I am very aware that most, if not all, of the SWG vets here have read this post, and I'm sure there are a number of new players that havn't. For those new guys, this is one reason I'm posting it. The other is that, despite having played the game since March '04 until Dec '05, I have never read this.
From Nancy MacIntyre, senior director of Star Wars Galaxies at LucasArts:
"We really just needed to make the game a lot more accessible to a much broader player base ... There was lots of reading, much too much, in the game. There was a lot of wandering around learning about different abilities. We really needed to give people the experience of being Han Solo or Luke Skywalker rather than being Uncle Owen, the moisture farmer. We wanted more instant gratification: kill, get treasure, repeat. We needed to give people more of an option to be part of what they have seen in the movies rather than something they had created themselves."
Dear lord. Too much reading? God forbid we would ever want people to read. Especially the younger audience they are attracting. If the kids read, they might get smart, and if they get smart, they will post more of those long topics with big words on the SOE forums telling them how bad a job they have done.
And a lot of learning about different abilities? Yeah, who the hell would want to know how their character works anyways!? Much better to pick something at random and wing it.
Kill, get treasure, repeat. Kill, get treasure, repeat. Kill, get treasue,.... okay, since I am almost %99.9 positive that not a single person ever asked for this kind of game before the NGE, I'll ask you new guys. Sound like fun? Perhaps a little repetitious? Maybe even boring, right?
Oh, and QFE, because this is my absolute favorite part of it:
...to be part of what they have seen in the movies rather than something they had created themselves.
...
...
...
Wha...?
Huh...?
Erm...?
...
She really said that, didn't she?
...(for emphasis)
Wow. Even my sarcasm comes to a "screeching into a brick wall" halt on this one. To me it says "Don't be yourself, be that guy over there. No, not that one. That one. The one standing next to the other guys that look exactly the same. Yeah, him"
Perhaps an appropriate analogy would be if you took every color TV, from super HDTV 1080p 72" with $11,000 price tag to the 13" hand-me-down your brother gave you when he joined the Navy, and all that great digital programming from DirectTV or whatever, and took it all away. Then, a creepy used-car salesman-looking guy walks up to your front door with a small black and white TV and a steel anteanna, declaring that we have now three exciting channels that show news, weather, and I Love Lucy reruns.
If it did happen, I'd have my shotgun next to the door.
Heaven forbid somebody has a passion for something they create. And doubly so if we would ever want our young generation to create things. Besides, what has time and dedication to our creations ever given us?
The Landscapes of Claud Monet...the Barcelona Cathedral...the personnal computer.
Who the hell needs that kind of crap, right? Am I right?
*Sigh.* Anyways, the audacity and udder rediculousness of this statement, as well of this paragraph, has had me banging my head against the wall with questions, laugh at the stupidity, and weeping over what the product of our young generation, even our own children, will become with people like Nancy MacIntyre guiding them through their development of life.
And as a final note, for everyone out there saying "The skill tree system was broken, iconic classes are way better, NGE FTW!!!111", just remember, this is the person you are representing, you are supporting, and you ... will hopefully not become.
Anyways, I just had to get all of that off my chest.

nothing like digging up a 2yr old gripe
Playing and enjoying, nay...LOVING, something I create by my own hands with my own mind = bad.
Playing something identical (hense uncreative, unpersonalized, devoid of pride) to what everyone else is playing = good.
See! I get it! Why don't you? Oh...sorry. I've used too many words. (Bad! BAD WORDS!) Sorry...
How DARE they. Seriously...I'm not a violent person, but I could almost slap someone for releasing such a statement and believing that their customer base (aka: me) knows less about what I want than they do.

Nancy McIntyre is truly an enigma. How can someone with that little understanding of both the product and the customer be given the position of doing PR for it?
Her remarks ALONE probably cost LEC/SOE a million dollars in lost revenue.
I feel emberassed for her statements, really...
"You must be either retarded or a fanboi..."
The worstest fact is , they messed up and gone ...except Smed....
hence i would still play SWG , but they broke the game and left ....without any apology to what they have broke and done (Tora Torres, Illiterate Nancy , Arrogance Heliass etc; maybe a little exclusion here Jeff talked to us at least)

$OE - eternal enemy of online gaming
-We finally WON !!!! 2011 $OE accepted that they have been fired 2005 by the playerbase and closed down ridiculous NGE !!

Not sure I'm really digging it up, as the gripe has been there since NGE-Day.

Does anyone else see the irony in this post? Not a bad post but this made me laugh
"Great minds discuss ideas, lesser minds discuss things, and shitheads get personal."
As long as i make those errors in my second foreign language i am not that worried , sure a bit but not much. And unlike Nancy i like to read many many words.

Not an attack on you my friend.
"Great minds discuss ideas, lesser minds discuss things, and shitheads get personal."
I've thought the same thing myself over the years. She alone lost them thousands of subs, just by that one statement.
C
I dont pay attention to Nancy.. too much reading involved to listen to her.. Im sure she wont mind.
Nancy "Readin is bad m'kay" McIntyre is now working for a educational aimed company.
Oh the irony.
The last of the Trackers
Nicely done!

And she got PROMOTED not long after it as well!
LEC management must work like the company Initech in "Office Space", where the capable get fired and the useless get promoted.
No one who has taken even ONE class in PR or marketing would have said the things she did (insulting their entire customer base), even if that WAS LEC's opinion of the game and the player base.
About the only way it makes sense is if you believe in the theory that LEC/SOE had given all of us up for dead, didn't give a crap if any or ALL of us left, because we were going to be replaced with far more than our numbers in new players who DIDNT want to read, DIDNT want a complex (or even mildly challenging game) and who wanted to be Luke Skywalker instead of his own character.
Personally, I think that is really what the NGE was all about. A total player base replacement. They probably thought that we'd either like it or else slip away quietly.
Of course Nancy must have been AWOL the rest of PR 101 as well, since she clearly missed the lecture that would have taught her that a PISSED OFF customer is NINE TIMES more likely to tell others about their experience than a SATISFIED one is! They should have known what they were getting themselves in for, yet they chose to plunge ahead anyway.
I think the NGE was the perfect storm of bad management. The management was so bad they were able to construct a complete alternate reality bubble around themselves and COMPLETELY ignore everything except their own completely wrong conclusions. They didn't SEE any evidence that should have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the NGE would fail miserably (and emblazon a scarlet letter upon each of them) because their alternate reality bubble didn't let any of that in.
Seriously, I think some of them likely had nervous breakdowns when reality finally smashed them in the head. Indeed, Chris "I had a" Cao seemed to have one publically when he posted his infamous "FU" message on the forums.
