When I started the EvE online trial is was not really looking for a new game. I currently play EQ2 and I am quite happy with it. The reason I decided to try the trial is that I recently started TIVOing Stargate SG1. The later episodes are a lot more space oriented and it kind of renewed my love of Sci Fi which I have always had, I had simply let it wain since I have been playing all fantasy MMO's. I have only been playing for about 2 days but I don't think its hard to get a handle on if you like the core of a game or not after that amount of time. Anyway, on the the good stuff. Anyway, On to the good stuff.
The good.
Accessibility - I don't understand why people say this game is so hard to get into. Sure, If you skip the tutorial and refuse to ask any questions then yeah, you are probably going to be lost. However after playing the tutorial and asking a few people a couple questions I had no problem jumping in and playing. Am I a expert? No, but any one that expects to jump into any game and be a instant expert is going to have issues.
Community - I found the community helpful and mature. I asked quite a few questions in general chat and promptly got quality answers to them. I had one response that was something like "LOL, let me guess, your WoW server down? LOL" And that was actually replied to by a few people in general chat with something akin to "STFU" and then those people answered my question. Overall I would rate the community high.
Customization / Options - This may not hold true for everyone however I am a tweaker. The more options the better. This game = OMFGWTFBBQ. Wait a sec, your telling my there are 20 differnt highbrid turrets that I can mount and THEN I can load them with NINE differnt kinds of ammo. Yeah, Give me some more of that! So far this has got to be my favorite feature of the game. There is so much stuff you can bolt on a ship (Of which there are also TONS of ships). This game is a tweakers wet dream.
Graphics - I am not a graphics guy. I am all about the game play. One of my all time favorite games was a BBS game called Tradewars. 99 percent text with a little asci art thrown in. I didn't care because the game play was good. EvE has good graphics. They do a good job of making you feel like you really are in space.
The Pace - This is a double edged sword. I love it, others will hate it. This is what I am talking about. There seem to be stuff you can do (Like mining) that don't really require a lot of attention. Some may call this boring. Me on the other hand kind of like it. I can start minning in a safe area and then pretty much not pay attention for a few mins. Then when my hold are full I auto pilot back to the station, dock, reload and repeat. I actually made a pretty decent amount of cash yesterday mining for 3 hours all while running a EQ2 raid. Now if you are in low sec space or running missions this probably isnt the best idea, but for minning I think it is great.
Ok, Now on to the bad.
All that customization has a downside - The sheer number of addons and weapons can be overwhelming for a new player. What I really wanted to see on the market menu is some sort of filter that was something like "Only show the shit I can use". This would help new players quite a bit.
A little bit of guidance on skills - It would really be nice if they gave you a gentle nudge in the right direction. The game could ask you something like "Do you want to fight, trade, mine, etc?" and then after you select could maybe suggest a few skills to start training to push you in that direction.
Honestly, that all the bad I have really found so far. There will probably be more but so far I am having a great time. If it keeps up for the full 14 day trial I can't see myself not subscribing. It will probably not become my main MMO but it will probably be running most of the time on my laptop when I am playing EQ2 on my desktop.

All points are agreed with excluding the skill guide bit at the end.

For the skill suggestions a lot of people use the program evemon to help plot the skills they need for various items and ships. it has a sortable item and ship browser that lets you toggle options for the tech levels and named/faction items.
As for any other skill suggestions the massive amount of options means that you can't come up with a easy skill guide for anything. each skill plan has to be custome set for race and goal. As such CCP relies on the players to fulfill that role, so feel free to ask what we'd suggest for what your trying to do. If I'm online feel free to convo me if you need a bit more immediate help.
Yep EVEMON is a phenomenal tool that any vet of EVE will highly recommend. There's even been noise among players wondering if CCP might eventually wrap EVEMON into the game. The DEVS already work very closely with the EVEMON guys to make sure EVEMON gets the right information they need to keep the tool running properly even after big updates to the game DB's that would break it otherwise.

Nice to hear that you are enjoying yourself.
Regarding skills I made it simple, back then when I started EVE. I looked up what I wanted to be able to fly and back traced the skills I would need (from the "Required Skills" Tab). About 30 to 60 minutes of "work", and you got your skill training plan for the next 4 to 8 months. Dont ever forget the "support skills" though. Those are the skills that allow you to fit and fly your ship a lot more efficient. The most important/basic are: Engineering, Electronics, Energy Management, Energy Systems Operation, Navigation, High Speed Maneuvering, Hull Upgrades, Electronics Upgrades.

you go tthat right. thats also a part of the game i love. wait till your sitting there wraking your brain digging through the market to find that one module thats close in stats to one on your ship but takes up 1 or 2 less CPU so you can swap that n-type hardener out for the t2 one

SOOO true it isn't funny. Even later on when you have much better fitting skills - its all about that 1 or 2 cpu for the best fit possible

yup there is even a skill for turrets to take 2% less powergrid to fit lolAnd I'm glas you didn't find it too complex, that's kinda the player filter eve has for better or worse. Plus you have learned why most people in the EvE communty play more than just eve online. it's so easy to make low risk low reward money while our skills train for you!
eve is my scifi fix, I got other games for everything else.
and just to pressure it, yes use EVEMON, the eve-online API project allows for programs like this one to use your data using a API username and passwords to get data form you without being able to in any way ever get your game account username and password.
in other words a seperate little data bank holding tone of in-game data but just that. just data. you can find this all under my chacrater on the eve site.
Well, I am on day 4 of the trial and still having a blast. The first 2 days I stuck mainly to mining so I would have time to train some skills up and make a bit of ISK for some decent equipment. Go into to running missions yesterday. Was pretty fun. Lost my first ship. That wasn't fun. Anyway, this game reminds me VERY much of the mech warrior series for PC. Not so much in game play but in the customization. Anyone that has played the games knows what I am talking about. I used to spend HOURS in the mech lab tweaking designs and building custom mechs. Loved every bit of it. This is probably part of the reason I am having so much fun in EvE. Same type of expirence but even more deep.
