Sword of the New World (Review)

Music 10/10

- The music is incredible. Its classical & operatic.

Graphics 10/10

- Visually stunning.

Combat Gameplay 2/10

- What gameplay? You have a party of 3 characters that just do all the work for you.  You just move them around.  I almost fell asleep. Its a shame too, I wish I could be more involved in combat but you can't.  I actually enjoy playing games, not just watching them like a movie. lol.

Summary

- If you have an IQ of like 80 and HATE actually fighting in mmorpgs.  Then this game is for you. It does all the work for you so you don't even have to think. You can just sit there and the game will just play itself for you.  Since its a korean mmorpg, they assumed everyone would bot the game, so they just made the gameplay a BOT that does everything for you. ROFL

The gameplay is a joke, too bad because I really enjoyed the graphics & music.

This review is dead on. I just finished the "trial" and I found it to be about the most boring game I've ever played. Basically you just sit there and watch your toons fight. The only thing that is required for you to do is to pick up drops now and then and to move your characters from point A to Point B. This game looks and sounds wonderful but the gameplay is a total snooze-fest. Avoid this game if you actually like to PLAY a game as this game is totally on Auto-Play.

Well, only some of the music is "classical & operatic". The majority of the rest is some really bad-taste disney club techno.

But regarding the gameplay... yea, that exactly describes SotNW/GE.

    Agreed.

Not trying to bash on a game thats new, or jumping on the bandwagon. I tried this game with an open mind.

That open mind quickly fell asleep.

In fact, this game is so boring... that I told my toons to "assault" to an area (click on a space on the map, and they kill everything on there way to it) and went AFK for a smoke, sandwich, and a poop (not in that order).

Came back from all that and my toons were still alive and well, and still fighting.

    /snooze.

It's a game? I thought it was more like a movie

    Agree with all the above.

But I was also dissapointed with how linear and small most of the maps & dungeons appeared to be. I thought the developers would have at least given Lineage II a run for its money in this department. Shame - they did such a fantastic job on the visuals,  too.

    Music is great.

    Graphics are great.

But hey what's with my charcters killing by themselves?Oh yeah that's right you're not supposed to PLAY this game you're supposed to WATCH it!That's right I fell so stupid for not noticing that..

    Music-10/10

    graphics-10/10

    gampeplay-1/10

It would also be nice if you could play with other players instead of just your three characters because after all it's supposed to be an MMO right??Well it's a rather sad attempt in the gameplay department.

I tried that game a few weeks ago and i pretty much agree with what being said.  After trying to figure out how this game work, choosing 3 characters to play with you all the time is weird.   Anyway after only a few days i was already bored, it feels like i was playing Diablo, was getting no sense of accomplishement from that game at all.

Watching this thread is interesting, because you can really point out the people that played the game for a fair amount of time and those that didn't. The Op for example, only played for a little while. If he played a bit longer, he would have known that if you're just moving your characters around while auto attacking, you'll get your ass handed to you. Around mid levels, just auto - attacking is nog going to cut it. for one, you will kill really slowly, really, really slowly. you will only kill one mob at a time (No, monsters won't stay one-hit kills through out the entire game), while the game is more build on Area of Effects.

So what your saying is I have to get to mid levels before the game will let me actually do something? Ummmm......No thanks as there are plenty of games that let me actually participate from level 1.....IMAGINE THAT!!! A game that is basically a movie with very little interaction from the player till mid levels is not a game.....it's a joke and a bad one at that. You knock yourself out playing though if you like it GL.....I'll go find some games that actually let me do things like.....let me interact with them instead of just be a spectator. Heres an Idea for their next game....Just populate the beautifully rendered world with drops and give us EXP for just running around and picking them up! It would save us the gruelingly boring grind of just watching toons kill everything on their own for hours on end.

Mid - levels sound like it takes forever to reach, but in reality, you will hit the mid levels after only 2 ~ 3 days of playing or so (Thats actually playing, not doing auto - attacking since that slows down your XP gain significantly). Its one of those games where you level very quickly at first, then it slows down. the first few levels are more of a learning curve.

      Correct on all counts.

With some effort you can reach level 40 in 3 days , compared to other games the leveling is easy even after level 70 you can get 2 levels a day done if you have the time. In other games the same level would give around 3 to 5 % exp per hour as opposed to around 20 to 30% per hour in this game, it`s very easy to level up . If you go solo or in two`s you level even faster. Several of the RNPC`s that you can add to your family begin at mid or above mid levels anywhere from 52 to 60  and if your successful at low levels economicaly , you can purchase higher level RNPC cards from other players which would save you the trouble of having to wait and do the quests to obtain them later . The next patch will allow for any RNPC  over lvl 50 to be transformed into a card for sale or trade thus giving anyone the opportunity to have an almost maxed ( up to around lvl 95 ) level RNPC  even from early on in the game as long as they can afford it or have something to trade for it.

