I would also like to know. I have several 50s I leveled before ToA, and I stoped playing soon after the release of the expansion. If the game is still alive I am deeply considering coming back.
It depends on the time of day you play and if you want to start over. At the times I have been awake, the regular clusters are down to around 700 people and the "classic" are around 1300. During peak times, the regular clusters are between 1200-1800 and the "classic" are 2200-2500.
The overall populat is certainly lower. The population seems to be flatening out around the current number of subscribers. For the handful that leave a handful start playing. If you are playing DAOC at this point, it is not as though there is any other game out that you would play because there is nothing like it. I do not know what things will be like in 6-12 months when AoC and WAR come out (WAR is not going to be like DAOC not matter what people keep saying) because these games might pull away players.
While there is a substantially smaller population, DAOC has taken many steps to address problems. There is a /lfg channel, a better guild system, ToA has been nerfed to hell (only takes 8 people or less to do all but one thing there). Leveling has been made a lot quicker - about the fastest in any fantasy mmorpg out there. Any class can level solo at a decent pace (pretty much any class can kill oranges now with no little to no downtime). Items have been added to make leveling easier and quicker (items that regrend end, health, power for example). There is also an advice channel and realm chat channel. Both of those are use widely making the world feel less empty and new players are getting help. There are new players, I end up talking to at least one a day through the advice channel.
Instead of expansion, they are adding storyiines that last around 6 months. These involve quests, mobs, and old zones getting a make over. Many of these quests can be done solo, but some require groups. There are dragon raids going on multiple times a day now (part of the campaigns).
The frontiers are being redone in 2 patches from now. While there is still plenty of RvR action, in general it is time to update the fronters. Further, the frontiers are "too big" for the games population. Or rather, that with fewer people out and the size staying the same, then running into enemies is less likely now for roaming groups. This will be the 3rd frontiers when it is launched.
So, unless there is another game you would rather be playing, I can't see any reason not to come back regardless of the fewer numbers.
I played it first about a year or so ago and started on the classic server and loved it. Unfortunately real life kind of took all my time so I had to stop. Just recently, as in a week ago I was really craving some MMO action and started it back up and I'm loving it even more. The classes are so unique, the PVP is fun, and if you play on the classic server Gareth there are actually a healthy amount of people. It's also really cool that they give the game itself and the first 4 expansions out for free, all you do is download them. I would definately give this one a try.

I reactivated 2 weeks ago and am having a blast, I was surprised to see so many friends still playing the game after having been away for 1.5 years. Also seems lots of peepz are reactivating atm, almost daily that I see old friends return.
Overal population size? ToA servers all feel like what was a medium pop server back in the days. Don't know about classic, since well... I liked ToA (even for all its flaws), ToA has been overhauled now anyway. However if you are starting new I'd say you go to Classic since thats where most of the new people are rolling and seems to have the best low level crowd of all servers.
I remember this oldie, i was lucky to get into closed beta, go through to open beta (stress testing) and then played it for just over a year and a half. I remeber the fun times me and a couple of friends had scouting the RvR area's, hunting for the unweary and generally having a blast.
I did take a look at the game about a year or so ago with one of those free 2 week offers, alas i didnt stay a day. No body around, nobody to talk with, and the graphics were ancient. I think i mainly left to keep the good thoughts i had about this game. I did get told at peak time there was only about 300 players on the server (Europe) and i looked at the populations and all servers would be hard pressed to total 4000 players in all (according to the website stats). I figured this would have died by now.
Good game though, but outdated with the new ones. It is teh 2nd longest mmo i have played (the 1st being WoW), 3rd being EQ2.
If you think the game is outdated then I do not think you were playing the current game. You were probably playing the game with the old graphics that were in place instead of the ones that were in place now.
If by out of date you mean that the gameplay is different, it certainly is. Gameplay and character design since DAOC has become very simple and it looks like it is going to continue that way. It is a far more complicated game and deep that anything else on the market.

I still play, and have fun, but the game is dying hard. Servers (or now clusters) barely crest 1000 anymore, another cluster will need to happen soon.

No silly, Dead or Alive is a fighting game known for it's scantilly clad female protagonists. Ok wait . . . .
On topic, I miss this game, I've been wanting to resub and look around lately. Hmmm.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
Classic servers are still very much alive.
There are two kinds of people in this world. People who pick their nose.. and liars.

I played on both Perc and Guin and the pops are terrible.
Perc often is around 200ish players, and if it wasn't for the clusters you'd have little chance of seeing an other player.
Sad to see a great game die out, but everything has it's time - and DAoC's time has come and gone.
Still the best game that I ever played.......
