Thank a lot for this DNL review, I was too lazy to gather the information myself

Cool, someone finally organized all this. Thanks - I wanted to see somethin like this post.

(I keep seeing random posts about DnL once in a while discussing a single feature at a time. I have a small suspicion that the future DnL GMs or some other organized group has a hand in all this, but if it is true I applaud them for it. Way to go with free advertisement and saving money for more important things. Plus these sorts of informative posts are way better then the usual "InsertAGame rocks!! InstertRandomSimilarStatements. DontForgetToInsertThatXCompetitorGame sucks here!!!")

Oh and by the way, I think you miscalculated castles. A Barony should have 14 castles total and not 13 - 13 fortresses and 1 Baron's castle itself. Maybe I am wrong but thats what would make sense. And so on. So, you should not just multiply all the numbers together but do a polynomial type calculation. I am too lazy and don't care enough to actually do it, but if this is true you are missing a bunch.

Nah I say let people advertise the features of the games they like. Makes more people check out the game and thus makes it better for those who will play it. I mean this is essentially the same as someone saying "WoW will own so much!" or "EQII kicks ass!!" but in a much more intellectual manner.

(I used WoW and EQII as examples solely because they seem to be mentioned most often. I like WoW myself and I don't think EQII will be a bad game either.)

Hey thanks for posting this list because it shows to people that think they are not interested what this game will be like. That list just shows again why i wanna be in beta and why i think this game will be very good to play (even if they only get in 2/3 of what they say). Dark and Light has a great amount of gameplay possibilities in my eyes and there will happen a lot of fun stuff.

I am looking forward to this game and will buy it when it goes gold. Just hope everything will go smoothly.

40950 fortresses! Let´s say the game will get  10 000 players online at peek hours (wich is very optimistic considdering the competition from WoW, DE, EQ2, WO, MEO, GW, etc, etc. this fall). This means there are about four fortresses per player, a fact that eliminates PvP. Why fight over a fortress when you can get one for free? This will be a lonely and void world, with ghost cities and empty fortresses. The hugeness of DnL will brake the game.

lol 10,000 players peek hours thats way to low probly 100,000 or so on peak hours for a bit untill the game gets more players allready about 100,000 signed up for beta.

Ok, there are some wrong things in this post.
First of all, there will not be under sea management and underground management will be not implemented in the initial release.
2º- The number of strongholds wull be proportional to the number of players.

There is some more things to say about DnL, like there will be 42 tradeskills, and a lot of things that have not been confirmed like siege weapons and thinks like that.
If you want, I can make a post with all those info updated.

Get real. I´m currently signed up for six or seven MMORPGs at the moment (DnL for instance), but will only buy one of the games. And remember it´s one thing to have the game and another to be online. EVE Online recently had arecord of 10 000 players online, and thats a pretty high ranked game with no competition in it´s spacefaring sci-fi genre. Even if DnL gets four times as many players online, it´ll still be void and lack PvP incentives. As I said, the competition from this fall and onwards will be lethal. The market is not nearly growing as much as the amount of new games coming out. Many of these will not survive, and I´m affraid DnL will not, due to the lack of social interaction.

  • blacksacblacksac Member Posts: 1,045

    Thanks Keldar,

Yes the number of strongholds available will be controlled to reflect the current population at any one time. Full time Game Masters (GM's) will play an important role in this.

And yes, there will be siege machines available. Also people can be turned into vampires, and necros will be able to transform into bats! These are only a few examples of whats planned :)

The most strategic structure to control will be the Mana fountains.

They have strategic locations in the game which are necessary to feed Dark or Light magic. This magic will radiate around the fountains and under this influence players are more likely to recover their own Mana level as long as it is aligned to the players own faction.

Why is it necessary to protect the Mana fountains? Well it will be important to control as many as you can near any territory you wish to conquer, actually it will be a priority before going in to conquer a territory... this adds a very strong strategic element to the game.

Players that log out for the day, can assign their character to their pledged Lord (who will have many options for kingdom control) as an NPC soldier. As an NPC soldier your character will protect your stronghold and follow orders from your Lord. Any experience gained in this state will be kept, any death will still have its penalty. The hiring of NPC mercenaries will also be available. Armies can be massed, with siege and aerial mounts.

If this is too much, head for the wilderness and explore, be it in small groups or alone, the world is big enough to avoid any war.

Big in France maybe, but not in Sweden (where I´m from). Over here, it´s all WoW.

its not 40905, its 4095 forts. Im sure they wont have more than 1 or 2 servers because of the size of the world, and it is going to be popular due to its PvP, and overall uniqueness. Like has been said 100,000 signed of just for beta.

