City of Heroes?

Can someone please answer some basic questions for me on this.

Can you go anywhere you want in this game?

Also is any of it instanced in areas, or do you get to play and fight with everyone at the same time? Like with games like Guild Wars you only meet people in towns, is this game like that?

What's the lvl cap in this game?

Yes, CoH is a huge city with alot of different area's. So it is very social, and very large.

There is a ton of instancing in CoH, damn near every mission you will run, or group runs, will be in an instance.

I believe the Lvl cap is 50... having a hard time recalling though, haven't played in about a year.

Good game though, very fun... even if only for a little bit. It's different, it was definetly worth my $40 when I played it.

So it's more like guild wars where once you leave the town you are playing on your own? Or is it like WoW where you get to play with people all the time?

Also is CoH and CoV the same game just with different characters?

Not exactly like Guild Wars, no.

In CoX you get missions, most of which take you into an instanced area to complete (you and anyone in your party that is.)  However, outside of the mission buildings the rest of the zone is opened up to and everyone else is together.  It's a bit more instance heavy than WoW but not as instance heavy as GW, if that makes sense.

CoH and CoV are very similar but there are some definite differences in the classes you can choose to play.  You can buy the Good vs. Evil edition of the game for something like $30 which includes both of the games together, and it is probably your best bet.  Some people like one over the other, others don't care either way, I'm of the latter group.  Both are good games and fun to play.

I've got to say I really enjoyed this game, not for long, but for the time I spent, it was fun.

Leaping from tall building to tall building made me let out a girlish 'eeek'... as did flight and super fast run speed "ala flash"

Definatly try it out, its a game you'll enjoy, even if for only a month or two.

Both games, COH and COV are complete stand alone games.  The trials you get ore for each one separately.  The zones are scaled for your level and some zones won't let you in until you hit a certain level.  As in WoW as you travel the zone you will find plenty  things too kill. you have access to everyone on your server and the chat channels will let you speak to any one on any server as long as they joined the same chat channel.  The missions are instanced for you and/or your group. there is a max of 8 per group. you can be sidekicked/lackeyed to a higher level person if you like and they in turn can be exemplered or brought down to your level if they choose to. there are always groups to be had and found. there are buildings called arenas that  allow pvp as well as 4 zones that are a pvp  hero vs. villain free for all. the arenas allow hero vs. hero and same for the villain side. in the next chapter called issue 10 there will be a zone that allows hero and villain team ups to help save the world. check out the games website for more on this.  pretty much all there is to the game. I've been playing since CoH luanched and beta'd CoV. both games are fun and can have it's downside as any game does.

if you go the trial route, do one then the other to see which one you like better.

Its not like either.  Most missions are in instances, but there are large cities you can street hunt in with all the people.  And there are big monster to be taken down in the city.  If you really wanted to you could level just by street hunting and never go into an instance.  So no it's not like guild wars at all.

The good thing about the instance thing is, finding a mission, and getter to a mission is super fast.  if you are like me and you HATE slow travel times between missions you will love it.

And instances scale to the size of your group, and you can raise or lower the difficulty (for a price).

You can solo but combat is a blast in a large team.  So if you like very slow travel times and soloing this may not be the game for you.  WoW would much better.

And some of us enjoy it for years and years.  I have tried many MMOs but I always go back to CoX.

But keep in mind I drink about 10 shots of espresso every day, so I need a fast past no nonsense game.

At least in the levels I have gotten to, the instances are mostly the insides of buildings, sewers, caves, etc.  The entrances to these instanced areas are all over the city zones, and you will only be able to enter them when you have picked up the mission to do so.  In all the outdoor areas (streets, rooftops, parks, etc), and in certain public buildings, you will be mixing with all the other folks in the zone.

There are also some missions that will take you to larger instanced areas that may consist of whole city blocks.

The outdoor public areas are rather crime infested and have plenty of mobs to tackle solo or with whomever happens to be passing by. Some of the missions you get will involve eliminating a certain number of these outdoor mobs, or you can just wander around and stamp out purse snatchers and such if you like.

Great game on the whole, even if you don't get much past the character creation stage.  Playing it solo is a bit dull in my opinion, but groups form quickly.

And as someone else said, if you like fast travel, you'll really like CoX.  At level 1 you can run at the speed of a mounted character in WoW.  Before you get to level 10, you can pick up a temporary jet pack, which lasts for two hours of use, and by level 14 you can get the power of flight.  If you don't want to fly, you can also choose super speed, teleportation, or super jumping.

You can go anywhere within the city exterior that you want in the game, except hazard zones. Hazard zones have minimum levels, so for example, you can't go into Terra Volta till you're level 21 or something like that. That's because it's too dangerous in there for a lower level character.
The regular zones (there are only a few hazard zones) where most people play the game and such, you can go to any of them without restriction, though again it isn't very wise to go into the level 40-50 zone as a level 10 or something. The villains there can one-shot you.
There is unlimited vertical movement if you have hover/fly, until you reach the "ceiling" at the top of the city... this is just slightly lower than the absolute tallest of skyscrapers in the game.
For all intents and purposes in COH, yes, you can go basically wherever you want (that has been mapped out by the devs, of course).
Also is any of it instanced in areas, or do you get to play and fight with everyone at the same time? Like with games like Guild Wars you only meet people in towns, is this game like that?
It is NOT like GW. GW has small areas where people meet, and the world is instanced. COH is the opposite. The world is static, but your own missions are private instances. As you travel through the city you will see lots of other heroes, and grouping is very easy and flexible. When your contact gives you a mission, that will usually be at a "door" somewhere in town. You fly/superjump/run to the mission's door, and when you click on it, you load into a "mission instance." That is private -- only you and people you invite into it can go inside.

And may I say... superjump is by far the most awesome power in the game. I used to spend hours just jumping all over the city, playing little games with myself like, starting from street level, could I bounce from spot to spot and end up on the tallest building in the zone? (You can, in every zone... but it takes some practice and some geometrical thinking.)

Nope, You can't go all places in this game. It's zone based so that ever zone is design to some level range. About 50% of zones has mininum level requirement limit.

All zones are permanent and the instancing is happening only in missions. Missions are basicly quests, what can be activated inside zone. Traveling is happening in zones, not in instances. Combat can also done in zones, but most people do missions, so it's little different than GW in that ways.

Level cap is 50. It will take a few months to reach to 50 for normal player.

PvE combat system is also better in CoH than GW. I think it's because GW is more a PvP game and COH is more PvE mmorpg. Other ways they have both a lot of same stuff. Character costume customation is really good in CoH.
