Its the 'Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers', which is the dodgy one....I would love to see the numbers if they removed that part of the definition.
I do not even like the game. EQ 2 is such a better game. It is a bit shocking if not disturbing, but when so many gold sellers and bots play, it increases the subscriptions.
Lol I love posts like these. 'Wow announces 9 million subs!' 'We'll I don't like it...'
Thank you so much for your contribution to this community none191. What ever would we do without you?
I think it took longer for WoW to go from 8.5million to 9 million than it did from the last announcement to 8.5.
I guess it doesn't matter, I've reactivated my account as well as a few of my friends that left to go play another MMO.
I think for WoW to continue to attract people, that they need to move away from the insance key sequence to instances.
I would rather an instance be hard and require skill and gear to accomplish instead of having a huge string of instances to clear to be allowed in the instance. After TBC it is harder for newer people to catch up.
I do not even like the game. EQ 2 is such a better game. It is a bit shocking if not disturbing, but when so many gold sellers and bots play, it increases the subscriptions.
See the Asian gold farming video? Factories of WoW gold sellers, bots: One of China's newest factories operates here in the basement of an old warehouse. Posters of World of Warcraft and Magic Land hang above a corps of young people glued to their computer screens, pounding away at their keyboards in the latest hustle for money.
The point here is that even if you (or anyone else on these forums) don't like the game it is still successful enough to have 9 million subscribers in the world. Even if some of those accounts are bot accounts (I wonder how many are in EQ2?) that number still makes "better" games like EQ2 look very poor in comparison. It seems that many more people think WoW is a better game than anything else available on the market.
The fact is that WoW is here to stay whether you like it or not and all the reports of WoW losing subscribers appears to be a lot of rubbish.
Bigger isnt always better, just ask fat people. Its not a numbers game when it comes to quality, WoW has mass appeal with its cartoon style graphics, low system specs and its dumbed down battles and crafting. Its a great entrance into the world of MMO's but it lacks depth.

I agree with what you said but you can do a lot worse than a game that lacks depth. All games grow more boring, WoW's success (and hopefully it's greatest contribution to the genre) is that it didn't start painful.

