I have been working on a sci-fi/zombie apoc mmorpg project for some time, and while working unfunded is the surest way to get demotivated, getting funding is one of the most unbelievably unfreakingpossible task ever. As long as we dont get funding, our project will come second, right after our bill-paying job, but just before our girlfriends/kids ;). Our idea is to get community/fan funding once we have something playable... (est. Q1 2008) Discussion boards can be a great source of inspiration and ideas for developpers but it can also be a humongus uncomprehensible mess of whining and crying *points over to wow forum* Also keeping track of and drawing the line between useful fan imput and fanboy's tantrum would be too time consuming to undertake, but that could be fixed by putting some more mature and involved members of the community in charge of the forums.

Hoping to be able to post with screenies some time not too far...

sci-fi or fantasy are the only options?  What about modern day espionage?

  • legolass11legolass11 Member Posts: 12

CCP already got the license to make World of Darkness MMORPG which would be a Horror MMORPG. Unless they just nerf world of darkness lore but white wolf wouldnt permit it. Theres also some classic age mmorpgs.

Plus thres also furry mmos so its not just sci fi and fantasy

    As for donating?

I'd donate to a sandbox, skillbased game with more than combat-vombat gameplay... Crafting gameplay, social gameplay, healing gameplay, politics gameplay(Note: NO crappy cardgame!)... Ya know, more than whack-a-mole gameplay where when you're tired of whacking the mole, you just should log out because there isnt more to the game than that, and ofcourse auction the loot from the whacking of the mole...

    Generation 4?

    Where is generation 3?

Hello generation 3 where are you?

Come on out wherever you are.

Did that bad Brad McQuaid scare you into hiding?

I voted No, because imo mmo 's are a hell lot fun and I spend alot of time in it (I started 4 years ago). I wonder if people will donate money on someone's account just because you want to see a better MMOrpg with new features. Good luck finding them though.

Stupid Idea, unless an already successful MMO-Developer is creating it. Even then, you'd never get the ~50 Million $ you'd need to create such a mammoth project properly, not to forget that this game wouldn't ever be successful, but it'll be doomed to be a small niche game from the first second on.

People liked hardcore Games, heck I liked hardcore Games, but times have changed, the new generation of players expects comfort, safety and fun from their Games, they don't want to "work" for their success anymore.

I mean, ask yourself: Did you like your hardcore games? Do you still play them? If not, why don't you?

Our memory has a neat little feature, it tends to make your memories more extreme. Good memories become even better, bad memories become outright horrible. If you haven't played your favourite hardcore game for 4 years or something, log in again. I bet you won't it as fun anymore as "back in the days", because you're accustomed to some comfort now.

I would like to see more Sci-Fi games, Fantasy is getting a bit common...  Or perhaps an MMO so you're mixing all genres of games in one, Sci-Fi/Fantasy/etc...

Send all donated funds to Aventurine, please, in support of Darkfall, thanks.

If they manage to patch up Vanguard: SoH and put in all the features that was promised it will be great :)

There are loads of MMO's that's under development and will (probably) be great... such as Fallen Earth, Darkfall (if it's released...), Gods And Heroes and WAR.

Actually, OP presents an interesting idea for the funding model of a game.  All of the MMO's (at least that I've played and seem to have a following) are for-profit businesses.  Now many people believe market forces and competitition will generate the best products, because people vote with their money for the best product.  Well, it's no secret that much of the MMORPG.com forumites have "issues" with WoW, but clearly more people are voting with their money to keep that game on top (at least financially.)  Making an organization (game design group)  that is run by "the people" through donations might produce different (better?) results.  But it seems the same market forces would still be at work - i.e. if Player X doesn't like how "non-profit MMO" is shaping up, he'll stop donating to the non-profit and start giving money to Blizzard (or other profit MMO.)

In reality, seems the only way seriously new ideas are going to be implemented is when MMO designers/investors take risks and sacrifice seemingly gauranteed profits by using tried and proven MMO models.  Considering the huge amount of investment needed to fund a start-up MMO, it's probably a tough sell to big investors.  Of course, that's where OP's idea comes in...  Power to the People!!

    - I like playing with the casuals.

    - I like helping the casuals.

    - I like their kind word when they see what I achieve; even if it is pixels and pointless.

    - I like when a casual asks me for help; which I try to do even if not right now...if asked nicely and the casual is patient (usually is).

    - I like making a group full of casuals reach XYZ in the game and see the FEAR in the eyes of my fellow "elites hardcores players" as their fear the very fabric of the world may break, or that they be trained to death!

    - I like to see hardcores players back off from jerking with casuals because they are not willing to mess with me.

Any design that hurt a casual is a design that is worth going to the trashcan IMO.  I would be happy playing and trying to "rule" a game designed for casuals, no matter how silly, repetive, or easy the endgame is.  But a game designed for me solely where I would be alone earning UNLIMITED LEVELS (true hardcore of the RPG genre are fans of unlimited levels, other are only poseurs rellying on false gameplays unrelated to the original gameplay); I dunno, I really like the casuals a LOT.

The sidekick system is a blessing.  I would rather see a game focus on promoting and getting this to the next step (can sidekick be improved?  How?).

I am willing to lose my UNLIMITED levels to get the casuals in the game, I am unwilling to lose the casuals or to accept a foreign gameplay to replace my sweet unlimited levels.

PS: EQ was always full of casuals...raiders are casuals which forget they are casual as the devs focus a foreign gameplay (raiding) for them at the expense of the game.

Give me all your money and I'll grant you your wish. I'll develop TOONTOWN 2: REVENGE OF THE CIRCUS ZOMBIES, the most hardcore MMOG that will have ever graced the simpleton face of this unoriginal planet. I can see it now: "Best game ever chosen by 798 million global users!" banners flashing intermittently every 2 seconds all over this site!

I would only invest if the game featured Permadeath. Lack thereof is the actual fundamental reason all your games look the same. Since everyone is disinclined to appreciate this basic fact and no one agrees with me, I won't even vote in your little poll.
