Now we all know how Vanguard turned out but I can't keep asking myself if the post WOW era MMO is missing what made EQ, AO, and DAOC so much fun. Gone are the days of traversing 30 minutes to an open zone mob camp and the ever dreaded corpse run and they have been replaced with solo oriented quests, no death penalty, and instances. I started wondering if I didn't just miss the older MMOS because they were something fresh and new but because some of the gameplay mechanics were just more enjoyable than the current crop of games. If a game like Vanguard came along and brought back the "old school" mmo would anyone else prefer that to the wow clones?

It's amusing that you include Anarchy Online in your list. The game was the first MMOG to use instances, and use them heavily; it nullified the death penalty with insurance, where the worst you could lose was what you gained since your last insurance booth hit; had no corpse run at all, period; and added many ways to get around the world quickly.
No, I don't miss the days of 30 minute runs, corpse retrievals, massive experience point loss on death, and forced-grouping encounters dominating the game. I've been playing MMOGs since 1998 (not counting MUDs, which I've been playing even longer) and I don't miss that stuff at all...it wasn't what made the games enjoyable to me.
