it seems like some of you are getting confused so let me rephrase it.

i solo.  in fact i solo alot.  i solo all the way to max lvl. i occasionally talk to people when im bored or pvp a little.  i even go to do raids or something similar to it depending on what game im playing. its ok to solo nothing wrong with it.  all i want to know is why people want more solo content in the game? i am not forcing anyone to group or do anything.  i just want peoples opinions to why they want more solo content in the game. i think that more focus should go to more group content since it is a massively multiplayer game.  that is my opinion and i want to hear everyone elses opinion.

if your just gonna bash my posts and say what an idiot i am or this is stupid and crap like that please do yourself a favor and go do something else with your free time. i am here to see other peoples opinions and ideas about my topic. if you dont like it dont worry about it.

The best answer I can give to why solo is: hanging out with people online is cool, playing with people can suck rocks sometimes.

one of the few times I actually grouped was in WoW for one of the earlier instances (I think it was the mine..too long since I've quit)..I was a pally and I got a fairly decent group together who was willing to follow my lead considering I'd laid out the plans and was willing to not roll on green drops other than strict pally gear. Against my gut instinct, just before we went into the instance I added another pally...half way thru when I tell him to switch to a different aura so we could cover some holes, he broke it to me he didn't choose any other auras and he wasn't planning to spend his skill points til closer to max level so he didn't even have heals. And he kept typing "LOL" the whole time he told me this. we let him die, dumped him, and wouldn't let him back in.

Kinda soured me on the whole PuG thing even tho we did finish the instance with very few problems.

  • Just because there's lots of people playing the game does not mean that people should be forced to play with others.  There is room for all types of playsyles in these game, and they shoud be catered to.  Every MMO should have some raids for those that truly enjoy raiding.  Every MMO should have small to mid-size group content for those that prefer that environment.  And finally, there should be solo stuff for those that want to solo or otherwise are not on at an ideal time to group.  In addition, every context should be just as rewarding as the other, and this is done through loot randomization that scales with the difficulty involved.  For example, uber sword of the deathgod should have a very very low percentage chance of dropping solo, a slightly higher chance of dropping in mid-size groups, and an even higher chance to drop for raids.  That's really all there is to it.  Pigeon holing people into specific styles (ala wow raids) does nothing but alienate your customer base and cut off a large amount of people from being able to advance in the game.

That aside, just because a game is multiplayer does not mean the player should be forced to play with others.  Other people being there is all that's necessary to give everyone the opportunity to play the game in the manner they determine most enjoyable to themselves.

People should stop forcing others to do what they want them to do in almost every aspect of life.  Someone soloing doesn't affect someone who likes to raid, so what possible right does the raider have to tell the soloer how to play the game?  People need to quit worrying about others and worry about themselves.

I solo because I have NO patience. And because I detest that when you do everything by commitee, like partying, EVERYTHING takes f o r e v e r to accomplish.

Before doing anything, everyone in the party has to take a pee, go raid the fridge, fight their little sister for the bathroom, answer the phone, get in a smoke break,. Or run back to the blacksmith for some better armor. When there's 7 or more people all doing this, even beginning an exp party is a grind.

I like to solo because all I have to rely on is me. I can do EVERYTHING at my own pace. And I don't have to worry about anyone else in the party slowing the leveling pace down.

    2. Todays mmorpgs aren't for grouping, they are designed for soloing. Communities have fallen from mmorpgs, they are shadows what they use to be.

Is it what I want? Nope, but mmorpgs designer make's it so.

One thing I will say about this.  I have played two different mmo's for over a year.  It usually takes me about 9 months to find a clan/guild/corp..etc that will "suit" my tastes.

This is not a bash against the other players.  It just takes time to find the players who are "suitable" for you...And with you.

I think that is the biggest issue with mmo's.  Alot of players don't have the patience to test the waters.

Solo is, after grouping, the most important gameplay in a MMO.

When a player log in; he is solo.  Even if he wants to group, he will enjoy soloint to some extand.

Some players will just love to solo and compete/compare to other soloers.

Solo is simple, it is easy to get it right...and everyone LFG can solo.

So...soloing is after grouping, the most important gameplay in a MMO.  PvP, Raiding, Tradeskills, you name it, it is nothing compared to solo.  Solo reaches every grouper, every raider, every PvPer...and of course it reach the hardcore undying solo-deathguards.  Due to it simplicity and the fact it reach more players then any other gameplay, it has to be well developped.  The only gameplay that take precedance over soloing, no matter what, is grouping.  Grouping is the central reason why peoples come to MMOs, so it is the only gameplay that may infrige on soloing if needed, however, ideally, grouping won't shaft soloing anymore then soloing would infriges on Grouping.

