS, which is why the crack had to be made. They could have easily made the LIVE bit optonal until it was released for XP. Instead, they forced (or tried to force lol) people into buying Vista to play a game that did not require it.
    Personally, I wish it was DX10. The 360 players get nice motion blur effects, we PC players get screwed out of them.
    Some background that I have heard about vista before I bad mouth it. (Anyone correct me with evidence if anything is wrong).
    Vista was supposed to be a new kernel from scratch. Fact is that the first attempt to do this didnt work setting the project back quite some time. So they took and modified the XP kernel ( which isnt a massively bad move.. imho)
    Vista was supposed to have a brand new spanking file system to replace NTFS. This didnt emerge. Not sure the reason why. Its the same  old NTFS file system that XP and windows 200 has.
    Fact is there is not much in Vista which isnt already available for XP. Modded kernel, same filesystem. Unless anyone wants DRM ;)
    I think its for this reason we wont see DirectX10 in any shape or form ( cut down , slower or whatever) for WIndows XP. The sales of Vista are not bad but not great by M$ "dominate all immediatly" standards. For example : In the UK Dell Computers ( It think) put XP back on its shelves after customers complained about Vista and lack of XP. I get the impression despite "games for windows" the indistry has not imbraced DX10 wholeheartedly. I get the impression M$ would rathwr they produced DX10 version only but this isnt viable option for companies invovled.
    I could be wrong. But I'm not upgrading to Vista and I'm qute happy with directX 9 ( despite having a 8800 ironically) Its too costly and I'm not fooled by its development ( plsu you may have noticed I'm not a great M$ fan).
    Maybe if the uptake continues to be sluggish we might get lucky and M$ will drop the stupid price of its new not so god like OS. Maybe pigs will fly.
    Horrible truth is.. thanks to M$ dominance... the future isnt one of choice but rather deciding when to jump to the new boat. (For me right after service pack one... as any wise man knows)..
    It is true that Vista has a "better" kernal, actually more like  a kernal shield (AHEM almmost identical to Macs for some ODD reason lol).  The NTFS is the same as well, kinda.  In theory it, paired with and updated bios (not the 1980s version) is supposed to map and raid better; just an NTFS 2.0.  I dont think it even has FAT options.  The biggest "advantage" of Vista is its Solid and easy to use networking.  After playing with it it is almost identical to XP Pro with just prettier and easier to read buttons/interface.  It also says that it is so .... secure.... that you will not need virus protection (HAHAHA LMFAO...)
    in general it is a completely different foundation then previous windows.  in theory it MAY be true that dx10 can only run on vista, thus in order to run it on XP it will have to be more like a dx10 simulator.
    In short M$ stole more ideas from Mac and mad a prettier interface.  (as for office 2007, i love that, especially excel lol)
    Yep, and that delay is why Vista has been turned into a glossy ME. Windows Vienna slated to replace Vista in 2009, barely a 2 year gap between the two OS versions. Would have normally been a four or five year span. I'm not wasting money for something I have to buy again in 2 years because of new "special features".
     Yes, you're refering to the WinFS filing system, which they removed to keep from falling any further behind schedule. It's now slated for Vienna.
    In short, MS screwed up on their timetables, and expect us pay for something that: 1.) was years late, 2.)lacking several key systems promised, 3.) obsolete in less than two years (in MS's plans anyway), due again to their fall behind on timing.
    I can wait for Vienna, since then it'll basically be a stable Vista with the rest of it's original features implemented and maybe then worth the price.
  • tombear81tombear81 Member Posts: 810
    If Vista is leaving a sour taste in my mouth. Thanks for reading my post and confirming / outlining things. In light of this its going to be real hard to decide if games like Conan will get directX10 running in some form on XP. There seemsa lot of technical AND politcial factors on M$ behalf.
    I can certainly wait till Vista service pack one and maybe all the way to Vienna
    Oh well we get a directX9 client anyways and no doubt many people will "upgrade" their OS and play Conan using directx10 and moan about performance. I'm stciking with the devil I know !
    I didn't feel like quoting the person but I think this pertains to the entire thread, alot of people seem to not like the idea of DX10, I beg to differ, a game where you can find comparisons is a game called Crysis coming out for the PC and 360.
    Watch the dx9 and dx10 comparisons and it's like going from a normal tv(dx9) to a really nice hdtv(dx10)
    it's HUGELY noticeable what they can do with dx10 in comparison.