I have been playing the GE version for a few months and the majority of the comments here are not  giving a clear interpretation of the game mechanics.

The Auto attack function " patrol mode" has it`s limitations which become more evident as you reach higher levels , it wasn`t designed as a cure all to leveling but rather to be used for coordination purposes in applicable situations.

Certain actions and circumstances will cancel the auto attack , including looting , knock back from mobs , single target selection etc. none of the myriad of stances can be utilized without manual input , none of them period. Sure you can run around and beat on things with a sword or whatever while your healer heals you on patrol mode but that only lasts so long , eventualy you will get mobbed , eventualy you will have to buff , eventualy you will wan`t to use your skills etc. I have rarely seen anyone succeed for any length of time at afk leveling either , most mobs have a knockdown attack that cancels the auto attack , as soon as that happens your characters will cease from attacking , the healer will stop healing and the bodies will be on the ground. I see all of the attempts at afk leveling every day , dead players who have either been killed by mobs or other players who thought that they could gain exp in their sleep.

Try soloing a levitating high level wizard without any direct control  for example , it`s impossible because of the constant mana drain which requires constant manual sp potting . Even on auto attack a healer can`t replenish sp "mana" it has to be done manualy. You have the option of playing any of your characters solo which also requires more manual control but offers higher exp . As the game progresses and you reach a family level of 6 or higher if you happen to be playing on one of the pk servers you can be attacked anywhere outside of towns by anyone at any time. I have never played a mmorpg that didn`t induce sleep from the logic of having to kill x amount of monsters to gain exp but I can assure you that once someone in this game attacks you without warning you will be wide awake. The pvp in this game is fast paced and intense , not only do you have up to 3 chars fighting as a team but you also must make sure that they all choose the proper targets , and use the right skills at the right moment , unless you wan`t to be on auto attack and have 2 of your team killing mobs while the other one is trying to fend off 3 attackers using regular attacks and no healer lol

Auto attack doesen`t cut it in pvp situations which is really the primary core of this game , it`s a pvp oriented game and you cannot I repeat cannot sit back and eat cheetos while your family defends itself on auto attack mode , you will be dead in 1 minute or less. This also applies to massive pvp faction battles and colony war events . Do you honestly think that you can sit back and " watch your team like a movie " ? Trust me there`s nothing simple or "boring " about having to hit skills and pinpoint other players who are attacking you , not for 1 but for 3 characters at the  same time . It requires coordination , concentration and alot of skill to manualy control 3 chars in a battle.

The impression I`m seeing here is of some players in a semi newb area standing around plinking jumping aligators with a musket  while their healer heals them every few minutes. I`ll  agree that the PVE play is not anything to write home about , the mobs don`t use to many skills and for the most part you might as well be killing sheep but I have never found a perfect mmorpg either , if anyone does let me know.

How it really plays out in GE/ SOTNW :

Your in a high level area grinding mobs where item drops can go for as much as 8 million vis each. Some moron comes along and decides he want`s all of the spawns for himself , he initates pk and starts riding down on your team in the middle of hundreds of aggressive monsters who are attacking you at the same time. He kills 2 of your family but your healer survives and is being chased by his 3 characters and a bunch of angry mobs , she manages to get to the first and then the second members of your team and res them. The 3 of you continue to run from the attacker and the monsters , you escape turn around and go back in for revenge. You initiate pk mode and try and attack the moron , soon other players start attacking you also hoping to kill you and pick up the items you might drop ( when you initiate pk and die you lose items and 1% exp). You now have the first moron and his 3 characters fighting with you , 2 or 3 other families of 3 each chasing you along with 100`s of monsters. You manage to bring down his flying wizard but his shooter takes out your elementalist , his wiz is attacking from the ground , you kill his shooter and manage to knock his wiz down , his healer arms himself with 2 daggers ( healers can fight also )  you arm your healer with daggers at the same time , they go head to head and his healer kills your healer and you drop a few items which he picks up . The other 2 players are killed by the mobs in the meantime ,since they  have been under constant attack from mobs while trying to kill each other  during the time that  the healers were fighting , thus ends the skirmish over turf .

If you can breeze through that on "Auto attack " then perhaps you should become a brain surgeon instead of spending your time playing mmorpg`s.

Some of you should try playing the game a while before making baseless claims about how it plays itself.

Yes, i am lvl 66/67/66 and there is no way that u can use stuff like auto attack, u usually mob them, and use AOE to bomb them away :p

But i also hate reviews where the tester only played until lvl 20 and then thinks, that he can give a rating.

Initially unimpressed, I decided to upgrade my account ($8.95) and subscribe for a month, as I found myself having more fun past the starter levels (which is an anomaly with me).

Couldn't imagine playing on the non-Baron server though - PvP is what's driving me to give the game a fair crack.
