Came back and I wanted to like it and tried to like it

It's been so long since I played the original that I barely remember what it was like, so I thought the time was right to try the current version now that I've heard some good things about it.

I really wanted to like it and have tried as much as I can endure to like it, but the game irritates me to the point that I get angry and physically ill while playing it, something only the Roma Victor beta has managed to do before it.

I kept playing in spite of this though, trying to pinpoint what felt wrong and if I could ignore it and enjoy the game anyway, but it has such a bad effect on my mood that I have to put it down.

I think I've narrowed down some sources of frustration:

Combat:

*NPCs do this ridiculous burstsprint back and forth where their legs move at 200mph and then they slow down to a halt, before burstsprinting again.

*Autofire feels ackward. I've tried to figure why, but it just feels outlandish and weird. I'd much prefered having more buttonmashing attacks instead and your guy not doing anything if all your actions where on cooldown. It's like the "wanding" in Guild Wars only at a much higher rate and combat hardly last longer than a fart. You probably have alot more options at lvl 90, but I'm not lvl 90, I'm in the teens and I have weeks if not months of grinding ahead of me with what is mashing two special attacks and watching my guy autofire people to death. That's not a game. That's an interactive screensaver. Or, well, it sort of reminds of Auto Assault now that I think about it.

*Looting. You killed something, walk over to loot it. "You're in combat!" No I'm not. You try again. "You're in combat!". There isn't a microbe alive in that damned desert and I'm in combat with a corpse for what ironically is a longer period of time than it actually takes to kill the damned guy.

Animations:

*When something dies it plays a 3 frame animation from its combat stance and straight into a pile on the ground. Come on. The game has been out for what now, 5 years? And they still can't make a death animation? Every time something dies I think of that horrible trailer to Dark and Light with the Satyr and some sort of animal fighting, where they have a 1 frame attack animation and just suddenly appear dead on the ground. It feels cheap and soulless.

Space:

*Missions consist of patroling empty space forever. Why on earth would I play a twitch-based shooter to autorun back and forth all the time? I might as play Eve Online where I can go between patrol waypoints on autopilot. Even alt-tabbing appears to throw you of course so you have to be ingame and wait for something to happen. I expected to be told to "fly to point A to fight enemy B" and that would have been allright, but not "fly to A, B, C, D, back to A, then check out C again, and then fight." For someone who's played games long enough to recognize a timesink when he sees it, this is like spitting in his face.

*Combat is counterintuitive. The tutorial tells you to lead your shots, and that's to be expected. Of course you should lead your shots. Then you get into combat, target an enemy and you get a fixed crosshair on him which is two full ships lengths ahead of him. If you lead ahead of his graphical appearance, you will hit him and see his shields flare, but he won't take damage. If you lead ahead of the crosshair which is ALREADY leading ahead, then you hit empty space, you watch your beams disappear in space and the ship takes damage. Great. Talk about killing any sense of immersion.

Camera:

*The camera angle will be based on an over-the-shoulder point of view. It's not for everyone and I would to be right behind in center, but I can't find where to enable this feature. I would expect this to be customizeable from somewhere, but that's besides the point because it wasn't blatantly obvious and as such I was stuck with another minor, but annoying issue. It all adds up for the total experience >.<

Chat:

*Everyone and their grandmother has something to say be it to themselves, to the wall or to their imaginary friends, and they make sure to repeat themselves if you stick around to fight or hang out near them. Again, I expect you're able to block out NPC spam from some option, but if I do that it leaves me at a disadvantage when I actually need to read what they've said to me. More frustration.

Conclusion:

I resubbed SWG because I was in the MMORPG mood again, but I think SWG tries too hard to feel like a fps shooter without actually delivering, and apart from the other issues, this is something I keep having in the back of my head: "Why don't I just return to PlanetSide if I want a MMOFPS?" And I don't return to PS, because I don't want a MMOFPS right now.