  • StereoviewerStereoviewer Member Posts: 238
It´s 40 950 fortresses. Do your maths. The fact that GMs can cut down the number of fortresses available based on players online sounds good though. Remember however that 100 000 people signed up for beta does not equal the number of players online. If 2-5 registred for beta actually buy the game, and 2-5 of those guys actually play the game at the same time, that gives 25 000 to 4 000 people online.

  • HypeHype Member CommonPosts: 270

is this the same game that uses your char as an NPC to defend your fortress when you're offline?  Are NPCs inhabiting these castles for color? Perhaps they could defend their homes... I mean, somebody has to be in those fortresses when you first log on, right?

That said, I'm starting to see why people are so geeked about DnL, I may just try it... after all, you can parachute...

Yes. And you can recruit new guards for your fortress, and thinks like that.
And, there will be one only server, with new tecnology and all those things to make a real big server with no zones.

  • blacksacblacksac Member Posts: 1,045

One server to rule them all, one server to find them, one server to bring them all and in Dark and Light bind them...

Sorry :) Cheesy I know... Just couldnt help myself  image

First, there are always people who play the game but not beta - in fact, they usually constitute a majority of the players. That means, that even if by your rather pessimistic math you get 25000 people from beta, thats just a sign that there will be many more others.

Second, DnL is rather distinct from most other games and thus it will have easier time competing then many. Basically, it is the "not-like-rest" alternative - it might be hard to choose between WoW and EQII and all the rest, but all those people who do not like those games or just feel like something different will go for DnL.

Finally, it is a simple and clear fact by now that many people do want to play it merely due to all the innovations it is planning to introduce. The list is pretty overwhelming, and even those who don't like the game would be hard-pressed to argue against that.

So, I do not think that population will be a problem at all.

  • ElernetElernet Member Posts: 68

    And I count 10*5*7*9*13 + 10*5*7*9 + 10*5*7 + 10*5 + 10 =

    40950 + 3150 + 350 + 50 + 10 = 44510 total castles.

Is this wrong? What I am asking is are tehre such things as Baron's or Duke's castle on top of little fortresses?

  • blacksacblacksac Member Posts: 1,045

    Hi Elernet,

I think 40950 still stands. All strongholds can be upgraded to included extra buildings, larger walls and better defenses. So Barons and Dukes depending on their income will have the opportunity to develope a fine stronghold in time.

The income is recieved partly through a tax system. The local Baron recieves a portion of any loot taken from mobs killed on his lands. The Baron sets how much of a portion to take. Some Barons will be greedy and powerful, others fair and noble :)

  • RegusRegus Member Posts: 489

I really think that i will buy Dark and Light now if beta goes well and not with to much problems, WoW and EQ2 also sounds nice (franchise) but this is a game where there are a lot of players that are more hardcore players then in WoW and EQ2 i think, everybody knows how good EQ was and how great the games of blizzard are, so the newbies, i think, will play WoW and maybe EQ2.

The ranking will be nice too, i really wanna become a duke or baron or other kind nobility because that sounds great in a game.

So, if you´re in a high social position, you´ll be able to make war with other prices or thinks like that, managing an army of players.
No one knows how will this run, but Devs have said it a lot of times. So, everyone can try to make a really big army and start conquering all the kingdoms.

Just though I'd add my two pence worth.  Firstly DnL is the game I'm following with the most passion.  I'm hoping it will breath some much needed fresh air in the now stagnant MMORPG market.

As for subscriber numbers NPCube are aiming at 10,000 subscribers.  I guess this figure was chosen as an indicator of what it needs to be profitable.  If the game is a good as it indicates it will be I suspect that figure will end up being much higher.

    The exact quote:

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Even within the MMORPG genre, 'Dark And Light' happens to be fairly hardcore," Aihoshi explained. "Your grandmother won't want to play it, nor will your younger brother who buys two games a year. It appeals to the serious gamer who has broadband (and) who will have no problem accepting NP Cube's distribution strategy."

But, he added, the real question is how big of an audience the game needs to capture to make it commercially profitable. NP Cube didn't comment on that, but it is anticipating 10,000 subscribers.

"If they think they're going to get 10,000, I think they are probably over-estimating how much interest there is in the game," says Aihoshi.

What is up with this stupid 2 Degrees download client BS???

I thought these idiots hosting their files on FilePlanet was bad, but this 2 Degrees thing is even dumber.

As far as I can tell, it does not work with Mozilla, as I can't get any of the files to download. Just takes me to the 2 Degrees web site.

What is wrong with a good old Http or FTP link?