I agree 100%. MMOs need to start making the games interesting from the start. Most of them are too worried about taking away the 'OMG THATS AWESOME' factor of the high level content. But that content is just being wasted if you bored all your potential customers away with 'kill x amounts of rats' quests for the first 10 levels. WoW was fun from the onset and only got tedious after you reached max level. I never really got the urge to make more than 2 alts though, once I had seen the dungeons it was enough since there was very little story or narrative behind it and even less in the way of hidden or hard to reach content.
I liked WOW for about 6 months then I got bored. Started up again and played BC then I got bored after 2 months. I definitely had some fun times with the game, but it all just seemed the same after awhile. Plus the raids take up waay too much time especially when you have a family and other things going on in your life. I would say that the first 40 levels are the most fun, but then it gets fairly grindy after that. Blizzard did a great job with this overall compared to most every other MMO out there, say what you want about the game but it is the biggest seller. That can't be just because of peer pressure and the social aspect, the game itself has a lot to offer for many different play styles. I personally just need more new stuff to play. See you all in Age of Conan!
one way or another.... wow has brought many people into the mmorpg world which was increasing slowly before WoW, now with all those more customers the other mmorpg makers will see more customers on thier servers aswell, since even though some jumps from wow to another game, many newcomers go for wow...
With that cycle around, the mmorpg world will increase alot quicker than before WoW came, it's a good thing for the companies, they will be able to financial more into new projects and hopefully create new worlds of the next generation to us all.
I know for sure that certain other mmorpgs have grown after wow was launched, which would be kinda weird when you think at the sheer number of subs WoW has, goldfarmers or not.
Just look at EvE, it has had increased numbers lately, might very well be it's the ones who started wow as thier first mmorpg and are now exploring for new mmorpgs, where as before wow, they most likely would have sought a completely different game platform.
WoW wasn't my first mmorpg, but it set a high standard, sometimes i do fancy other mmorpgs over wow, because thier combat system is a little more advanced or if you look at EvE, what a huge piece of universe that has so many real life war over it... EvE is just too huge for new players to understand at start, it's insane and that's where WoW come in, it's quite light, even though it's easy to play, there's still alot to master and it progress very nicely, while EvE gives you a huge chunk to chew from beginning that it might scare some people away but perhaps the people whose scared wouldn't fit into it anyway, since EvE is that a complex game when it comes to reputation and all, you can't just raid some instance and spit on people in EvE, they will just declare war on you and smack you on the killboards for the pirates or bountyhunters to prey on...
Mmorpg platform will soon consume everything, if it hasn't already.
This game is still growing. Incredible! That's gotta burn all the people who swore WoW was a short-term fad, that it would fade within a year, or two at the most.
All those people who pinned their MMORPG hopes on games like EQ2, SWG or MEO/LOTRO or Vanguard... L O L!
Even if you don't play it (and no, I haven't played WoW since the first year of release), you have to admit Blizzard got it right. They tapped into the Eastern MMO market like no other Western-based company has ever done before. And they kept new subs coming in to replace the turnover on the home front.
Makes you wonder what Bill Roper is thinking, eh? The project he helped get off the ground, then left because they didn't feel they had enough creative control, or enough communication with upper management. Bet Roper is thinking "Dmmit!"
So games like AoC or Warhammer are supposed to blow WoW away? Even if they do, and that's a stretch, Blizzard will still have reaped profits from three solid years of growth, and they'll milk another three easy, even when it begins to decline.
Blizzard raised the bar. It's up to other MMORPG companies to reach it. And so far, no one has come close.
The point here is that even if you (or anyone else on these forums) don't like the game it is still successful enough to have 9 million subscribers in the world. You come to far to many incorrect conclusions. Just because many people play it doesn't make it a great game or the bet on the market. If enough people say the earth is flat, does that make it flat? Peer pressure is a major factor in WoW's popularity. People join because friends do and keep accounts paid just to keep in contact. In respect to the numbers the game is sucessful but being the best game currently out? Sorry it isn't. Check polls and ratings on various gaming sites, heck I don't think it even made top 20 here.
As for numbers they can skew things easily. I would love to see the Asian market numbers and how much of the new 9 mill they make up. Also these numbers are taken over the quarter so do they coun't accounts that expired in the Q? What about banned accounts? Are those removed from the numbers or not since they might be paid for a month or 2. It is all in how you can read into how they carefully describe a subscriber.
My conclusion is screw the quarterly reports. Give me a weekly accounts that logged on in the U.S. and Europe. Then we would see some real data. Not the vague Asia included $0.50 a month gaming parlor crap.
It is the best MMO on the market right now. Not because of its content but because its the only MMO that is properly polished. Polishing up your game is key. There are very few bugs in the game and everything is so smooth and well done. I mean look at their website. It shows that they dont half ass anything.
Blizzard is known for their stability and polished games. Battle.net is still filled with players. The two games ive played for the longest are Starcraft and Warcraft 3. They have so much replayability on B.net its rediculous.
Your therapist called asking why you've been missing sensitivity training class. I told her you were here making these kind of statements. By the way, there are a lot of thin people who have miserable lives...some of them feel better about their lives by insulting others. Conversely I know those who feel life is too short and fun to waste on diet & exercise, enjoying comfort over speed. I feel better eating healthy and exercising, but that's what works for me. I'm not about to go and make blanket statements for humanity. At the end of the game, all the chess pieces go into the same box.
Moving on, EQ2 is indeed eye-candy and has more of a customized user-interface, making it a gamer's game. Perhaps even a powergamer's game...and one thing I've learned in my years of MMO playing is to not listen to a powergamer unless you have the money to spend on the latest-greatest computer that can handle the latest-greatest memory/video/processor just to hop to the next game that hits the market. If you're average Joe/Jane, WoW is a mainstay because it is so user-friendly, has depth of quality, very low error rate and Customer Service that treats you like a human being.
I do not even like the game. EQ 2 is such a better game. It is a bit shocking if not disturbing, but when so many gold sellers and bots play, it increases the subscriptions.

Very good point. I concede many aspects to WoW are good. But it is not a MMO for a more intelligent or mature person. The community is mostly children and bots.
The fact WoW has 9 million teens and bots and gold farmers playing does NOT mean it is HIGH QUALITY . I have a more discerning taste when it comes to MMO. I expect more.

Good for Blizzard. There a good company and deserve to make money. But I am still waiting for Gods and Heros to come out. Only thing that would interest me from Blizzard right now is a New Wow. Not an expansion but a new Wow all together. If Blizzard made a new Wow I would probably buy it.