Crafting was always the best part of SWG, what set it apart from the competition, and what made it worth playing even from the combat professions' perspective. So to get something out of my one month sub I'll try that next time I feel up to relogging, but anyway, that's my thoughts and I had to vent the frustation in the form of this post. If it can be put to constructive use, cool, but if you want to rip into me in a defensive reaction, feel free.

At least you tried AranStormah .. And I am sorry it did'nt work out for you

Mass Multi Online Role Playing Games will have different outcomes for different people. This is what makes mmo's so unique. I stated in a prior message that MMO's today have definetly evolved since the ole Ultima Online days, we have more 'First Player Shooter customers playing MMO's than we ever did'. World of Warcraft opened a new market and addiction to MMO's. Alot of people like to 'SOLO' a MMO, this has defiently changed since the golden days on mmo's where everything was group based and just having fun with your friends online chatting with people to see what is out there. Leveling was'nt much of a concern, as long as you had fun leveling.

What I consider Pioneering games in the MMO universe would be games like Ultima Online, Everquest, Eve Online, DAoC, Asherons Call, Final Fantasy, Lineage. Anarchy Online and SWG. These games introduced Excellent Ideas and thats why we go some very successful mmo games out there now.

The newer generation of MMOS were either City of Heros, Guild Wars (okay I know its not a Huge MMO, but this game got is fan base), Lord of the Rings and World of Warcraft. No offense to people that play these games, cause I played them as well, but definetly dumbed down MMO's. Everything is catered to you. They are simple to get into, simple to understand and got a nice addiction to them as well for a different client base. Quests are handed to you on a silver plate.

The reason SWG is judged so hard is because, outside MMORPGing, we all LOVE -- STAR WARS -- whether were playing the FPS, RPG or MMORPG versions of this franchise, we are going to have ALOT more critics on what Star Wars should be like and more happy and pissed customers as the same time. EXAMPLE.. Say I have having a FANTASTIC time playing SWG, for whatever reason, there is going to be that person out there thats going to say, Why in the Hell you still Play that POS. Whether  its SWG, WOW, Eve, COv etc etc..

There will never be a MMORPG that everyones going to love, you may be on the majority of haters or lovers on some, but the game is what it is.

When SWG was even released in 2003, it carried many  bugs and exploits. It was cursed for being released to quickly to the market, but the customer base did'nt care, we bitched about it back then as well. This game has always been evolving since day 1 as well as other mmo's during this time period to keep up with todays mmo's. The game is only gonna be good as the developers and the players that are playing it. Will SWG ever DIE? Well I was always told, never to say never, but I dont think its happening anytime soon.

People like to hope for a new Star Wars MMO, like the one Bioware has been cooking up as many claim that they are doing, however, I like to live in the now and I am not going to wait 3 years for another Star Wars MMO to come out while I got this one to play. If you dont like SWG, just leave and let the people that are playing it, enjoy it for what it is. Unless you a disgruntle vet and wont let bygones be bygones, I know I have.

    On another note..

Alot of the other MMO's out there are nothing but RACES to get get to the Level Capp and making sure your are keyed. You can get left behind in those games if you dont run with a guild. SWG (I do miss the skill base leveling), but its a game where you dont get left behind and get to live in a Universe that we all love to be in or part of.

I made a good honest attempt to return.  I just couldn't do it either.  Mainly for the same reasons you posted OP.  I'm just waiting for something new...

Oh please! Don't blame the SOE games for your PC crashing. I bet you've out of date graphic card drivers. 95% of the problems when games crash. And, you probably will have to customise your experience to suit your PC.

At the OP. Erm, the camera was over the shoulder? Did you not pay the Options control a visit to customise your key map and camera? You have total control with the camera now as it has returned to pre-cu days. Like most of the controls have. Also, NPCs do NOT burst run @ 200mPH any more.

Personally, I think you haven't resubbed at all and copied and pasted your frustations from some ones old NGE review back in 2005. I know, as I remember ready all that, word for word.

