yes ffxi is a good game but if wow was your first mmo then maybe you wont like it, ffxi is a time sink. nearly everything require a group and its not that easy to find one.

for server it really doesnt matter same for the job (class) since you can change it anytime you want.

ffxi sure is a good game IF u got lots of patience... waiting for groups can take hours... but once u hit lvl 75 (cap) ull get into the end game of ffxi, which is probably the best end game i have ever seen.

give it a try, there is a 30 day free trial. cant tell u which server is best... i've been playing on Shiva, but u shouldnt join that server, its lots of drama and idiots.

maybe u should join Garuda, its a new server.

FFXI is totally different from WoW, so much it may turn you off at first. But if you have patience the game pays off. Theres really no reason to choose one server over another, all timezones are intergrated. If you start on Garuda I'll help ya out, send a /tell to Raikul if you get on. As for starting job(class), it doesn't matter since you can change your job anytime you go to your mog house.

They just came out with a starter pack for 4 bucks that has the original game with the expansion data. I don't think that'll bust your wallet if you want to try it out.

And they've also announced the ability to buy the CD Keys for the expansions directly from Playonline.com - so anyone wanting to give the game a try now can start with the $4 trial and then upgrade, if they choose to, without having to go out and buy a box. Not a bad deal at all, and has been a long time coming.

I know some people will knock it for being a $4 trial but, trust me, if you consider the time it would take to download that entire client, plus playonline viewer, plus the expansions, that $4 is a bargain :).

As for the game itself, it's very deep, very detailed and downright massive. Seriously, though it might seem a bit "small" when you first get into it, believe me, this is deliberate. The game just gets more and more involved as you progress and it'll keep you occupied for quite some time. With 3 retail expansions already available - none of them insignificant in terms of added content - plus all the various free content additions they do in the live game, *and* the fact that there's yet another new expansion coming out, Wings of The Godess, FFXI is a behemoth (no pun intended). The new expansion will include the original 30 areas restored to as they were before the great war that takes place as the game's back-story. It will deal with time travel and going back in time to the pre-war period, with all its own quests, missions, storylines, etc.

As others have stated though, it's not WoW and, really, you couldn't get much more opposite of that game than FFXI. Quest NPCs are not indicated by a ! or a ?. The idea is to explore, talk to the NPCs and see if they have anything for you (if they don't at the moment, they might later). You do not get "discovery xp" (ridiculous concept, imo), quests themselves do not reward xp - you get xp through fighting mobs, you can lose xp and/or a level when you die (ie. it actually makes death a sting) and on and on. That said, if you can go into it with an open mind, don't look for similarities to, nor judge it by its differences to WoW, take your time and just dig in, you'll do fine.

In the end, I find it to be a very interesting, rewarding and overall enjoyable experience.

    Enjoy!

this game is very cool, i think i will play it a long time

  • LoopsLoops Member Posts: 100

yeah its cool indeed, the only negative thing about it is the RMT stuff... Its full of RMTs which ruins the game unfortunately... But its still cool, and SE is working hard against RMTs.