    Popularity of gameplays in MMOs:

    #1 = Grouping (PvE)

    #2 = Soloing (PvE)

    #3 = Grouping (PvP)

    #4 = Soloing (PvP)

Now, we would start considering tradeskills(under 10%)...and eventually raiding (under 5%)...so as you clearly see...soloing is indeed, after grouping, the most important gameplay in a MMO.

Forced grouping kills it for a lot of people.  You do realize if youre not a certain class or spec it's very hard to find a group in certain games (FFXI is a great example... note that I havent played in years).  You're saying it's a waste to do nothing but solo.  Isn't it also a waste to sit there for hours LFG waiting for an invite, or trying to start a group?  While leveling up in WoW I soloed 90% of the content till max level.  After that I grouped up or solo PvPed.  Really, it's all about what the player wants.  It's still MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER even when you solo.  You may run across other people, get ganked, help somoene, sell/trade items, whatever.  It's kind of like real life.  You don't go outside all the time and immediately find someone to hang with.  Some people are loners and some love company.  You cant expect everyone to like whatr you like.  If soloers think its worth their money then why shouldnt it be?

Not trying to "bash" you or your post, but your Original post did not mention what your "rephrase" post states.

Everyone responding to your original post were, in fact, answering what you ask for..."why solo?"

The responses gave reasons "why" they "solo". The vast majority did not "bash" you or call you an "idiot".

I find the responses very representative of why people solo in MMOs...

Sometimes it's hard to generate a decent party, it's nice to have some Solo stuff instead of waiting in town until you find a big enough party to complete a quest or go to a dungeon with you.

And it's rare for your whole party to stay for the whole quest or for the whole time you in the dungeon, unless playing with your friends.

Playing solo doesn't mean one never interacts with other people. While doing quests and fighting enemies solo, one can still reap the benefits of a multi-player game through chatting, trading and crafting.

Maybe more like going to a club or a concert alone, and with the intention of leaving alone, but socialising with people while you're there (and buying drinks of course).

Well, people want more solo content, because... they like to solo a lot and not run out of content doing so.

You may decide not to ever raid in endgame or grouping might just be giving your character unacceptable downtime... In that case, you'd appreciate it if the designers are bringing in new stuff to keep you busy (without pointless faction-grinding, hopefully).

Besides, I must say most of the "epic" deeds I have succeeded and still remember are indeed group-worthy work done solo :)

And why settle for one? The developers may come up with content for both solo and grouping... Ultimately, most people get to do both and thus, everybody wins.

i myself am not much of a soloer but i have played some mmos where soloing is actually better then teaming with people, the reason to this is because mmos arnt only for getting together with other people and doing things, its having a worthy enemy...

take wow for example, if you solo in that from 1-70 then decide never to talk to people simply pvp you could have urself a ball, join battlegrounds or simply world pvp to find enemies that u can /respect

I usually start playing an MMORPG many months after release.  For one reason or another I am always behind.  Anyway, I enjoy being able to solo because without solo leveling I am forced to group with alts.  Alts are some of the worst people to play with.  They are almost always know-it-alls (myself included) and there is no adventure.  Being able to solo allows me to figure out the game without being told by uncle knowsthestuff what to do.

Sometimes when you're in a group you're leveling really fast and you just breeze through the content.  When I solo I may pick up a few quests, read them carefully, and take my time completing them.

But when I'm in a group, I will often pick 10 or more quests, quickly scan the quest info and run out and complete quests in group fast as I can.  Many times, another member has already completed the quests, so the group of us are being led from quest to quest by a more experienced player instead of exploring and finding things on our own.

Sometimes I just log on after work, about midnight, and want to bang on stuff to relieve some stress.  I've already been up for 14 or 16 hours and I'm just trying to wind down for bed.  Playing solo is perfect for this.

It's kinda funny, but on mmo forums there are a few topics that continually come up over and over and over again.  One is why solo.  Another is casual vs. hardcore.  And yet another is why do you play a female avatar.  LOL.  Can't people just get over themselves and let people play they way they want.  If mmo's were not meant for solo play they would not include solo play.

    Why solo?

First off I don't play mmo's so I can group all the time, I play them for social interaction (when I want it).

You don't get that in single player games.

Lets face it folks, we like to show our characters off.. It's like a pissing contest that nobody cares about yet we still do it.

When I want to group, cool I got some folks I can talk to.

If you EVER watch general chats in any mmo you will understand that about half the populace is made of severe socially retarded folks.

    I'm one of those.
