Questions of Conan

safwdsafwd Member Posts: 879

I was really not very interested in this game but the more i read about it and saw videos the more interested i have become. I have a few worries about it though and thought i would post a couple questions for those of you who have been following the game closely.

1. Are the PC requirements going to be as intense as Vanguards are? I can play Vanguard (Barely) with the PC i have, I do plan on upgrading quite a bit by the end of the year though. I am a little afraid that Conan is going down the same road Vanguard did and is creating a game that a small population of gamers can actually play.

2. Will this game actually make it out by the end of this year? I think they just opened up Beta invites so a September release seems a bit quick.

3. This is my most important question and the one that worries me the most. The mature rating scarred me a little bit at the beginning, now we have blood, severed heads etc, and now they have stated in a video that there will be partial nudity in the game (i.e. topless women and perhaps even topless avatars). Now i have no problem with these things but im afraid that hey might be the death of the Conan community. These aspects of the game are not going to draw the mature players as much as they are going to draw the kids. Now im not trying to start a fight here with the kiddie talk. Im just very afraid that the world of Conan will be full of 15 year old boys who have created women so they can run around topless.

And please dont say it has a mature rating so teens should not be playing it, we all know that that is a crock. I know how old i was when i saw my first R rated movie and i have teenage kids so i know that doesnt hold water.

Anyway, just some questions and concerns. It does look like it could be a very cool game. And i need one badly since Vanguard does not seem to be working out. I have played pretty much all the big ones and sadly have found nothing that keeps my interest since EQ1 and DAOC. I have hopes for Conan and perhaps to a lesser extent Warhammer. Only time will tell.

Answer for question # 1. According to there E3 2007 interview they replied saying " If your computer can handle Oblivion which seemed to have a large fan base, your computer can handle Conan. They tried to keep the spects close to oblivion because the graphics on that game were sweet!!"

Answer for question # 2 Release isn't september its october 30th as of right now.

Answer for question # 3 Well lucky for you that from age 1 - death All males love boobs so if you have 15 yr olds you will also have 30 year olds looking for the boobs to play the game. Ahh well straight males at least.

yes, i saw the part about Oblivion, i havent played Oblivion though. I would just hate to see Conan in the state Vanguard is in because the requirements were way too high. Yes, i know that is not the only problem with Vanguard, and probably not even the biggest by far anymore.

Yes, October not September my bad. Question still holds true though i think. 3.5 months until release and they are just now sending BETA invites still seems a bit tight.

As for 3. Liking boobs and dancing around on mailboxes all day for tips (cough WoW Blood Elves cough) are not he same things. I will certainly not run away from a topless female avatar but i wont be making one to play either. I could be way off but im guessing that the percentage of topless women in the game of Conan being played my males will be much higher then the percentages being played by women. And i would also bet that same percentage of males will be under the age of say 17. Im just praying that we dont have a whole world that reminds me of the Barrens.

Well the problem with Vanguard is that it was made thinking everyone in the world has a Fast CPU, The most expensive gpus in sli mode and 4+gigs of ram. Damn game wants a super computer because of all the bugs from it not being completed at release. If u have a geforce 6800+ or equivilant you should be fine. because if u have a gefore fx series or equivilant ur in trouble reason i had to upgrade my pc. it did not want to play oblivion on any setting. But i upgraded so i think now im able to turn on a little bit of the bells and whistle on AoC and be happy with my performance. Funcom is a Respectable company they don't tend to release unfinished work. AO played good on my Piece of crap computer of the time running a voodoo 2 so i know AoC will be ok for a computer that had part in it from 2004+.

Regarding Issue #3:  Well, I'll admit (as a 36-year-old male), nudity in AoC sounds fine to me if it's done well.  But, I imagine it will be a turn-off to many female players if all the nudity is huge-breasted females, and the guys are neatly packaged away.  Not that the female players necessarily want to see Conan in the buff (maybe some do, I don't know), but it would smack less of "fodder for hormonal teenage boys" if the nudity were evenly used, and if perhaps all of the women didn't have enormous breasts in the pre-cosmetic surgery historical period of Conan.  I was in a guild with at least 5 very active female players, and I have doubts about how interested they'll be in some female nudity that is just gratuitous and stupid.  Realism is realism.   If all the women look like a cross between Zena and Pamela Anderson, we'll know Funcom is just looking for some cheap thrills instead of staying true to a gritty world.  If at least some of the nudity is grotesque, it will better serve the darker AoC concept, and the less mature players probably won't bother entering the world if it's only to get their nipple fix.  I think I understand one of the OPs points, that the mature rating/content itself may make the AoC community less mature.  If the game turns out as good as I expect, I hope there's a good community to go with it.

Eh, though your right I doubt we will see that. Would be nice for the ladies though IMO too, but can you honestly say a MMO is keeping the female opinion in mind?

