Turns out Coach in the back of the plane is the safest in a crash

gpettgpett Member Posts: 1,105

Article here.

The airlines official stance is that there is no safest spot on a plane.  Independant research shows otherwise:

Sitting in the back of the bus... er plane used to be shamefull.  I guess it is now the place to be.

This is on average. The article admits that there were some cases (5 of 20) where sitting in the front is better.

5 of 20... 1/4 is less than any of the odds currently listen on the chart.

Wait, people need a chart to guess that the back of a flying missile is relatively safer than sitting in front?

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

My mom used to always tell me sitting over the wings was the safest because it was the strongest part of the plane.

How often does a plane crash tail first?

Sounds reasonable to me that the people at the back of the plane would be safest.  I mean all those people ahead of them would soften the fall.

    Wish Darkfall would release.

What a polite way to put it.

There's a crack in here about the rich finally getting what they deserve.  And yes.. in retrospect, sitting in the front of a virtual missile seems a bit stupid. Of course, in retrospect, everything seems stupid.

Being rich means you deserver to die or get hurt in a plane crash? I don't like you.

Wow... that made me laugh so hard. I didn't need to do any research and I would assume being farthest from the point of death, the front, would be safer.

Hmm.. that didn't come out right. Should have phrased that differently. Yeah.. anyway, I have nothing against the rich.

It is the strongest part of the plane. Just not the safest. Also does this test base this off of nose dive only? Then yes during a crash the rear of the plane is safest. If its based off of a belly landing then the middle of the plane over the wings is safest. I really hate tests that leave out so much info.

HOLD: Going to read article missed linky.

Well after reading the article I just have to say wow. Even in the AirForce they always said the best spot was just aft of the wings. But not all the way back.

TBH though when I get on a plane I really don't expect to survive.

Maybe the reason more people survive coach is because there are more people there. Then when the crash happens you just bounce off of other bodies instead of the inside of the aircraft?

Having the seats face the rear of the plane is safer, too.

But for some reason people don't like to face the rear of the plane, they'd rather face the front of the plane.

This thread reminded me of something by brother told me awhile back. He said that the "emergency position," you know, put your head between your legs and put your tray table up, is the most dangerous position you can be in. Said that being in that position breaks your neck on impact so the plane company gets less law suits from the survivors.

Anyone know if this is true? Sorry for this off-topic question, by the way. But hey, this is a plane safety thread.

There was a mythbusters about that.  Turns out that it isn't made to kill people, it will break your legs, but doesn't kill you.  The shock supposedly goes though your body and into the seats if you do the position.  But than again, you can hardly call mythbusters science.

Why do people even expect to survive a plane crash?

Yeah, I know some crashes are survivable but anyways here is something for you to think about the next time you get on a plane. Sit down in your seat and look as far to the front of the plane as you can. Kind of looks like the inside of a giant coffin doesn't it?
