Anyone who says video game addiction doesn't exist is in denial. People who are addicted to video games use them to get something they think they can't have in real life. In most cases I think it's a sense of accomplishment or self worth. Anyone can be someone in an online game, even if it's a fake someone.
This has nothing to do with the Internet or Video game. People dont need an excuse to hurt children it happens every min. People WANT or NEED an excuse like people posting here about "addiction" to the video games or Internet. Like do you sleep to much or find you like sleeping alot? Then you have BSD "Baby Sleeping Disorder". Its like OMG thats what I have.. I NEW something was wrong with me. But in reality its just people not wanting to do or act on there own just to lazy to stop. You say something to someone over and over and long enough you can make them believe it. There are people in this world that DO have problems and need help. But for some with drinking or smoking or eating NO ONE but NO ONE makes us do these things and WE can stop if WE choose to. I've seen it to many times. People smoking for 30years and drinking quit in one day. We just get enough people around that say they CANT do it and others will follow saying the same thing. Now some of the things I talked about are very hard to stop and some can stop on there own and others cant. You want to cry and whine about "video game addiction"? See its the "I cant stop" a childish thing that we stamp on it "ADDICTION". There are REAL addictions out there and this is not one of them. These two that hurt there children had to come up with something so its.. we couldnt stop playing video games we were addicted to them. We can say what we want but in the end we will answer for it all by our self. Sorry but your just like most of us here. NO ONE makes YOU do ANYTHING you DONT want to do.
Hell, I feel guilty for putting off my 2yr olds lunch a few mins, while I finish a quest or two.
The cops should take away all the electronics in the house as evidence, as well as the kids, and never give them back. We'll see how they feed their addiction then!
Punish them futher by making PS3 the only thing they can play! lol
Myself, I'm addicted to gaming, but I can't seem to get addicted to nicotine.
This is because I'M weak towards mental stimulation but not physical stimulation.
This doesn't make Games addictive and 'bad'
Heck people are also addicted to
Food
Sun
Alcohol
Exercise (and steroid in some cases)
Watching sports
Watching TV in general
Flowering
Studying
Music
Sex
Attention
Aaaaaand everything else you can think of..
So, well, those idiot parents should
A) Not have games
or
Not have kids
This does in no way affect ANYONE else other than them, as it's THEIR addicted personalities that matter and not WHAT they're addicted to
Definition of addiction:
Compulsive physiological need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal; broadly : persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be physically, psychologically, or socially harmful.
It was therefore long thought that you couldn’t be an addict, unless an actual drug was involved. It is only “recent” that we have acknowledged things like gambling, extreme sport and some competitive gaming, releases the same drugs in your brain and body, which some addictive drugs also do.
You should of listed the other definitions as well.
They are not all the same. Some definitions use a narrow "drugs/alcohol" example to describe addiction while others imply that an addiction is any act in which a person is complied to do over and over again such as gambling addiction.
One gives a narrow definition the others give a much broader definition that is not stereotypical of what people generally think is considered to be an addiction.
You should really try to read my whole post… now, have we quoted each other enough, or should we continue arguing something that looks like we basically agree on?
I think these parents are horrible but... Comparing video game players to meth heads (very end of article) is simply ridiculous.
I am sure there are people who do meth that are "functional" in life. I would like to say that I doubt there are many. But for gaming this is quite the opposite. Most people who play video games are "functional" and few are like these morons.
Comparing being a meth head and playing video games is just plain ignorant.
I find the fact they are addiced to D&DO more shocking then the fact they neglected their children

From the story:
"While child abuse because of drug addiction is common, abuse rooted in video game addiction is rare, Viloria said."
Crap like this is out there. I've seen it first-hand. I'm not going to say that most MMORPG players are addicts, but there are some truly addicted players out there and there are more than the typical attitude of this forum reflects.
I was going to make a comment about Fox, but I think this says it all. Fox is well known for spinning stories well beyond the boundaries of "truth" to make them more sensationalist and shocking. I would take everything they say with a grain of salt.

Suuuuure......, because the other channels certainly aren't biased, are they?
We all know reality has a well known liberal bias.

And about Fox News, try to see this little documentary" http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6737097743434902428&q=War+On+Journalism&total=341&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0 ", and if you don’t believe that, try to open your eyes and look around yourself. Its painfully obvious how Fox News is being run.