I've posted this already on this forum, but just in case you didn't catch it, i'll post it again.

There is a link in the 1st post of this thread..  Reason I didn't directly link you to the site itself is because there is some interesting info scattered throughout the thread itself.

If your computer can run The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion™ test, you should be ok.  (as many other people have said before me)

    Hope this helps.

None that I'm aware of.  I guess any shrewd manufacturer/marketer knows his customer well. It's undeniable that the large majority of PC gamers are male, so it's not surprising that it's (currently) a small risk to turn away some potential female customers in order to pull in a much larger group of hungry males.  -- sorry, drifting off topic!

Ok hers my shot at these questions.

    1.  Vanguard wasn't a well coded game.  Sony is doing alot to try and clean it up, but you cant make Chicken Salad out of Chicken Sh%t.   I can build a PC with 450 bucks that will play Age of Conan.

    2. Anyone that has waited for a Funcom game befor knows their Beta's are almost totaly IN house.   They'll have like a 1-2 week Open Beta, No More.  They are exeptional coders.  They make a quality product, and this time they are producing something with a GREAT storyline and appeal.   Funcom has stood behind their Octobers 30th Release dates in  dozens of interviews over the past few months, and see no reason why they wouldn't push it back if they think it won't release.  Instead they keep selling the date of Octobers 30.

    3.  I think that the kids will get a real kick  out if it at first, but eventualy it'll grow old.   I think this games nature has drawn the attention of a lot of PvP and Hardcore gamers,  because of this, it's community will be mostly these people.   I don't see this game being any different then the same Hardcore PvPer types we're all used to.

Yeah you can tell how awesome the funcom coders are by the stellar AO launch.  For those with short memories let me see hrmm..

Funcom's ground-breaking role-player has finally gone live. Can it compete with the big boys? Chris Anderson checks out AO's first week online and finds more questions than answers

Let's be honest. Nobody expected Anarchy Online's launch to go smoothly. Traditionally, online RPGs have been plagued with problems of enormous magnitude in the first couple of months of release, and in some cases, way beyond that. Ultima Online was almost unplayable when it was first released, with huge lag problems and bugs of all shapes and sizes. EverQuest was similar (even two years down the line, Verant is still 'fixing' things that should have been addressed before launch).

In light of this, the furore surrounding Anarchy Online's release is understandable yet predictable. Yes, there are bugs, and plenty of them, but unlike Ultima Online's early days, AO offers an experience which looks promising, despite the problems in one very important area (see the Freeze boxout).

To give you some idea of the magnitude of the problems facing AO, Funcom extended the period of 'free' time in the game to many subscribers, as it felt the product it had released was not sufficiently playable to warrant taking cash from its customers. While this is commendable, the mind boggles as to why it didn't just hold the release and fix the problems. It's not as if Funcom didn't know the problems existed. The Anarchy Online website turned into nothing more than a huge flame war between Funcom and hugely disgruntled subscribers.

    --------- END--------

Now I sure hope they learned something since that day long ago, but it does not exactly scream great coding to me.

Considering I was there,  I was one of the people who got the extra 15 days play time for free!!! WOOT.   I also was there for UO's Release.   I was playing AO, it had bugs, but I was playing and I was playing consistantly.   AO was So radiculously beyond its time I didnt even care about the lag.    In comparison to EVERY other game I've played it was a much smother launch.  City of Hero's had the most sucessful launch of any MMO.  Nearly entirely bug free.   Don't bash CoH because you didnt like the game.  It was masterfuly build and executed.

SOmething HUGE to consider is the state of most internet connections.   Half of AO's problem wasn't as much a problem with the game,  rather their ISP.   To say that they don't write quality code because of Lag,  is just an uneducated, uninformed,  thing to say.  I think your input here was just a horrible Troll attempt.

  • FE|TachyonFE|Tachyon Member UncommonPosts: 652

I also wanted to add that just because a company stands behind a game isn't a bad thing.   Funcom did something NO other game did.  It stood behind its product, and offered its customers exeptional customer service.

  • JarloJarlo Member Posts: 221

Yeah sorry that post was a bit "Trollie" but I just had to laugh when someone says how awesome funcom's releases have been in the past when AO was one of the most horrible releases in MMO history.  They certainly have done a good job since then but it still has to make one a bit nervous about AOC and them releasing in October.

And Funcom is far from the only company to give free time due to bugs.  EQ1 did this as well and I know some others did just can't pin down which ones in my memory... DAOC I think.

The funny thing is I am looking forward to this game more than any other game but the rabid fanboys wil not allow any criticism or complaint to slide in without jumping to the defense of their beloved Funcom.  I really hope I'm wrong and it is released as polished and fun as COH was but I really doubt it.  I'll cross my fingers though!
