I am hoping this game will do well for a few simple reasons, why it isn't my exact fantasy in what I hoped for, it will still be pretty good.
I hope his game will do well for a few reasons, one it's a genre that hasn't been mass produced like fantasy MMO's in a magical universe of wizards and warriors, it's about pirates.. Also, the player community (on mmorpg.com and the pirates forum) seem pretty nice, well mannered, and not as 'hardcore" as in other games.
This game is going to do well because of it's release, as long as its fun to pick up and play, it will have a ton of subscribers who are "trying it out while waiting for WAR, or AoC" like me.
Also, a question I don't feel like looking on the FAQ's page, if I am a pirate, can I use a merchants ship? Can i use the same ship as a privateer or whatever they call em'?
And not to keep you guys reading on, but I have an idea to make everyone happy (maybe?) Keeping in mind that I want to role a pirate, im all for "attack anything whenever, im a friggen pirate for gods sake" , but im going to be realistic, because you want people to be merchants and privateers for balancement ... my idea is, if they are within say..three levels of you, you can attack them and sink them, this doesnt have to result in them losing there ship (too hard to get a new ship just because some pirate sinks you) , or you could just make it easy to get a new ship, but I really think any merchant that doesnt have protection deserves to be ransacked by pirates, this would also make it kind of more interesting....
PS Id like to discuss this
Though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays.

I'm pretty sure this game will appeal to everyone since it has no fantasy elements except maybe ghost pirates. Age of Conan and Warhammer are innovative, but they are still fantasy. I am sick and tired of fantasy mmos, although the new mmos that are soon to be released such of AOC are appealing they are still the same genre. MMOs need a new direction to appeal to all gamers, and i think Pirates of the burning sea is creating a new direction for mmos- diffent genres other than fantasy.
I believe you can do anything regardless of class. Class will just make some things more efficient like freetraders will be better at crafting. Other than that everyone can do everything merchants can battle, and pirates can craft etc...
Also to answer your question i believe ships are level based so merchants should be able to use a battleship, and pirates, privateers, and navy captains should be able to use merchant ships.
You can't say that civilization don't advance, however, for in every war they kill you in a new way.

Not really
Some ships will require certain skills to be used.
So a big merchant ship will require some kind of high mercantile skill. And i dont think everyone will gain them as easy as merchants (if at all)
As for PVP
There is no level limit. LvL 40 will be able to fight lvl 1 and vice versa
And you dont lose the ship when sinked - but you loose durability points. When they are reduced to zero you lose ship.
Pirates will be only class capable of comandeering other player ship, but this ship will have only 1 durability point
The top tier ships are restricted to their classes for nationals. As say a Spanish merchant, you won't be sailing the top tier war ships. Or as a Spanish naval officer you won't be sailing the top tier merchant ships.
As a pirate if you can capture it, you can sail it. Though sailing the restricted ships will enable people to freely attack you.
As to your other point PvP will always be consensual.
edit: too slow...shouldn't wander off mid post
lobotomist i said that each class is more efficient than another in certain areas, but you should still be able to do everything. So i meant that merchants are experts at crafting and economics so it is easier and faster for them to do it, but other classes should be able to get into crafting and economics except it won't be as efficient for them. So if you want to change your unofficial proffesion you don't have to create a new character.
You can't say that civilization don't advance, however, for in every war they kill you in a new way.

If you're a pirate, you can take any ship.
Most ships have a level restriction.
If a pirate commands a merchant ship, or a navy ship, they're constantly flagged for pvp.
Oh i never knew that. That sounds pretty tight, and it will keep people playing other nations other than pirate. Just another great reason to eagerly await pirates of the burning sea.

I'm kind of wondering if this will be a good second MMO..
Currently I'm playing LotRO and love it! unlike most I'm not all that hyped about AoC or WAR.. but I would like to find an alternative MMO for those times I just want something different..
This could be it, so long as I don't have to devote my life playing to have fun..
One issue I have with the game is the community on the official forums is approaching Vanguard religious status as far as the fanboism goes -
There are multiple posts about how the game is "perfect" from people who haven't played one second of it and anyone suggesting anything negative is swarmed upon -
Anytime you the extreme fanbois make up a majority of the community it usually ends badly -
Being a fan of the game is great - saying the game is "perfect" before it's even launched is pathetic -
SOE owns this game, same situation vanguard was in, not worth playing for 5 minutes. stay away from this game

Not exactly Vanguard borrowed money from SOE, so SOE pushed them to release early. On the other hand the developers of pirates of the burning sea have no financial problems, SOE will just take care of marketting.

complete, 100% wrong. SOE owns nothing. they have the rights to advertise, market, and distribute it. that's it. FLS is self-financed, whereas Sigil was deeply in debt and had to sell into SOE. This has been covered many times if you'd thought to do some preemptive research. SOE has ZERO control over the production of this game.