Not that I feel it's in my place to correct you, but for the sake of your peace of mind, as you clearly seem dumbfounded by trivial events like this, I posted this at the official boards 5min later because I had half thought it would be deleted, but mostly because it didn't matter. You probably read it there then.

Anyway, I had some enjoyable sessions last night on an entertainer. Having caught a few of the things in the game that annoyed me, I could stay away from them completely, and it did make quite a difference. SWG's 'extra something' comes from its particular community and those undefinable non combat elements left over from the old days, which comes together to really help you perceive it as something more than flawed and a perpetual grind.

    But you ARE talking rubbish.

The camera has returned to pre-cu and now users have total control over direction etc as before.

This was a huge bug back in 2005 when NGE first hit. Since then, the dev team have fixed this some 12 months ago, so NPCs no longer run off at warp speed.

*Looting. You killed something, walk over to loot it. "You're in combat!" No I'm not. You try again. "You're in combat!". There isn't a microbe alive in that damned desert and I'm in combat with a corpse for what ironically is a longer period of time than it actually takes to kill the damned guy.

Again. This was an old issue but has been fixed. Sometimes you still get 'stuck in combat' but this is due to another NPC trying to attack you but is stuck.

Essentially, you have posted out of date information then you have copied from your 'sources' and posted it here. Anyone who actually PLAYS Galaxies still knows that all the above info (including stuff I havent posted above) is utter rubbish.

You are so wrong on many things.  I experienced many of the same problems and some others during my time back during the vet trial and that was only a few months ago.  Nice try fanboi.

I can actually vouch for all these because, it has happened to me multiple times since I started playing the game. Some of the bugs are not huge, but, they def. ruin the experience.

nope, new comp, udated drivers and all. full scan, nothing still. sure, is it my computer? yes because others can play it. Regardless or not I cant seem to play sony games. I have nothing against it. I wanted to come back but I cant. I'll just continue playing EVE and CoV where I have no problems at all.

The game bored me.  I played to level 20 doing the so called LEGACY quest and after that had no idea where or what to do.  The crafting...I had no clue, no tutorial, no nothing to figure it out.  Space Combat was soooo repetitive.  I had to uninstall it and cancel the account.  And what is the point being a dancer?  So you basically make a dancer and macro her to dance in cantinas to make money???  ZZzzzzz.  Being a Jedi was cool for the first 2 hours.  This game had so much potential and failed.   I have a Geforce 8800GTX and the games graphics where...meh.  Well if ya like it, good for you.  I think I actually saw the game at walmart in the bargin bin for 5 bucks.  Check it out if ya want, I didn't like it.

It's an excellent review AranStormah. Many of the issues you experienced and feelings you felt were also my initial impressions when I first started playing. Once I got planet side I started to discover the depth and that pretty much kept me in playing and hooked.

I am not sure if you are still playing and if not sorry the game did not work out for you but I do appreciate the time you spent writing about some of the games shortcomings.

Gotta be.. Thats the problem with these new MMORPG's, they are so dumbed down. When I started Everquest back in the ole days, it took me about 1 week to figure out how the damn crafting system worked and what to craft (was a casual player though) and let alone where the hell to go.

Most of the new MMO's today are catered to FPS Newbs anyways. No one wants to take the time to learn, I love the people that play for 1 day and quit. Now thats is just funny as (*&$#..but very true..

Players today love the easy button, I say good ridance and go away to these types of players, there are plenty more mmo's out there for you to try, just  dont play this one and bitch please!

    @ Ave.

I really do wish you had read my reply before posting. So its acceptable for someone to post out of date information as their 'opinion'? Theres a place for that kind of behaviour and its called the Veteran refuge. This is for current game discussion, and since the OPs post contains NOTHING to do with the current game, thats where it belongs.

Players today love the easy button, I say good ridance and go away to these types of players, there are plenty more mmo's out there for you to try, just  dont play this one and bitch please!

