For SOE games there is only a single phase. Closed Public Beta (Anyone can apply but only selected people can play). They probably will initially start with a select few (Probably Legends players) and then start filtering in more people as testing goes on. There wont be an Open Beta. So im guessing Beta will last probably 2 months or so... probably will begin June 1st but only a very few will get in.
PS: The game is claimed to be almost complete. They are mainly testing to get feedback and tweak some of the gameplay mechanics.

Now it's said to be that the game will release august-september ish.
Magus is right. Most of the game is done. Once they fix a few bugs and polish it out, give it a stress test then it's onto launch time.
The beta testers will be playing sometime around summer. This means they probably will not eat nor sleep. The game should be thoroughly tested within a few months is my guess.

I'm also pretty sure that they will not have an open beta. I also was in Planetside and SWG beta and there was no open beta. However, most of the people who applied will get in towards the end of the beta for server stress testing. They want loads of people to see what it takes to bring down the server.
Usually there are 3 or 4 phases to a beta. the first phase is usually the alpha where it is internal testing only. In SWG there were 3 phases to their beta, the 3rd mainly being stress testing. PCGamer has like 10,000 spots for beta testers and they have said that is a drop in the hat for the available beta spots. mmorpg.com has some as well as other sites will be getting some type of beta contests as well. I think we have a better chance of getting into beta than some might think.
I won't be accepted in the Beta... so all i wish is that they will release the game soon. !!
AHHHHHH!

With the way they're treating the EQ2 beta, I can somewhat believe that their product is almost complete. It seems like they're making beta into a marketting ploy more than development. I mean christ, Legends gets in, anyone who purchaces Lords of EverQuest before a certain date are in, 10,000 accounts from PC Gamer are in, MMORPG.com's 15 slots, there might be some more contests out there-- and then all the people who signed up for the beta on the official site. It just seems like they want lots of random people in the beta to see what they can handle, and fine tune minor details.
I have to say that I don't entirely agree with your assessment that the beta is a marketing ploy. If you consider the sheer magnitude of the game and its release, 10,000 plus however many more account probably wont even amount to 5% of the subscribers base on release. I bet September is still probably the target date for release.
But of course, I could be wrong and place too much confidence in SOE.
Also I think if it was truly a marketing ploy there would be no use for a NDA. (the more hype about it the better)

It's hard not to think of it as marketing.
The beta application asked nothing about previous experience, just general "what type of gamer are you" fields. They're giving away thousands of slots to people who play on the Legends server, they're giving away thousands of accounts to anyone who bought Lords of EverQuest. They're giving out 10,000 accounts to any lucky person with access to a PC Gamer. There are a number of contests to get into beta.
And NDA makes for better hype, anyway. You're going to have all the people who get into beta and love the game saying "Oh god this is so sweet, I wish I could tell you just how sweet it is, but you'll just have to wait and find out!"
Darkness creates more hype than spilling everything. Once you spill everything then people know what to start eternal debates about before the game is even released. Just look at official forums, it's like TELEPORTING RUINS MY IMMERSION. BEING ABLE TO LEAVE MY FRIEND A MESSAGE RUINS MY IMMERSION. etc etc.
Kanzen you are starting to convince me on this. Without annoying you and allowing me to play the devils advocate here, how do you think SOE could have approached this beta without leaving marketing as their primary objective? I mean I guess my only point is that every single facet of game development must include some form of marketing. We can't forget SOE's main objective here...to sell copies and create "hooked" consumers.
Please tell me if you feel that if marketing does play a role in this beta that the overall product will somehow suffer or not be as thoroughly tested. I mean from SOE's perspective wouldnt you WANT feedback from your most loyal consumers? (the legends subscribers)

Unfortunately I bet this is accurate. If you consider all the contests and giveaways will end in the end of June that puts us for beta in July not June.
Ugg.

what is up with people saying planetside didn't have open beta? everyone who signed up for it was accepted. That is open beta.
This is the beginning of my past. This is the end of my journey.
I don't think it going to be the legends people only when the beta starts but I could be wrong about that.