I'm sure all the ppl that play the game or have within the past couple months know how hard blizzard came down on the farmers and power levelers.
no wow player is stupid enough to buy from them anymore
It's true they're out there and you get random tells every couple days from some farmer saying he has this gold and come to this website.. but theres always someone loggin into vent like.. "umm guys i got banned permanently" like wtf how? "i was drunk and i didn't want to farm...so i bought gold" oh ok have fun with the new account retard

That's one of the reasons I love WoW (especially after playing Maple Story...oh how torturous it was). I actually know a few WoW players, in real life, that are over the age of 30.
Currently Playing: 3ds Max 2009 Played and Loved: World of Warcraft, EVE Online, Warhammer Online Best F2P MMO: Requiem Bloodymare Want to Play: Aion (See Teaser), DCuniverseOnline (awesome gameplay videos)

Yea thats one fo the better things about wow.. a lot of mature gamers
and not your steryotypical basement dwellers, i'm in the army and i'll meet new ppl on a daily basis and you wouldn't believe how many of them play wow... people i would never ever expect to play

World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition
World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees’ territories are defined along the same rules.
Does that mean that they count all cards they have on the market that not are sold as subscribers?
It's time for other game companies to stop bashing this game and start taking notes. There are 4 things that make WoW a hit, and there is no reason whatsoever other companies can't make a different game with different features and still use this formula: 1. It works. The old "it's a mmorpg, it's supposed to be a buggy piece of crap" are over. Are you listening SOE? Sigil? 2. Casual players and hardcore players both like it. 3. Every player, from Northshire Abby at level 1 to the Black Temple at level 70, feels like a hero. The days of "just wait until you get to level __; then the game starts to be fun" are over. 4. PvP is optional, but meaningfully rewarded. It amazes me that so many game companies can't figure this out. But until they do, enjoy your meager subscriptions and keep making excuses.
WTF LoL meaningfull PvP you have to b kidding me
WoW has some of th eworst meaningless PvP around today. Most games are better than WoW at PvP even Everquest 2 is better.
PvP servers
Multiple Arenas
Multiple battlegrounds
Outdoor PvP with objectives
PvP Quests
Tournaments
Rankings
Titles
Participating in the World Series of Video Gaming with a $90,000 prize
Gear equal to or better than what can be achieved through raiding that can only be gotten through PvP
If you say WoW has no meaningful PvP, you clearly aren't a pvper.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Its not a numbers game when it comes to quality, WoW has mass appeal with its cartoon style graphics, low system specs and its dumbed down battles and crafting. Its a great entrance into the world of MMO's but it lacks depth.
The fact WoW has 9 million teens and bots and gold farmers playing does NOT mean it is HIGH QUALITY . I have a more discerning taste when it comes to MMO. I expect more.
Once again, google it. The average WOW player is in the mi 20's.

Average means nothing. What is the median?
Good for Blizzard. There a good company and deserve to make money. But I am still waiting for Gods and Heros to come out. Only thing that would interest me from Blizzard right now is a New Wow. Not an expansion but a new Wow all together. If Blizzard made a new Wow I would probably buy it.
no wow player is stupid enough to buy from them anymore
It's true they're out there and you get random tells every couple days from some farmer saying he has this gold and come to this website.. but theres always someone loggin into vent like.. "umm guys i got banned permanently" like wtf how? "i was drunk and i didn't want to farm...so i bought gold" oh ok have fun with the new account retard
I don't believe it is 9 millions PAYING subscribers.
No matter what they say, the stockmarket is something I believe more then these devs.

That's one of the reasons I love WoW (especially after playing Maple Story...oh how torturous it was). I actually know a few WoW players, in real life, that are over the age of 30.
Currently Playing: 3ds Max 2009
Played and Loved: World of Warcraft, EVE Online, Warhammer Online
Best F2P MMO: Requiem Bloodymare
Want to Play: Aion (See Teaser), DCuniverseOnline (awesome gameplay videos)

Meaning, lets print 1Million cards = 1Million subscribers?
And do they count the card again when they are getting used?
WoW has some of th eworst meaningless PvP around today. Most games are better than WoW at PvP even Everquest 2 is better.
PvP servers
Multiple Arenas
Multiple battlegrounds
Outdoor PvP with objectives
PvP Quests
Tournaments
Rankings
Titles
Participating in the World Series of Video Gaming with a $90,000 prize
Gear equal to or better than what can be achieved through raiding that can only be gotten through PvP
If you say WoW has no meaningful PvP, you clearly aren't a pvper.