Freaking HILARIOUS coming from an NGE-fanboi.  A game doesn't get MORE dumbed-down than SWG: NGE.  It's so dumbed-down that all of the core elements are STOLEN from WoW but delivered horribly.

Saying other MMO's are "dumbed-down" when you play this one is so ridiculous that it's saddening.

    AveBethos

Lets get this straight.. Fanboi such a lame burnout terminology these days. But its all good. And what in the HELL are you doing in SWG forums anyways? You claim you dont like SWG, but still hang around the block. No offense AveBethos, but get a life man and find another type of hobby/mmo instead of posting on a fourm on a game you can't bear to play.

People like you I can't figure out why you post on a forum about a game you can't stand (there is a vet forum for that). Dont you get enough attention? Or are you seriously burnout on your current mmo's? I respect most of my friends that are vets from the Pre Cu days and they still can't play the game, but I don't see them ranting about a game they gave up a couple of years ago. They either moved on or picked up another hobby.

Find a new hobby is my best advice for you. Believe me, its nothing personal agaist you.. And let go of SWG and move on..

I would expect this to be customizeable from somewhere, but that's besides the point because it wasn't blatantly obvious and as such I was stuck with another minor, but annoying issue. It all adds up for the total experience >.<

The camera has returned to pre-cu and now users have total control over direction etc as before.

It's becoming a habit again on these forums with people posting out of date information. Please get your facts right next time.
Your point about the camera thing is correct, however none of your other ones are. I frequently experience these bugs on a Day to Day basis. Sometimes  being stuck in combat can be attributed to being in combat with a creature that is not attacking you but for some reason is still in combat, but that doesn't justify it as a bug, and I've still had it happen without another NPC in sight. NPCs also still warp off, especially when I try kiting.

Perhaps it is you who ought to be in-game playing Galaxies. Its a decent game, but its not for everyone, there is no need to sugar-coat.

I'm not sugar coating anything. I acknowledged about the combat, happens to me, so i can't argue. Nothing else has and i certainly don't get NPCs flying off at warp speed like they used to when NGE first hit.

The game is far from perfect, like all MMOs, but its nothing like the OP has claimed it to be.

I find this kind of statement very insulting. I never had anything considered l337 (I really hate typing this) but I, like many others, never needed stuff like that to have fun.

What I will not get over is being lied to and manipulated by a corproration that never told us (in any meaningful advance) of their plans, and without any kind of reparation.

All of us, even the pro-NGE'ers, deserve accountability from SOE as we are/were the ones paying subscriptions.

Understood, but it is'nt going to happen.

    On another note..

It depends of what type of player you are, some players love it, some players hate it, but this new SWG that we play now has come a long way since the release of NGE.

True, but that is my point. The NGE showed me exactly how little protection we have as consumers in the MMO market.

We all take a risk when playing a MMO of any type. Imagine those folks playing AC2 (That loved it and devoted so much time into that game, only to be dismissed) and likewise for the folks that played Auto Assault. I was a Earth and Beyond player and that game was killed off as well. One good thing that came out of that game was, it made me go to Eve Online.

Enjoy the game for what it is now, if you dont like it, just simply goto your Control Panel, Remove Program from your computer and replace it with something you do like to play. Its as simple as that.

But do you not think it's time that we as consumers need better protection?

Playing an MMO should not be a risk in my opinion. Not when you're paying for a service.

    DMUK,

The OP is posting about the gameplay CURRENTLY, and how he gave it a fair shot and it failed to meet his expectations, then he explains why in some detail.

It is very much on topic with this forum, he isn't talking Pre-CU he is talking about his experience a few weeks ago...

I think that we are often blasted on this forum for having opinions (which everyone is entitled to) about the current game that are different than yours...

Read his post, it talks about the game in its CURRENT state.

No need to flame him as I think we all just want SWG to be the fun game we all love/loved.  He has every right to disagree about the state the game is currently in.
