How on earth can they figure out that the average AoC player will play 900 hours? Even if the game is a success, an average of 900 hours is a massive number for any MMO.
The 900 hours comment was made during the gamespot E3 stage show.

At 5 hours a day thats 6 months.. so yea the average player would have to play a year.
If you are going to make a post ike this please put things in context. It creates less flaming and fuss over things that shouldnt be garnering such attention.
No, they were specifically talking about "we make games which need to last for about 900 hours", and they said that the average gamer will be playing for 10 months. This is an almost impossible average since a lot of players quit MMOs after under 24 hours into the game, or within their first month of play. If they were talking about fairly long term MMO players that enjoy AoC, 900 hours would be somewhat realistic, but not as an average for everyone who picks up an AoC box.
Some will ofc play less then 900 and others much much more=)
But I think 900hrs per year sounds about right, in my experience.
I don't think he's saying that.
Hmm.... 900 hours is about 37 days played...... all 5 of my alts in WOW meet or exceed that number (some are more like 100 days) and my son has a mage that's close to 200 days played...
Doesn't seem like a bad average, and they are tossing out the players who join and quit in a month from the "average".....

I could play that 900 hours in 2-3 months the way I play. The number is nothing more than an average based on how much content is in the game and how much time the average player will play for.

Well they also said that AoC's world will be 185 Square Miles which more or less confirms what was said earlier - compared to WoW's size of about 80 Square Miles. But these are square miles full of features and things to do. So spending - if your mr/mrs average playing 900 hours -3 hrs per day - or 300 days - or 43 weeks - or 10 months or whatever there will be plenty of content to fill your time up.
Its not cockiness its what the indstry thinks, the makers of tabula rasa have said the same time too.
Of course there will always be expansions and new content to keep you going, this is an mmo afterall/

Wait so your sayingf they should be designing there game planing that most people will hate it and stop in the 1st month? Uh no thats not good bussiness sense they are designing the game in hopes that most everyone who trys it will like it and will stay with it. So taken the people that actully like the game will stay with the game design it with plenty of content so they won't work thruogh it all to fast and get bored. If they design it with only about a months worth of content no matter how good it is or how much people like it will die in a month since everyone will play through it and be done with it. So not designing it with the idea that people will like it and want to play it and therefore need lots of content would be idiotic from a business sense. Is it cocky no way it's just smart business sense based on the average time gather from the average length of active accounts on other games not the ones who just quit right after they try it.

Exactly, my friend!
I'm an administrator in a succesful cybercafe, let me tell you that the average "days played" for about every single WoW player who plays there is 100 days. I myself have several characters, when I add their playtime together comes about to 80 days.
So there you go, people at Funcom were actually being modest in their estimates. If the game is half as good as it promises to be, I'm looking at least that amount (900 hours) of time playing the game.

Now read what you just quoted. "we make games which need to last for about 900 hours"
That means they make a game with at least 900 hours of gameplay, so that whether you're casual or a hardcore player, there will be enough content to last for at least a year. They are not saying that you have to play 900 hours, or even that you will.
I swear, was Barney a repeat episode today?
yeah if u play 5 hours a day it would only take u 47.36 days to reach 900(if i did the math right not shure)
heres what i did
1)theres 24 hours in a day and if u play 5 hours that would be 24-5=19
19=the hours left in the day after u play for 5 hours
2) u take 900/19=47.37
47.37=how many days it would take to = 900hr wile playing for 5 hours a day
pretty shure my logic was correct on this
Simpler: 365 days a year (not counting leaps) x 5 hours a day = 1825 hours played.
So 900 hours = less than 6 months of gameplay at 5 hours a day.
Simpler: 365 days a year (not counting leaps) x 5 hours a day = 1825 hours played.
Lets us not forgot they want it to appeal to the older gamer too who might have a family / other things in life to do and can't put 5 hrs a day into a game. So 3 hours per day on average is far more realistic when you think about it.
Actually the math isn't correct. The way you did it says you are playing for 19 hours a day. 900/5 is 180. It would take you 180 days to hit 900 hours played if you played for 5 hours a day.

fine. 365 x 3 = 1095 hours.
And I'm pretty sure they want it to appeal to alot more than one demographic.

And an old school gamer who has a career and a daughter now.My point is that the game is meant to appeal to all types of gamer. And no matter which type you are, the math says 900 hours is nowhere near a ridiculous number.
And the OP needs to think things out before he spouts off about things that are open to easy rebuttal through minimal research.
People work and have responsibilities. So taking that into consideration 900 hours seems correct.
